NordVPN is my pick over Bitdefender VPN if you need a Linux app, a supported VPN router setup, or a Fire TV app. Bitdefender Premium VPN deserves a closer look if you only need Windows, Mac, Android, or iPhone support: its first annual bill is lower, and your security package may already include it.
If you have the standard Bitdefender VPN with a daily data allowance, an unlimited VPN can be a meaningful upgrade. If you already have Premium VPN, start by identifying a feature it lacks before paying for NordVPN as well.
The Quick Decision
| Your situation | My starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need a VPN briefly and stay within the included allowance | Keep the standard Bitdefender VPN | No extra subscription charge if it already comes with your security product |
| You need unlimited use on ordinary computers and phones | Compare Bitdefender Premium VPN first | Lower first payment in our USD offer check |
| Premium VPN is already included and works for you | Keep it | A second paid VPN needs a specific benefit to justify its cost |
| You use Linux, Fire TV, or a compatible VPN router | NordVPN Basic | Documented options for devices outside Bitdefender’s core app range |
| You want NordVPN while keeping Bitdefender antivirus | Keep the security suite and use NordVPN for the connection | You do not need to replace your antivirus to change VPNs |
First, Check Which Bitdefender VPN You Own
Open your Bitdefender account and look at the subscription name. Then open the VPN app and check its traffic allowance and server selection. An antivirus subscription and a Premium VPN subscription are different entitlements, even when sold in one package.
Bitdefender’s official VPN FAQ says the standard version normally provides 200 MB per day per device and chooses a server automatically. Premium unlocks unlimited traffic and location selection. The FAQ also identifies a separate 500 MB allowance for Small Office Security; do not confuse that exception with the usual consumer allowance.
Meanwhile, Bitdefender’s current product comparison lists Premium VPN inside Premium Security and Ultimate Security offers. Check your exact edition and renewal notice rather than assume every Bitdefender package has the same VPN.
Why the Allowance Changes the Decision
A 200 MB allowance is 0.2 GB in decimal units. A single 1 GB download would be five times that daily allowance. That arithmetic alone makes the standard tier a poor choice for continuous video, large transfers, or leaving the VPN connected throughout a busy day.
For occasional, light browsing, you may never reach it. Track the allowance in your app before upgrading. Once you need unlimited traffic, compare Premium VPN with NordVPN; comparing NordVPN only with the limited included tier understates what Bitdefender sells.
Prices: The First Payment and Renewal Cost
These US offers have different introductory terms: one year for Bitdefender Premium VPN and two years plus three extra months for NordVPN Basic. Compare both the first bill and the cost of covering the same period. NordVPN’s price does not include a coupon discount.
| Option | Pay initially | Monthly equivalent | Renewal information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included standard Bitdefender VPN | $0 extra if your existing package includes it | Part of the security subscription | Your security package still has its own renewal cost |
| Bitdefender Premium VPN | $34.99 for 12 months | About $2.92 | Renews at the then-current undiscounted annual price; $69.99 reference price displayed |
| NordVPN Basic | $94.23 for 27 months | $3.49 | $139.08/year listed after the introductory term |
Bitdefender has the smaller first bill. NordVPN’s $94.23 payment is $59.24 higher, but purchases 15 more introductory months. That difference is a cash-flow comparison, not a claim that NordVPN costs $59.24 more for the same period.
For a simple two-year planning example, one $34.99 Bitdefender year plus a $69.99 renewal would total $104.98. NordVPN’s $94.23 introductory payment already covers that two-year period and three more months. The Bitdefender calculation assumes the displayed undiscounted price remains its renewal price; its checkout says renewal uses the price current at the time and that customers receive advance notice.
The longer-term direction changes again when NordVPN’s introductory term ends. Its listed annual renewal is higher than Bitdefender’s current undiscounted annual reference. Set a reminder before either renewal and compare the services you still need. Our NordVPN pricing guide explains its other durations and plan upgrades.
The Correct Cost for an Existing Bitdefender Customer
If Premium VPN is already part of a security package you will keep, its incremental VPN cost is $0 for the current paid term. Adding NordVPN costs the full additional subscription payment. Do not count the whole antivirus bill as the price of Bitdefender’s VPN while ignoring the antivirus you still need.
If you are deciding at renewal, compare two complete baskets: the security package you would keep plus a separate VPN, versus a package that includes both. A discounted bundle can be good value, but only if you need the extra products and the next renewal remains acceptable.
Device Support: The Clearest Reason to Choose NordVPN
Both paid VPNs support the common desktop and mobile platforms. The more useful distinction is what happens beyond those devices.
| Requirement | Bitdefender Premium VPN | NordVPN |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone/iPad | Supported apps | Supported apps |
| Paid device allowance | Up to 10 devices on the standalone offer checked | Up to 10 simultaneous connections |
| Linux | Not listed among its native apps | Native Linux app |
| Amazon Fire TV | Official FAQ says unsupported | Fire TV app |
| Router installation | Official FAQ says unsupported; no manual configuration files | Supported router setups; check the model and firmware |
| Choose a country | Yes on Premium; automatic selection on standard | Yes |

For a household with a Linux laptop and Fire TV, NordVPN can meet a requirement that Bitdefender’s phone and computer apps do not cover. Our NordVPN Linux guide and Firestick guide cover those setups.
For a router, check compatibility before buying. NordVPN’s manual OpenVPN setup requires an OpenVPN client on the router; a box advertising a VPN server or VPN passthrough is not the same thing. See our NordVPN router guide for the practical distinctions. Router hardware and configuration can also affect performance.
Privacy and Useful Connection Controls
Avoid choosing solely on a list of encryption names. The relevant questions are whether the app can maintain the connection you need, how it behaves when that connection fails, and what evidence supports the provider’s privacy claims.
Bitdefender’s Windows app documentation describes a kill switch, automatic connection rules, and app or website exclusions through split tunneling. Its website-access guide also documents website exclusions on other platforms. Bitdefender therefore offers more than a basic on/off VPN button.
With either product, check the controls available in your specific app. Excluding a website or application from the VPN means its traffic uses your normal connection. That may solve a local-service problem, but it changes which traffic the VPN covers. Our NordVPN kill switch guide explains NordVPN’s platform differences.
Both Providers Publish No-Log Evidence
NordVPN describes six independent reviews of its no-log practices, with the sixth performed by Deloitte in 2025. Bitdefender reports a 2025 independent audit of the infrastructure used by its VPN.
Those are different statements with different scopes. Bitdefender’s support page summarizes its audit but does not provide the same detail as a full report. It would still be inaccurate to call its service unaudited based on an older comparison.
A no-log assessment does not measure streaming reliability, prove every app is free of defects, or make signed-in activity anonymous to a website. Treat privacy evidence as one part of the decision alongside compatibility and the provider’s current policies.
Streaming and Speed: What This Comparison Can Establish
Both vendors market their paid VPNs for streaming. We did not run a new same-device performance or streaming comparison for this article, so there is no measured speed winner here. Server counts, protocol names, and marketing awards cannot substitute for that test.
For your own decision, identify the service, device, and location you actually use. A provider supporting your television is a prerequisite; successful playback of a particular library is a separate question. Streaming platforms can reject VPN addresses, and access depends on their account and regional rules.
Bitdefender itself documents apps and streaming services failing with its VPN enabled. A temporary failure does not establish that a competing VPN will always work. Try the provider’s troubleshooting guidance before replacing a subscription that otherwise meets your needs.
If you evaluate a new paid VPN, compare it on the same device and network. Record download speed, upload speed, and latency with the VPN disconnected and connected to the locations you need. Also try your everyday calls and apps; a high download result alone says little about whether a work call stays stable.
Can You Keep Bitdefender Antivirus and Use NordVPN?
Yes, you can keep Bitdefender as your security product and choose NordVPN for your VPN connection. That does not mean you should enable two VPN tunnels at once or assume every combination of network filters will work without configuration.
Bitdefender’s connection troubleshooting guide warns about other VPN apps and documents possible conflicts, particularly on macOS. Disconnect the other VPN when switching, review automatic-connection settings, and follow the relevant support instructions if the apps interfere.
Do not remove working antivirus protection merely to add a VPN. Start by deciding which product handles the VPN connection and which handles device security. Our VPN versus antivirus guide explains their roles; our NordVPN Threat Protection guide covers its additional security features and platform limits.
For someone happy with Bitdefender antivirus, NordVPN Basic is the first NordVPN plan I would compare. Higher NordVPN tiers should earn their extra cost through features you will actually use, rather than duplicate tools you already pay for.
Which Should You Buy?
Choose NordVPN Basic when its Linux, Fire TV, or compatible router support solves a specific gap in your setup. It also makes sense when you prefer to manage your VPN independently of your antivirus subscription and accept its upfront and renewal costs.
Choose Bitdefender Premium VPN when you want unlimited use on its supported devices, prefer the smaller initial payment, or receive it in a security bundle you would keep anyway. Keep the included standard VPN when your usage genuinely fits its allowance and automatic server selection.
You can also check Bitdefender’s Premium VPN offer directly. If your existing security package is Norton instead, use our NordVPN vs Norton VPN comparison for the relevant plan and device distinctions.
Questions Before You Switch
Is Bitdefender VPN Free With Antivirus?
Some security packages include the limited standard version; other named packages include Premium VPN. Check the entitlement in Bitdefender Central and the allowance in your VPN app. “VPN included” alone does not establish unlimited traffic.
Is NordVPN Faster Than Bitdefender VPN?
This article does not establish a speed winner. We checked product capabilities and purchase terms, not a new controlled performance test. Performance on your device and the locations you need is more useful than an unsupported universal ranking.
Should I Buy NordVPN if I Already Have Bitdefender Premium Security?
First check whether your edition includes Premium VPN. If it does and meets your needs, a second subscription adds cost. Consider NordVPN for a specific missing device or setup, such as a Linux app or supported router configuration.
How We Compared Them
We checked both providers’ official product and support pages and inspected their public USD purchase flows. Prices are reference offers; budget examples are calculations using those prices. Recommendations reflect cost, included entitlements, and documented compatibility. We did not purchase subscriptions or produce new speed, streaming, malware, or leak-test results for this comparison.
