The best way to use IPVanish with uTorrent is by configuring the VPN app directly on your device to download torrents. You can also install IPVanish on a router whose connection your uTorrent PC uses, but that’s more complex than using the PC app.
Furthermore, you can configure the IPVanish SOCKS5 proxy for uTorrent downloads. While this setup option lacks encryption, you’ll get faster download speeds.
Here’s how best to use IPVanish with uTorrent on Linux, Windows PC, or Mac.
How to Configure the IPVanish App for uTorrent?
IPVanish has native Windows, Mac, and Linux apps, making it easier to install and set up on these devices that can download uTorrent.
I’ll complete an example setup with IPVanish on my Windows PC below:
- Get an IPVanish account. I recommend these discounts for bigger savings on your first purchase.
- Download the IPVanish Windows PC app. You can get it via the VPN website.
- Launch the IPVanish app and log in with your account credentials.
- Click Settings > Connection.
- Enable the kill switch to prevent your ISP from getting a whiff of your P2P activities on uTorrent if the VPN server connection drops.
- Click “Protocol,” then enable “WireGuard.” This is the fastest protocol to get the closest to your ISP base speeds for quicker uTorrent downloads.
- Optional: Select “OpenVPN” if your network admin or ISP blocks VPN access on their network.
- Click “Connect” on any page to get the VPN-determined best server. This ensures faster speeds without compromising your security.
- Alternatively, click the locations icon, search for a preferred server, and click it to connect.
- Once connected, download or launch your uTorrent application. It’s crucial only to open uTorrent after IPVanish is connected.
- Add a torrent file to your uTorrent dashboard. You can do so via magnet links on torrent websites like The Pirate Bay or by manually adding torrent links to the interface.
- Start downloading torrents securely from anywhere.
How to Use IPVanish SOCKS5 Proxy With uTorrent?
You can bypass the VPN’s encryption load to download torrents over uTorrent when you choose its SOCKS5 proxy setup.
Note that this changes your IP address, but your P2P activities may still be visible to your ISP or anyone else looking in on your traffic.
If that’s not an issue for you, here’s how to enable it:
- Grab your IPVanish account. Use these discounts, and the SOCKS5 comes as a free add-on.
- Login to your IPVanish online account.
- Click “SOCKS5 Proxy.”
- Copy your SOCKS5 Proxy username, password, and port details on the left-hand side of the screen. This is different from your usual IPVanish username and password.
- Launch your uTorrent application.
- Click Options > Preferences. Alternatively, Windows users can enter Ctrl + P.
- Click “Connection.”
- Click the “Type” dropdown menu under “Proxy server” and select “Socks5.”
- Copy a proxy address (corresponding to a location) on the IPVanish SOCKS5 proxy server list. I’ll copy the Canada address for this demonstration.
- Enter it in uTorrent’s “Proxy” box.
- Enter the port number you copied in the “Port” box. That’s “1080” for me.
- Check “Authentication” if unchecked. Then, enter the username and password you copied in step 4 above into the relevant fields.
- Under “Proxy Privacy,” check all options except the first.
- Click “Apply,” then “OK.”
- Return to the uTorrent interface to continue torrent downloads or start new ones.
Can You Bind the IPVanish Interface to uTorrent?
You can’t bind the IPVanish VPN connection interface to uTorrent.
While there are guides offering a setup to bind your IPVanish IP address to uTorrent, I’ve tested such configurations, and they don’t work. After all, uTorrent will keep downloading if you change your IP address mid-connection or even disconnect from the IPVanish interface.
Hence, enabling the IPVanish kill switch is the safest way to ensure your uTorrent download activity doesn’t leak over the VPN connection.
That way, all internet activities on your device (including P2P) are halted if the VPN loses its connection to a server.
You’ll only be able to resume once the VPN gets the server connection back, or you force the uTorrent download to start up again.
Robust uTorrent Privacy and Security
You can connect to any of IPVanish’s 2500+ servers to bypass blocks to P2P sites like The Pirate Bay and securely add torrents to be downloaded on uTorrent.
Furthermore, it hides your P2P activities from your ISP, helping you to bypass speed throttling on such activities as defined by many ISPs.
The best part is you can torrent securely with IPVanish on unlimited devices from ONE account.
