Hyperoptic is known for its incredible internet speeds, but as an ISP, it’s also no stranger to bandwidth throttling and blocking websites and online platforms.

Luckily, the best VPN for Hyperoptic will help you stay on top.

Finding reliable VPNs for Hyperoptic wasn’t easy, though.

As the ISP already offers impressive speeds, I wanted VPNs with fast enough servers that you wouldn’t notice much difference when comparing.

Fortunately, after hours of testing, I came up with five fast, trustworthy choices!

At the top of my list is Surfshark.

Not only will you enjoy competitive speeds, but also robust security to hide your online activities from Hyperoptic.

My other top two choices are NordVPN and ExpressVPN.

Stick around to find out why each VPN made my list – and which is the best for you!

Trustworthy VPNs for the UK ISP will also include robust security and privacy features to hide that you’re using a VPN from Hyperoptic and to ensure if your data is ever requested that there’s nothing to give.

Ideally, they’ll also have the ability to unblock websites and online platforms, such as streaming services.

Best Overall

With a large network of over 3,200 RAM-only servers, it’s no wonder Surfshark can maintain Hyperoptic’s lightning-fast speeds! This and the provider’s robust security (including a lightweight obfuscation feature) and ability to unblock websites and online platforms (like Netflix and Hulu) are what cements Surfshark as my top choice as a VPN for Hyperoptic.

Detailed List of the 5 Best VPNs for Hyperoptic Broadband

Finding the most trustworthy VPNs for Hyperoptic wasn’t easy – but I found five promising providers.

Take a look:

1. Surfshark – Best VPN for Hyperoptic Broadband Overall

Hyperoptic (usually) delivers internet speeds worthy of its name – and Surfshark’s server speeds make sure you don’t lose that advantage.

While connecting through a VPN almost always results in some speed reduction, Surfshark can keep this to the barest minimum.

This means no buffering during your nightly binge on BBC iPlayer, and no annoying connection crashes for gamers!

Plus, if you’re super keen on hiding your online activities from Hyperoptic, you can even hide that you’re using a VPN by utilizing Surfshark’s Camouflage Mode.

This is a lightweight obfuscation feature that’s automatically enabled when you use the OpenVPN protocol.

Camouflage Mode is beneficial if you’re trying to stay under Hyperoptic’s radar while torrenting – just keep in mind Surfshark limits its P2P support to downloads only.

But if obfuscation isn’t a priority, you can take advantage of WireGuard instead, another open-source VPN protocol designed to be faster than OpenVPN (but just as secure).

This will help you maintain those impressive speeds even more!

Better yet, because of Surfshark’s 3,200+ RAM-only VPN servers in 65 countries worldwide, you’ll have no trouble accessing Netflix US, Hulu, and other geo-blocked streaming platforms from the UK.

No more relying solely on iPlayer to get your fix!

Best of all, Surfshark lets you connect unlimited devices simultaneously through its user-friendly apps – so you can hide your online browsing on your smartphone while streaming Netflix US on your PC (or console) at the same time!

And you get all of this at an incredibly affordable price (on long-term plans):

Together with a 30-day money-back guarantee and our exclusive discount, Surfshark is undeniably the best VPN for Hyperoptic!

2. NordVPN – Budget-Friendly Privacy

NordVPN used to fall behind with its VPN speeds – but that’s no longer the case.

The Panama-based industry leader developed its version of the WireGuard protocol called NordLynx.

The proprietary protocol offers much better speeds than OpenVPN while still matching the current industry standard for security and privacy.

nordvpn nordlynx vpn protocol

This means NordVPN won’t struggle to keep up with Hyperoptic’s fast speeds – nor will your online activities be visible for the UK ISP to goggle at.

Instead, you’ll enjoy the utmost privacy.

And thanks to the provider’s verified no-logs policy, it won’t have anything to give even if Hyperoptic demands your data.

NordVPN also offers 5,300+ RAM-only servers that can unblock a myriad of websites – including streaming platforms!

So, if streaming US-based content is a priority for your VPN, you’re in luck!

With NordVPN, you can enjoy all the popular streaming giants like Netflix US and Hulu from the comfort of your UK home.

However, if hiding that you’re using a VPN from Hyperoptic is essential, you’ll have to sacrifice some speed, as NordVPN’s obfuscation feature is only available with OpenVPN TCP.

Still, NordVPN offers competitive speeds for most users, even with obfuscation enabled.

For example, you can still enjoy torrenting with no restrictions!

enabled nordvpn obfuscated server setting

And if obfuscation is only necessary with one device, you can still use a faster protocol to stream Hulu on another at the same time!

In fact, NordVPN offers six simultaneous connections, so you won’t struggle to connect all your devices if it comes down to it.

Plus, out of my top three, NordVPN offers the most affordable monthly subscription:

3. ExpressVPN – Fast Server Speeds

With 3,000+ RAM-only TrustedServer VPN servers, PrivateDNS, and an independently audited no-logs policy, ExpressVPN guarantees your online activities are seen by only one pair of eyes: yours!

Advance TrustedServer Technology with Express VPN

Combined with the provider’s lightning-fast speeds, it’s no surprise why the VPN makes my top three!

So, if speed is your primary concern, ExpressVPN offers the ultimate solution – including a minimal speed reduction and stable ping without jeopardizing your privacy and security!

It also includes the ability to unblock many websites and platforms – such as Netflix US, Hulu, and Amazon Prime US – and P2P support!

Moreover, if you want to guarantee even faster streaming speeds, you can use ExpressVPN’s proprietary VPN protocol, Lightway.

Thanks to Lightway, even if you use all five of the provider’s simultaneous connections, you’ll still enjoy blazing fast speeds on every device!

The only downside to ExpressVPN is its premium pricing:

ExpressVPN also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you’re covered if you aren’t satisfied with the provider.

4. Private Internet Access – Largest Server Network

With 30,892+ VPN servers in 78 countries worldwide, Private Internet Access (PIA) offers the largest server network on the market!

This helps Hyperoptic customers continue to enjoy blazing fast speeds while connected, especially when using the WireGuard protocol instead of OpenVPN.

private internet access wireguard connection

Unfortunately, PIA hasn’t developed a proprietary version, so there is some reduction in privacy.

However, if you prefer an optimal blend of speed, security, and privacy, OpenVPN UDP is somewhat faster than OpenVPN TCP.

Regardless of what protocol you settle for, all of them were at least fast enough for PIA to make my list as one of the fastest VPNs for Hyperoptic.

This is especially useful when using PIA to torrent, as it helps you fly under Hyperoptic’s radar while still enjoying your favorite (totally not copyrighted) content.

And while PIA doesn’t use RAM-only servers, I have no reason to believe their strict no-logs policy is dishonest – so you’re sure to enjoy private online browsing while connected.

As for unblocking general websites, PIA is great at it!

On the other hand, the provider’s ability to unblock streaming platforms varies.

At the time of writing, Netflix US is unblocked, but Hulu won’t load properly.

streaming victorious with private internet access

On the bright side, with PIA’s generous simultaneous connections limit, you can hide your activities from Hyperoptic while still enjoying fast speeds on up to ten devices!

This means watching Victorious on Netflix US while chatting on Discord via your smartphone is easy.

PIA also offers affordable subscription fees, especially on long-term plans:

And with our MASSIVE discount deal (including two free months), you’ll save even more!

But if you’re not satisfied, PIA also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

5. CyberGhost – 45-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Although they have 7,100+ VPN servers in 91 countries worldwide and are one of the most beginner-friendly VPNs for Hyperoptic, CyberGhost comes in fifth place for me.

The good news is, despite being owned by the same parent company as PIA, CyberGhost is more reliable when unblocking Hulu, Netflix, and other streaming services.

streaming solar opposites with cyberghost vpn

They also have the advantage of using RAM-only servers.

This means you’re at least able to enjoy streaming US content from the UK (and torrent) without Hyperoptic spying on you!

But as far as speed goes…

CyberGhost consistently reduces internet speed by up to 50%.

This drastically undermines one of Hyperoptic’s most significant selling points – its incredible speeds.

Unfortunately, there’s no guaranteed way to minimize this speed reduction.

The best you can do is use the WireGuard protocol (with the same privacy-caveat as PIA) and, when possible, use CyberGhost’s specialized servers.

cyberghost specialized servers

All of that said, when compared to other VPNs (not on this list), CyberGhost still performs at a higher capacity.

This means, if you’re new to VPNs, the provider still offers a safe, secure VPN service with a gentle learning curve.

Plus, with seven simultaneous connections, you can still keep Hyperoptic in the dark on all your devices.

But there’s one more selling point to CyberGhost that earned its spot on my list – a 45-day money-back guarantee on six months (or longer) plans.

So, if you test CyberGhost and are unsatisfied (or you want to graduate to a more advanced VPN), you have 45 days to get your money back.

This is 15 more days than any other VPN on my list offers!

And if you opt for a longer subscription, you’ll save a good chunk of money anyway:

How to Choose a VPN for Hyperoptic? Don’t Skip Out on These Features!

Here’s a quick cheat-list for choosing a VPN for Hyperoptic:

  • Fast Speeds – Hyperoptic is known for its impressive internet speeds, thanks to using fiber optic cables instead of the standard copper ADSL. So, to minimize the guaranteed speed reduction a VPN causes, you need a VPN with lightning-fast speeds. A fast VPN gives you all the benefits – like privacy, security, and a stable connection – without jeopardizing the speeds you already enjoy with your ISP.
  • Unblocks Websites – many ISPs in the UK are slamming the door on various websites and online platforms. Hyperoptic is no exception. To circumvent these blocks, a VPN with the ability to bypass internet censorship is essential. Not only does this include general websites and platforms, but also (preferably) streaming services like Netflix US and Hulu. With a reliable VPN, you can access unrestricted internet regardless of your ISP and location.
  • Large Server Network – the number of servers a VPN has influences both speed and the VPN’s ability to unblock websites. Thus, the more servers a VPN has, the more likely you will enjoy a minimal speed reduction and unrestricted internet. If the VPN has servers in and/or near your country, even better.
  • Robust Security and Privacy – the most trustworthy VPNs for Hyperoptic will include robust security and privacy features, such as AES 256-bit encryption, verified no-logs policies, RAM-only servers, secure VPN protocols like OpenVPN and WireGuard (or proprietary versions), and obfuscation options. These features ensure Hyperoptic can’t spy on your online activities or access your data/logs by demanding them from your VPN. They also protect you from other threats, such as cyber-attacks and malware.
  • Simultaneous Connections – hiding your online activities from Hyperoptic on all of your devices is vital. For this reason, you need a VPN that offers multiple simultaneous connections – the more, the better.
  • P2P Support – if you use the P2P network for downloading/uploading content, it’s crucial to find a VPN that supports torrenting – because not all of them do! On top of that, you need a VPN that will hide your torrenting activities from Hyperoptic, so you’re not flagged for seemingly suspicious activity (remember, torrenting has a legit use besides pirating content).
  • Affordable Pricing – not all VPNs are appropriately priced. This is why you need to be extremely careful not to purchase a VPN subscription if its features don’t reflect its cost. That said, premium VPNs do exist – such as ExpressVPN – where you’ll pay a premium price for premium features. Overall, there are reliable VPNs out there for all budgets. Shop around and compare prices (and features) before making an educated decision.

How to Use a VPN for Hyperoptic? Don’t Worry – It’s Easy!

hyperoptic home broadband

The only solutions that seem to work for using a VPN for Hyperoptic are paying the ISP an extra £5 a month for a Static IP Address or going through a complex process to set up your own Linux-based VPS (Virtual Private Server) to run your VPN through.

This is because Hyperoptic makes it more difficult than usual to use a VPN.

It uses Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) – meaning your public IP address is shared with other Hyperoptic customers.

The idea is to make it easier to transition from the current IPv4 to the newer IPv6 while simultaneously dealing with the IPv4 address shortage.

But – as the ISP admits in this Reddit post – it also negatively impacts online gaming, torrenting, and VPN apps.

So, for most users, I recommend the Static IP Address option.

Just be aware that this often leads to geo-location blocks without a VPN, as many of Hyperoptic’s available static IP addresses appear to originate from Romania.

Using Your VPN With Hyperoptic in 6 Easy Steps!

Once you secure your Hyperoptic Static IP address, follow these steps to use the ISP with a VPN:

  1. Choose a VPN provider and purchase a subscription plan.
  1. Download and install the VPN app.
  2. Launch the VPN app and sign in to your account.
  1. Click or tap the Connect button for the fastest VPN server near you. If you need to use a specialized server (if available) or bypass geo-location blocks, manually select a server location from the app’s server list.
  2. Open your browser and check for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks just in case.
  3. Enjoy accessing Netflix US and/or Hulu with a stable connection and the same fast streaming speeds!

Can I Use a VPN on My Router Instead?

This depends on your router, as not all models are VPN-compatible.

However, the best VPNs (including those I recommend for Hyperoptic) offer router set-up guides for compatible routers.

Surfshark also provides recommended routers, while ExpressVPN offers routers that come with its VPN settings pre-configured.

Just be aware these are typically (much) more expensive!

Unfortunately, the router provided by your ISP is almost guaranteed not to be an option.

Can I Use a Free VPN for Hyperoptic Broadband?

I don’t recommend using a free VPN for Hyperoptic Broadband, or even in general.

Free VPNs are unlikely to hide your activities from Hyperoptic.

They’re also unlikely to maintain the ISP’s famously fast speeds or unblock websites and online platforms.

Even worse, many free VPNs sell your data to advertisers.

Is a VPN for Hyperoptic Broadband Legal?

Yes, using a VPN for Hyperoptic Broadband is legal, as the UK doesn’t restrict VPN usage, and the ISP allows the use of a VPN.

However, any illegal activities without a VPN remain illegal with a VPN.

Where Is Hyperoptic Broadband Available?

Hyperoptic Broadband is available exclusively in the UK.

However, they don’t currently offer nationwide coverage and are limited to major cities.

You can always double-check the ISP’s Coverage Map to see if its service is available in your area.

hyperoptic home boradband page

While by no means a new ISP, Hyperoptic is still relatively unknown due to its limited availability in the UK.

But it’s certainly making a name for itself by offering lightning-fast fiber-optic speeds!

Unfortunately, that made it somewhat challenging to find reliable VPNs to use with it.

Luckily, Surfshark is a sure winner, as it offers competitively fast speeds, robust security and privacy, and unblocks all of the popular websites and streaming platforms.
