Choose NordVPN over Norton VPN when you need its Linux app or a documented setup for a compatible VPN router. Keep Norton’s VPN if it already comes with a security subscription you need and works on your devices. A second subscription should solve a specific problem.
For a new VPN purchase, Norton also deserves consideration: the US offer we checked was cheaper than NordVPN Basic for the same 27-month introductory period. Norton now offers TV apps, a kill switch, and additional privacy controls, so older comparisons can understate what it provides.
NordVPN or Norton: Which Fits Your Situation?
| What you need | My starting recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A VPN already included in Norton 360 | Try the included VPN first | No extra VPN purchase if your existing entitlement meets your needs |
| Linux support or a compatible router configuration | NordVPN Basic | NordVPN publishes an app or setup route for these requirements |
| A new standalone VPN at the lower 27-month price shown below | Norton VPN Standard | $80.73 compared with NordVPN Basic’s $94.23 |
| VPN access on a supported TV device | Check both providers and your exact subscription | Both now offer TV apps; plan and operating-system requirements matter |
| A separate VPN while keeping Norton antivirus | NordVPN Basic if its features justify the added bill | The VPN purchase does not require replacing your security suite |
Norton VPN and Norton 360 Are Different Purchases
“Norton VPN” can refer to the VPN in an existing Norton subscription or to the separately sold Norton VPN Standard, Plus, and Ultimate plans. Start with your account’s exact product name, device count, and renewal notice.
Norton 360 Deluxe is a broader security package that includes a VPN alongside other services. Replacing that package with NordVPN Basic would change more than your VPN connection. Decide what you would use for device security, password management, and any other features you currently depend on before canceling it.
The standalone Norton VPN plans also differ from one another. Standard concentrates on the VPN; Plus adds security and account-protection features; Ultimate adds a larger device allowance and family features in the US offer we checked. The products’ similar names make it especially important to compare the actual order details.
This article compares the VPN buying decision. For the broader question of which types of protection you need, our VPN versus antivirus guide explains the separate roles.
Current Prices and Renewal Costs
Compare the full upfront payment and annual renewal, not just the advertised monthly equivalent. These US offers cover the same 27-month introductory term; NordVPN’s price does not include a coupon discount.
| Plan | Device allowance shown | First payment | Listed annual renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Norton VPN Standard | 10 devices | $80.73 ($2.99/month equivalent) | $99.99 |
| Norton VPN Plus | 10 devices | $94.23 ($3.49/month equivalent) | $119.99 |
| Norton VPN Ultimate | 20 devices | $115.83 ($4.29/month equivalent) | $149.99 |
| NordVPN Basic | 10 simultaneous connections | $94.23 ($3.49/month equivalent) | $139.08 |
Sources: Norton’s VPN offers and NordVPN’s pricing and linked checkout. These offers can vary by region, promotion, and device tier. Confirm the full amount and included months in your own order before paying.
For the 27-month offers above, Norton Standard costs $13.50 less than NordVPN Basic. At their listed annual renewal prices, Norton Standard is $39.09 less per year. NordVPN needs to justify that difference through a feature, supported setup, or experience that matters to you.
Norton Plus and NordVPN Basic happened to have the same initial bill, but they are different packages. Do not assume equal prices mean equal antivirus, backup, or password-management entitlements. If those extras matter, compare the named features and platform limitations rather than just the monthly headline.
Our NordVPN plan comparison covers its higher tiers. If you already have security software you want to keep, Basic is the clearest starting point for pricing NordVPN’s VPN separately.
Already Have Norton 360? Calculate the Extra Bill
If you will retain Norton 360 regardless of your VPN choice, the included VPN costs $0 extra during your current paid term. Adding the NordVPN offer above means another $94.23 upfront. Its cost is not reduced by pretending the entire Norton security subscription is a VPN-only expense.
At renewal, compare the whole set of services you would actually retain. For example, note the renewal price of your exact Norton 360 edition, whether you still use its non-VPN features, and the cost of any replacements. Norton’s renewal price list separates editions and device counts; your own renewal notice is the relevant quote for an existing contract.
If Norton is already paid for another six months, there is no automatic saving from buying NordVPN today. You are adding a second service during those six months unless you obtain a refund or make some other confirmed change to the original subscription.
Apps and Devices: Where NordVPN Has a Clear Use Case
Both providers offer apps for Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone/iPad. For a household using only those platforms, compare the experience and features of the particular apps you will install.
NordVPN’s download page also lists a Linux app. Its router setup documentation provides a route for supported router models and firmware. Those are practical reasons to prefer NordVPN if they are part of your setup.
Norton’s published system requirements do not list a native Linux VPN app. For a Linux machine, I would choose the provider with a documented Linux product rather than buy a Windows or Mac subscription and hope it can be adapted.
Our NordVPN Linux guide and router guide cover the next steps. Check the router model before paying: support for running a VPN server is different from the VPN client required for NordVPN’s manual configuration.
Norton Now Has TV Apps
It is no longer accurate to dismiss Norton on the basis that it has no television apps. Its current product page lists Google TV, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. NordVPN also offers TV apps, including Apple TV and Fire TV.
Norton’s current US TV activation guidance requires a compatible operating system, a multi-device subscription, and an available device slot. Confirm the app-store requirements for your exact device and the entitlement in your account.
Older regional support pages can describe different restrictions. If the TV app rejects an existing subscription, establish whether the issue is the plan, device slot, or operating-system version before buying another VPN. A support article for a different country or an older edition is a poor basis for a purchase.
Privacy Features: Compare the Apps You Will Use
Norton’s current standalone offer includes a kill switch, Double VPN, and IP Rotation. NordVPN has its own connection controls and specialty features. Availability and behavior vary by platform, so a broad feature tick box should be followed by a check in the relevant app documentation.
One useful example is split tunneling: selecting which apps bypass the VPN. Norton’s connection troubleshooting guide distinguishes the standalone Norton VPN app from the VPN inside Norton 360. On Mac, it documents app exclusions for the standalone app and says that feature is unavailable inside Norton 360.
That distinction may matter more than the brand name. If you need a particular app to use your ordinary connection while others use the VPN, check that the product you own supports that arrangement. Also review NordVPN’s split-tunneling documentation for your platform before assuming a switch will solve it.
Split-tunneled traffic bypasses the VPN. Use exclusions deliberately and verify which applications they affect, especially if you originally bought the VPN to cover that traffic.
Both Publish Evidence About Their No-Log Policies
NordVPN describes six independent reviews of its no-log practices. Norton’s privacy page links VerSprite assessments, including a July 2025 Technical Privacy Impact Assessment and a November 2025 Mimic protocol assessment.
The existence of an audit is useful evidence, but the reports cover specific systems, periods, and questions. They are not interchangeable scores. An audit count alone does not prove that one VPN will be faster, work with every streaming service, or prevent all tracking.
Websites can still recognize an account you sign in to. Changing the IP address does not delete the data already stored in that account. Choose the privacy features for the task you want to accomplish, and read the scope of the evidence supporting them.
Streaming and Performance: Avoid Outdated Promises
This article does not claim a new measured winner for speed or streaming. Both providers promote streaming access, but a device app being available does not prove that a specific service will accept its connection today.
For a useful evaluation, name the streaming service and device, check the service’s regional rules, and test the connection you intend to use. An account’s country, subscription, and the service’s VPN policy can affect access independently of the VPN server you select.
For speed, compare the same network and device with and without the VPN. Test the server locations you need and include latency and upload performance as well as download speed. A VPN that looks good in one nearby download test can still be unsuitable for your regular calls or distant connections.
Our broader NordVPN review provides additional product background. Its historical tests should not be read as a fresh head-to-head result against the current Norton apps.
Can You Use NordVPN With Norton Antivirus?
You can choose NordVPN for the VPN connection while retaining Norton for device security. Start with one active VPN connection and check both apps’ automatic-connection settings so they do not compete to manage the same traffic.
If a site or application stops working, follow the providers’ troubleshooting instructions for that symptom. Avoid removing a security suite simply because you have decided to try a different VPN. Our NordVPN Threat Protection guide explains what its extra security features cover and where they are available.
If your real objective is removing your address or phone number from data-broker sites, that is another product decision. See our NordVPN and Incogni guide before assuming a VPN or dark-web alert feature includes data removal.
Refunds and Renewals to Check Before Switching
NordVPN advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for eligible first purchases. Norton lists a 60-day refund period for annual subscription payments, with different terms for monthly subscriptions. Read the policy for the seller and subscription you actually use: app-store purchases can follow different processes.
Norton’s cancellation and refund policy and NordVPN’s refund guidance are the relevant starting points. A refund promise is not a free subscription: you pay first and must request a refund within the applicable terms.
Norton’s US offer details say annual renewal charges can be taken up to 35 days before renewal. Do not wait until the final day of service if you intend to stop the next charge. For NordVPN, our cancellation guide explains the separate actions of stopping renewal and requesting a refund.
My Recommendation
Buy NordVPN Basic when its Linux app, compatible router setup, or preferred VPN features meet a requirement Norton does not meet for you. Keep your existing device-security product if you still need it, and evaluate the full additional VPN bill.
Keep Norton’s included VPN when it works for the devices and services you use. For a new standalone purchase at the US prices compared above, Norton Standard wins on price. Its current TV apps and privacy controls make it a stronger alternative than older comparisons suggest.
You can compare Norton’s current VPN plans directly. If your security subscription is Bitdefender, our Bitdefender VPN vs NordVPN guide explains the separate standard and Premium VPN allowances.
How We Checked This Comparison
We inspected Norton’s fully loaded US offer page, NordVPN’s USD Basic checkout, and the linked official support and privacy documentation. Cost differences are calculations from the displayed prices. We distinguish existing bundle entitlements from new subscriptions and current US guidance from older regional pages. No new app performance, streaming, malware, or leak tests were conducted for this article.
