Overview of the VPNSecure

VPNSecure website

VPNSecure is an Australia-based VPN service that was founded in 2010 by VPNSecure Pty LTD.

Over the last few years, the company has expanded rapidly and now provides access to over 80 servers in 50 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Oceania.

While the service does get top marks for its security features, its Australian Jurisdiction has proven to be a major drawback.

To ease the concerns, VPNSecure recently announced plans to relocate its operations to Hong Kong, a privacy-friendly jurisdiction.

Fingers crossed that will happen soon.

VPNSecure offers 24/7 live chat support, numerous payment options, and support for a wide range of platforms.

Pros

Cons

Security – Protocols & Encryption

If there is one area where VPNSecure stands out, it’s security.

The VPN offers military-grade AES 256-bit encryption with OpenVPN, the top-recommended protocol.

But that’s not the only cipher this VPN supports.

The service is also compatible with DES-CBC and AES 128-bit, allowing you to upgrade and downgrade depending on your speed and security needs.

Is VPNSecure Safe?

Transparency & Logging Policy

Many VPNs are quick to proclaim that they don’t keep logs.

However, not all state the specific types of data they claim not to log.

I was, therefore, pleased to see that VPNSecure has a detailed and rather impressive logging policy.

As you can see on the screenshot below, they do not log your online activities (DNS requests), connection data, or originating IP address.

VPNSecure's no logging policy

The strict no-logging policy slightly offsets the fact that they are located in Australia, which is a member of the 5-Eyes alliance.

I say ‘slightly’ because the Australian government is always on the verge of passing new and even more intrusive data laws.

On their part, the provider maintains that the data retention laws have not affected them, which is a bit reassuring.

Virus Test – No Malware Found

I downloaded my VPNSecure app from the official website.

Even so, I ran the installation file through VirusTotal.com to ensure it didn’t contain any viruses.

The results? No malware!

No malware were found using VirusTotal.com

IP, DNS, & WebRTC Leaks

Connection leaks are detrimental to your online privacy.

When your IP/DNS information is exposed, your physical location is likewise exposed.

I connected to a US server and tested for the various connection leaks using ipleak.org, ip8.com, and ipleak.net.

VPNSecure proved to be quite secure, and there wasn’t any evidence of leaks.

Here are the screenshots.

Kill Switch – You Won’t be Exposed

So far, VPNSecure has shown to be well encrypted and free of leaks.

But that’s not all you need to stay safe and secure online.

If you’ve ever used a VPN, you would know that sometimes the connection can drop expectantly.

When this happens, your internet traffic reverts to using your ISP’s servers instead of being redirected through a VPN server.

Again your data is no longer encrypted, and anyone can monitor your activities and browsing behavior.

That’s why I was thrilled to find out VPNSecure offers an automatic internet kill switch.

If your connection drops, the feature immediately disconnects your internet, ensuring that your IP isn’t leaked online.

Global Server Coverage

Servers and Server Locations

VPNSecure servers list

VPNSecure offers 81 servers in 50 countries across the world.

Despite having such a small number of servers, the provider has nicely distributed them across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Oceania, and the Asia Pacific, ensuring a truly global coverage.

Some of the server locations you can access include:

VPNSecure SmartDNS

If you only use VPNs to unblock geo-restricted media and do not care about encryption, then SmartDNS is the perfect tool for you.

A SmartDNS proxy allows to geo-spoof websites but does not encrypt your traffic.

But what you lose in security, you gain in speed.

SmartDNS connections are much faster and more stable compared to VPN connections.

VPNSecure includes Smarter DNS, their SmartDNS feature, as a part of their packages making the service an ideal choice for streaming.

Dedicated IPs

The provider also offers dedicated IP addresses across 48 countries.

While not as anonymous as Shared IPs, Dedicated IPs are useful if you need a static IP for banking and streaming.

Dedicated IPs also minimize CAPTCHA authentication, which are commonplace with shared IPs.

Speed and Performance

I connected to several VPNSecure servers and tested upload and download speeds.

While some were faster than others, overall, the speeds were underwhelming.

When conducting the speed test, I used a 75 Mbps internet connection, and the results were as indicated below.

Location Ping (ms) Download (Mbps) Upload (Mbps)
UK (Maidenhead) 147 44.56 14.90
US (Phoenix) 221 35.90 12.16
AU (Sydney) 334 20.97 7.76

To get the best speeds, you may need to ditch AES 256-bit and try either AES 128-bit or DES-CBC, which are much faster but relatively less secure.

Streaming – Does the Service Support Netflix?

Not Working With Netflix

As you probably know, not very many VPNs support Netflix.

Over the last few years, the streaming service has been actively cracking down VPN IPs to enforce content restrictions.

Is VPNSecure compatible with Netflix?

Well, I tried several servers, and none of them were working.

Eventually, I decided to contact customer support, who confirmed that the VPN does not work with Netflix.

Smart TVs and Other Streaming Devices

Torrenting & P2P

Is VPNSecure Good for Torrenting?

By default, the VPN’s secure, leak-free connections make it a good prospect for torrenting.

Sadly, their speeds aren’t where you would want them.

When set to AES 256-bit, VPNSecure posts some of the slowest speeds I’ve ever seen. So, even if it is safe and secure, there are better options like NordVPN and ExpressVPN that deliver on all fronts.

Locations & Obfuscation

The provider supports P2P / torrents in over 90% of their servers.

Currently, only three servers – UK1, UK2, and US10 – block the traffic.

I was also thrilled to find out the provider supports StealthVPN, which comes in quite handy in countries where VPN use is restricted.

Stealth VPN connects you to obfuscated servers which make your VPN traffic appear as normal HTTPS traffic.

This allows you to get behind restrictive firewalls and download torrents from anywhere in the world, including mainland China.

Device Compatibility

Apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, & iOS

VPNSecure comes with native apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Not many providers offer custom dedicated apps for Linux distros, and in this regard, VPNSecure stood out.

The apps feature several tweaks and advanced customizations for power users.

Still, the service is easy to set up and, which makes it ideal for both beginners and seasoned users alike.
You can download the apps directly from the VPNSecure website.

Android and iOS users can also choose to install the VPN directly from Google Play Store or iTunes, respectively.

Cross Platform

Customer Support – Live Chat + Knowledge Base

Fast Live Chat Support

VPNSecure offers great support, with a fast and reliable 24/7 live chat.

Generally, responses take less than 5 minutes, which is quite impressive, especially when you contrast to what you get with email ticketing.

Again, with VPNSecure you communicate with a real person and not some chat bot.

Their answers are also specific and reliable.

On subscribing to their premium package, I ran into connection issues and as a result, I was unable to use the VPN.

Luckily, Adam, a customer support agent, was on hand to help.

Knowledge Base Section

They also have a well-equipped Knowledge Base section on their website where you can find numerous FAQs, setup guides, and informative articles.

Pricing and Payment Methods

VPNSecure Is Not Cheap

VPNSecure price

VPNSecure offers 1-month, 6-month, and 1-year subscription plans.

Their cheapest option is available at $6.66 per month, paid annually.

Considering that the service has slow speeds, a low number of servers, and no Netflix access, it can feel hard to justify the price.

But in all fairness, they do allow an unlimited number of simultaneous connections allowing you to cover all your devices.

They also include ‘Smarter DNS’ in all the pricing plans, which might explain the rather high price tag.

Free Trial

VPNSecure offers a 30-day free trial allowing you to test the service before signing up and paying.

However, the free trial is limited to the OpenVPN protocol, few select servers, and a meager 2GB of data.

Payment Methods

The provider accepts credit cards, PayPal, Payza, Perfect Money, Paymentwall, and Bitcoin.

Offers many payment options

7-Day Money-Back Guarantee

In addition to their free trial, VPNSecure also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee for first-time purchases.

However, while commendable, it does fall short of the 30-day industry standard.

Social Proof - What Are Other Users Saying?

As usual, I decided to check the web for other user comments on VPNSecure.

Most of the feedback was rather positive with users complementing the VPN’s security, privacy features, unlimited bandwidth, and ease of use.

Conversely, I also came across some scathing comments about VPNSecure’s geo-unblocking capabilities.

But that was to be expected, especially given their track record with popular streaming sites like Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

Quite positive VPNSecure review

What Should You Consider Before Getting a Service Like VPNSecure?

While your ideal service will depend on your usage, there are some key aspects that you should prioritize when picking a VPN.

Here is my rating criteria:

Security and Privacy

VPNs exist to keep you safe and secure when online.

If a VPN can’t deliver on that end, you might as well not use any.

For maximum security, I recommend a VPN that supports OpenVPN with AES 256-bit, the gold-standard in VPN encryption.

However, if speed is your top priority, 128-bit AES will serve you better.

Connection Speeds

Slow speed can be frustrating – videos fail to load, and it can take forever to download a single file.

Unfortunately, this is what you get with most VPNs. Mostly, this is due to data encryption, but also server loads and optimizations play a major role.

That said, there are several providers that offer fast connections allowing you to stream media in HD or even 4K.

I’ve always advocated for VPNs that provide different configurations for different purposes, be it streaming or torrenting.

Server Distribution

How many servers does the provider offer and in which locations?

Generally, the higher the number of servers, the better. It’ll be easier to find less loaded, faster servers.

When it comes to bypassing internet restrictions, a wide server coverage is what you need. Basically, your ideal VPN should have servers in all your preferred locations.

Logging Policy & Jurisdiction

Almost all VPNs will advertise a ‘zero-logs’ policy, but the fact of the matter is that many do keep records.

So rather than dwell on whether your provider keeps logs or not, you should focus on the type of logs they keep.

Aim for a service that keeps neither activity nor activity logs and is located in a non-14 Eyes jurisdiction.

Apps & Supported Devices

For you to use a VPN, it must be compatible with your device.

It’s also essential to ensure the service comes with ready-to-use apps.

You would hate to spend hours going through set up tutorials.

Customer Service

Reliable customer support can help you resolve any issues quickly and easily.

While I do recommend Live Chat and Phone Support, Email Ticketing, FAQs, and Community Forums are just as important.

VPNSecure Alternatives

While VPNSecure comes with a plethora of exciting features, it, unfortunately, lacks in some key areas – speed, server coverage, and Netflix access.

Fortunately, there are several alternatives you can turn to.

NordVPN – Best Premium VPN

NordVPN is an excellent alternative to VPNSecure.

The service provides access to 5500+ servers in 60 countries around the world, making it a great option for bypassing geo-restrictions. NordVPN works perfectly with Netflix and thanks to their unique SmartPlay feature you can access to the streaming site with a single click.

That said, it’s on the security and privacy side of things where the VPN shines.

It is equipped with bank-level encryption, and advanced privacy features like Onion over VPN, Double VPN, and CyberSec, which blocks ads and malware.

At $2.99 per month (billed every 3 years), NordVPN remains one of the most affordable VPN services. All their pricing plans are backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee and with a single license you can cover as many as 6 devices at a go.

So, if you are looking for a fast and robust VPN for the whole family, NordVPN should be a great option.

ExpressVPN – Best for Streaming

ExpressVPN is known for its ultra-fast speeds.

But the British Virgin Island provider has more to offer than just fast connections.

Currently, ExpressVPN has over 3,000 spread across an incredible 94 countries.

The service reliably unblocks Netflix and using their SmartDNS (Mediastreamer), you can stream movies and shows on your Smart TV.
ExpressVPN safeguards all their server connections with AES 256-bit encryption.

It also offers an automatic kill switch and protection against IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks.

However, ExpressVPN service is not for the budget-conscious.

At $8.32 per month (billed annually), their cheapest plan isn’t cheap at all.

TunSafe – Best Free Alternative

TunSafe website

TunSafe is an exciting VPN that uses the new WireGuard protocol.

While the protocol is still in development, TunSafe has managed to leverage it to great effect.

The VPN is by far the fastest free VPN in the market, and it’s compatible with both Netflix and P2P.

However, while it may be good for streaming, it’s in the grey area when it comes to torrenting but only because WireGuard is still a work in progress.

Its encryption ciphers – ChaCha20 and Poly1305 –, on the other hand, are powerful and thoroughly tested.

Extra security features include double encryption (Multi-hop VPN) and an internet kill switch.

TunSafe is a good option if you are looking for a budget VPN. But keep in mind that with WireGuard, you are wading in uncharted waters.

CyberGhost – Best for Privacy

CyberGhost proudly promote their commitment to privacy.

And true to their world, the provider maintains a no logs policy and employs military-grade encryption to shield your personal data from prying eyes.

Additionally, CyberGhost blocks ads, malicious content, and online tracking.

The company also provides ‘NoSpy’ servers which are independently operated and optimized for maximum privacy.

In total, there are over 4800 servers in 61 countries, and the provider is always adding more.

CyberGhost works with Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Android TV, and routers. There are also browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox.

Its price is relatively affordable, and the cheapest option is available for $2.75 per month, billed every 3 years.

All CyberGhost subscriptions are covered by an industry-best 45-back money guarantee.

Final Word

When it comes to safety and security, VPNSecure leaves no stone unturned.

They maintain a strict zero-logs policy and offer best-in-class protocols and encryption. VPNSecure also provides leak free-connections and advanced levels of obfuscation.

However, the service is not fast or good at unblocking premium sites like Netflix, HBO, and BBC iPlayer.

So, if you are interested in a VPN for streaming, you may want to look at the alternatives above (ExpressVPN for example).

But if you are a privacy-focused user, then this is a no-brainer.
