If you’re looking for the best VPN for Craigslist, look no further!
After testing several VPNs, I found NordVPN to be the best overall match.
I’ve done my share of trading and advertising on Craigslist and understand the importance of using a reliable VPN to secure my information.
I know that being blocked from the platform can also be an issue.
Again – NordVPN certainly proved to be the winner for general use on Craigslist and ticks all the boxes for being safe, reliable, and fast.
However, you may find that an alternative VPN suits your needs better (like Surfshark or ExpressVPN)!
Let’s take a deeper look at which VPNs can enhance your Craigslist experience.
Top 3 VPNs for Craigslist (December, 2024)
If money’s tight, but you don’t want to skimp on quality, then look to Surfshark for value-added service. Using security features such as MultiHop, CleanWeb, and Whitelister, this VPN will help you post your ads in restricted locations. Its kill switch feature also helps prevent your IP from being leaked.
NordVPN uses powerful end-to-end encryption, two kill switches, and leak protection to ensure details don’t fall into the wrong hands. It also has advanced bypassing features to get you through pesky VPN blocks. As a bonus, the added CyberSec feature removes unwanted ads.
With more than 3,000 servers across the globe, ExpressVPN excels at ensuring its users can connect to various geo-blocked sites in multiple locations. This means you can access Craigslist in different countries/states to increase the exposure of your ad. ExpressVPN also has speed on its side, which is always a plus!
As an avid Craigslist user, I’m no stranger to phishing attempts (online identity theft is real).
I also know people who were blocked without reason.
It’s these peeves that sparked me to use a VPN with Craigslist.
So, during my journey to find the top VPNs for Craigslist, I kept certain relevant features in mind.
Higher-tier encryption and security features were a given (I wanted to make sure I was kept safe from sneaky phishing links and IP thieves).
I also looked for VPNs that can faultlessly unblock Craigslist in restricted areas by bypassing IP bans.
Speed and device compatibility were bonuses.
But I’ll discuss everything in detail below – so let’s get to it!

Detailed List of the 5 Best VPNs for Craigslist
Ready to dive in and grab your favorite VPN?
Great!
Feel free to read my research below so that you can find a VPN that will live up to your expectations.
I intend to make your Craigslist experience smooth (I like to make life easier).
Let’s do this!
Read on for detailed reviews on each of my 5 best VPNs for Craigslist:
1. NordVPN - Best Overall for Craigslist (Excellent Security and Unblocking Abilities)
NordVPN offers everything a serious Craigslist user could want – that’s why it earned the top spot on my list.
First, it can help you access the platform without jeopardizing your safety.
For example, NordVPN uses 256-bit AES encryption (like the other listed VPNs) to ensure your browsing remains free of cyber threats.
Second, many users want the option of accessing Craigslist from geo-restricted areas (like Hong Kong or the UAE).
Likewise, if you’re at college or work and an admin blocks Craigslist, NordVPN will help you unblock it.
Then there’s the big “ban.”
If Craigslist blocks or bans you over a misunderstanding (or you’ve been naughty), you can use one of NordVPN’s 5,200+ servers to bypass that ban.
You’ll still need to create a new Craigslist account, but that’s a small fish to fry.
Good to know: NordVPN provides access to thousands of servers, but for more variety, you may want to try CyberGhost, which offers 7,000+.
OR, even better, try PIA with its whopping 35,500+ servers!
Still, what swayed me the most about NordVPN is its solid security features.
Safe browsing and transactions are essential for Craigslist users (the platform is a hot spot for phishing attempts).
IP grabbers are another issue.
But this is where NordVPN excels.
Two kill switches make for double the security.
The first shuts off your internet connection if NordVPN unexpectedly disconnects, thus preventing your IP from being leaked.
The second protects you when you’re in app mode and closes the app when the connection is severed.
And while we’re on the topic of “doubling up,” another feature that makes NordVPN a cut above the rest is its double VPN.
No other VPN except for Surfshark offers the service.
This functionality directs traffic through two VPN servers instead of one.
The cherry on top is NordVPN’s split tunneling feature.
This gives the option to choose which programs are affected by the VPN (if you only want Craigslist to be affected, for example).
Surshark and ExpressVPN also offer this feature (as does PIA, but we’ll discuss that later).
I’ll add speed as an extra topping (NordVPN ensures that you can browse Craigslist or upload ads without lag).
The subscription plans aren’t too shabby, either:

Pros
- Unblocks Craigslist in restricted areas
- Bypasses Craigslist bans
- 5,200+ servers in 60 countries
- Two kill switches
- Double VPN with 256-bit AES encryption
- Split tunneling feature
- Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, and Firefox
Cons
- Speeds are not as fast as ExpressVPN (and sometimes Surfshark)
2. Surfshark - Affordable + Doubles up on Security With MultiHop
Surfshark sits at the lower end of the price scale, making it very appealing.
But just because it’s more affordable doesn’t mean it lacks premium features.
In fact, SurfShark outdoes itself in the security department.
The stealthy VPN features 256-bit AES encryption and uses “MultiHop” (which functions the same as NordVPN’s double VPN) to direct traffic through two VPNs servers for added security.
Like NordVPN, Surfshark makes unblocking Craigslist in restricted areas a breeze (although it has fewer servers than most providers).
This includes countries with heavy censorship and campuses that have blocked the site.
And if you’ve somehow bent the rules and gotten banned, you can use Surfshark to switch IPs so you can create a new account and get back to what you were doing (hopefully behaving).
Surfshark came in at a close second behind NordVPN for a reason.
If it wasn’t for the fact that it only offers a normal kill switch and not a second app kill switch like NordVPN, it might have placed first.
Surfshark also gets a thumbs up for its Whitelister feature, which lets you bypass your VPN (so you can use it for Craigslist without being forced to use it for other programs).
Whitelister is the equivalent of the split tunneling functionality that the other VPNs on my list offer.
Surfshark’s speed is also worth mentioning, although I found this to be pretty much neck-to-neck with NordVPN’s performance.
Both fall slightly behind ExpressVPN but are considerably faster than CyberGhost and PIA.
And, as mentioned, Surfshark offers cheap subscription fees with annual options taking the cake.

Looking to save a few?
Pros
- Unblocks Craigslist in restricted areas
- Bypasses Craigslist bans
- 3,200+ servers in 65 countries
- Double VPN with 256-bit AES encryption
- Split tunneling feature (Whitelister)
- Affordable VPN
- Compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, and Firefox
Cons
- Only one kill switch when compared to NordVPN (which has two)
- Slower than ExpressVPN and sometimes NordVPN
3. ExpressVPN - Unblocks Craigslist Worldwide
ExpressVPN is more than a VPN that “JUST” works.
It has some awesome features that make it a perfect fit for Craigslist.
The VPN uses traditional 256-bit AES encryption for ultimate security.
But the one drawback is that it fails to offer a double VPN or app kill switch like NordVPN, although it does have a potent regular kill switch (called “Network Lock”).
What DOES make ExpressVPN worthy of a second glance is its comprehensive and best-quality server networks.
It’s the best VPN for unblocking anything from anywhere – including Craigslist!
So, if you’re in the UAE or China and you want access to Craigslist, this is one of the fellas that will have your back.
It boasts more than 3,000 servers in 160 VPN locations across 94 countries.
I was also delighted to discover that the provider offers obfuscated servers, guaranteeing safety regardless of your government!
FYI – ExpressVPN is the only VPN on this list that provides automatic obfuscation on all its servers.
Another one of ExpressVPN’s prominent features is its speed.
It’s lightning-fast!
But you won’t really benefit from speed if you’re just browsing Craigslist.
However, this advantage will come into play if you frequently upload media (like photos) to the platform.
And then there’s the split tunneling feature.
Just like NordVPN and Surfshark, you can set your VPN to bypass other programs if you plan to use it for Craigslist only.
One solid drawback of ExpressVPN is the subscription fees.
The service is worth every penny, but it’s a pretty penny you’ll pay:
If you have no budget constraints, then I’m sure ExpressVPN will love to have you.
It’s also not too stingy and does make room for a discount.
Pros
- Unblocks Craigslist in restricted areas
- Bypasses Craigslist bans
- More than 3,000 servers in 160 VPN locations across 94 countries
- 256-bit AES encryption with one kill switch
- Split tunneling feature
- Super-fast speeds (faster than NordVPN and Surfshark)
- Compatible on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and Firefox
Cons
- Not a budget-friendly VPN
- No app kill switch
- Lacks a double VPN
4. CyberGhost - Beginner-Friendly With Military Level Encryption
Finding a comfortable fourth-place spot on my list is CyberGhost.
I like CyberGhost because it’s very easy to use, making it a great option for those still intimidated by VPN functionality.
Like NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN, it has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android (all straightforward and easy to navigate).
Here’s an example of the user-friendly Android user interface:
With CyberGhost, you also get good security.
Prominent safety features include an always-on kill switch, DNS leak protection, RAM-only servers, and a no-logs policy.
One thing that this provider certainly does do right is its private dedicated IPs.
While these do come at an additional price ($5 per month on top of the VPN subscription fee), they’re super handy when you want to lower your chances of getting blocked by Craigslist.
Dedicated IPs are less likely to be blacklisted.
Combine the dedicated IPs with CyberGhost’s anti-censorship proxy, and you can access Craigslist in most government-restricted countries – even if you’ve been blocked (blocked users still need to create a new account).
Plus, CyberGhost takes anti-censorship seriously – perhaps you’re in the same boat?
The VPN continues to provide value and offers a dedicated mode for streaming.
This mode is titled “For Streaming” and can also be used for Craigslist.
The advantage of this feature is that it runs traffic through an optimized server, using an IP address that’s less likely to be blocked by the site you’re trying to access.
As a side note, when I connected to an optimized server, I managed to unblock Craigslist within seconds (bonus)!
Like other VPNs on my list, this Craigslist VPN offers industry benchmark protocols, military-grade encryption, and a few cool optional features that make it worthy of consideration.
In terms of pricing, CyberGhost is quite reasonable with its long-term plans, see for yourself:

Pros
- Unblocks Craigslist in restricted areas
- Bypasses Craigslist bans
- 7,000+ servers all over the world
- Military-grade encryption with always-on kill switch
- Compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, and Firefox
Cons
- Reasonably priced but not the most affordable option
- I found it’s not very reliable when used in China or the UAE
5. Private Internet Access (PIA) - Extensive Server Network for Bypassing IP Bans
Last on my list of the top VPNs for Craigslist is Private Internet Access (or PIA).
With over 30,900 servers in 78 countries, it’s difficult NOT to give this VPN a worthy mention.
A quick look at its user interface will confirm that there’s no shortage of servers to choose from.
The many servers make PIA one of the best for bypassing Craigslist IP bans.
I mean, with so many IPs to choose from, getting a new one that works is painless.
Of course, this also makes it easy to access Craigslist in countries or places (work/school) where it’s restricted.
And then, with PIA’s extensive network, it makes sense that speeds are impressive as well (I’ve tested to confirm this).
Speeds are not nearly as fast as ExpressVPN (or NordVPN or Surfshark) though, so keep that in mind.
Like the other VPNs on this list, PIA also offers security using traditional 256-bit AES encryption.
So, you can use Craigslist without worrying about your private info falling onto prying eyes.
A kill switch is another security enforcer that ensures your internet is cut if your VPN is interrupted.
But why has PIA fallen to the bottom of the list?
To start, the split tunneling feature isn’t the most reliable.
That’s OK; I can live with this.
What does leave me wary is that it lacks an app kill switch or a double VPN (like NordVPN or SurfShark’s Multihop).
That said, it does offer an extensive range of apps to cover most platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS included – PLUS browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.
PIA’s fees are easy to swallow, too:

Pros
- Unblocks Craigslist in restricted areas
- Bypasses Craigslist bans
- Over 30,900 servers in 78 countries
- 256-bit AES encryption
- Compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS – with browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.
Cons
- Unreliable split-funneling feature
- No app kill-switch or double VPN
Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right VPN for Craigslist?
If you’re not sold on my list of best VPNs for Craigslist, that’s OK; I take no offense!
However, I ask (beg) you to do diligent research before drawing your conclusion.
You can use this buyer’s guide as a reference while you shop for the VPN that stands out to you.
Just make sure to pick a VPN that:
Unblocks Craigslist
Many VPN providers boast that they can unblock ALL services when they actually can’t.
Or maybe they can unblock a service, but with some trial and error on your side.
You want a VPN that unblocks Craigslist, whether in a restricted country or on a work/campus network.
I suggest making use of the money-back guarantees most providers offer.
Purchase a subscription, test it with Craigslist, and then request a refund if it doesn’t live up to your expectations.
Be wary of VPN providers that don’t offer this type of refund policy!
Bypasses Craigslist IP Bans
Money-back guarantees are also handy when checking if a VPN bypasses IP bans.
Now, you don’t need to purposefully ban your personal account from Craigslist to check if this feature works – but you can create your own server, ban yourself, and then see if a VPN can bypass it with an alternative account.
If it doesn’t – ask for your money back.
Provides Top-Notch Security
Craigslist is a hub for scammers and cybercriminals.
You often need to share your contact details, which opens you to phishing messages (and IP grabbers).
For this reason, you need a VPN with foolproof security features.
Search for VPNs that offer 256-bit AES encryption and at least one kill switch (an added app kill switch is a precautionary bonus)!
Double VPNs can also double your security – and who will say “no” to that?
As for split tunneling, it’s not a security feature per se, but it’s super useful when you don’t want your VPN to affect your entire device.
Provides a Pleasant Browsing Experience
Super-fast speeds aren’t too important when browsing Craigslist, but still, you don’t want lag to create a frustrating Craigslist experience.
You may also need to upload or download media files, and you want these processes to run smoothly.
A VPN that promotes itself as providing fast to super-fast speeds should be just dandy – but you can play the “money-back” guarantee card here, too.
Sometimes, a big server network can be reassuring, and any VPN boasting 3,000+ servers should be good enough to give you fast speeds.
Accommodates Many Devices
Craigslist can be accessed from many devices, including smartphones.
Just ensure the VPN you choose accommodates your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, etc.) and browsers.
Most VPNs offer app extensions for all devices, but browser extensions (such as Opera, Chrome, and Firefox) may be limited.
Provides Value for Money
I’m assuming you want the best bang for your buck – so, make sure you don’t get ripped off!
Compare providers and the features they offer to ensure you’re getting the best possible deal.
How to Use a VPN to Unblock Craigslist?
If you haven’t been following Craigslist’s rules or if you’re trying to access the platform using a public IP (or from a restricted location), then you can use a VPN to bypass a ban.
Follow these easy steps to Unblock Craigslist:
- Choose one of my suggested VPNs and purchase a subscription. I’ll be using NordVPN for this guide.
- Download and install the VPN on your device.
- Open the VPN app and sign in to your account.
- Connect to a server in a location that allows access to Craigslist.
- Open Craigslist on your browser and create a new account (with a new email).
- You should now be able to browse Craigslist safely – and you can post ads to your heart’s content (barring that you stick to the rules – no scamming and spamming, etc.).
What Is the Best FREE VPN for Craigslist?
Many free VPNs MIGHT help you bypass a Craigslist ban, but you won’t get the same level of security as you would with a paid-for service.
Free VPNs are also temperamental and can work one minute and not the next.
However, if you’re set on going the freebie route, then you can find a list of free options here.
These are great choices that will work with Craigslist (see CyberGhost’s free option).
Just don’t expect them to work flawlessly at unblocking Craigslist in restricted areas or bypass IP bans every time.
If you have budget restraints, rather take advantage of one of the deals above – or grab an instant discount on NordVPN.
FAQ
Can Craigslist Posts Be Traced?
Yes.
If you use your private IP address to post an ad, Craigslist can review its records to trace the IP back to your home or mobile internet connection.
However, this rarely happens unless you’re in breach of the platform’s rules and have been posting ads that do not meet their terms and conditions.
If you use a public Wi-Fi connection or an IP address connected to a VPN, then it will be hard (mostly impossible) to track your personal details (unless you’ve left contact details in your ad, of course).
Why Did My IP Address Get Blocked From Craigslist?
If your IP address has been blocked or banned from Craigslist, you have more than likely: violated the platform’s terms and conditions, displayed inappropriate behavior towards other users, traded illegal goods, or used the platform to conduct scams or phishing.
It sucks.
But it can happen to the best of us, and the platform blocks several IP addresses daily.
However, it mostly happens to those who tried to bend the rules.
For example, Craigslist can block you if you post too many times or target ads at restricted locations (this goes against its terms).
It can also block you if you take advantage of the platform, like using e software to scrape details such as email addresses.
If Craigslist catches you making bulk requests from one location, it makes sense that they’ll put up protective barriers.
It rarely happens that a person is blocked unfairly or by accident, although it’s not impossible.
A VPN can be used to create a new Craigslist account so that you can argue your case or continue browsing/posting using new details.
Is Craigslist Safe?
Craigslist has established various protocols to make your experience with the platform safe.
It has standard security protocols, a strict privacy policy, and limits file types.
However, it’s not without its flaws, and there have been users who reported cases of identity theft, viruses, and other cyberattacks.
The best security defense when using websites such as Craigslist is a VPN.
A VPN works as a shield to protect you from cybercriminals and can provide a leak-proof experience.
And That’s a Wrap
You’ve been patient with me – thank you!
But now that I’ve had my say, it’s time for you to make your decision and purchase your VPN for Craigslist.
I’m still going to go with NordVPN as my top pick – it’s that good!
Remember, you can get a juicy discount if you act fast.
