What Makes for a Great VPN Service?
VPN services, as you may already know, are great for anyone who wants to surf the web securely and privately. They’re also useful for many other activities such as streaming geo-restricted content and accessing blocked websites.
Today, there’s a ton of these services on the market. However, not every VPN service is a great choice.
Here are the factors that define whether a VPN service is excellent or mediocre.
How Secure Is the Service?
Almost every VPN service out there claims to be super secure. It’s what you expect from a VPN.
However, some services offer better encryption and more protocols than others.
A robust VPN service also provides useful security features such as a killswitch, IP and DNS leak protection, and even double encryption.
How Fast Is the Service?
Connecting to the internet over a VPN service will impact your connection speeds.
However, if you’ve got a great VPN service, you might not even notice any difference.
On the other hand, a mediocre service will virtually cripple your connection with slow speeds.
Does the Service Unblock Netflix?
The ability to unblock sites like Netflix is one of the reasons many go after VPN services.
For many VPN services, however, Netflix is a tough nut to crack.
Only the tougher services can get past Netflix’s restrictions.
Does It Have a Proven No-Logs Policy?
A VPN service can help you keep your online activities private.
What, though, if the one spying on you is your VPN service provider?
That would doubly suck, wouldn’t it?
Is the VPN Service Provider Trustworthy?
Many VPN services claim to be secure, reliable, speedy, and easy to use.
But are they trustworthy?
Can you rest assured in the knowledge that they would never secretly log your data and sell it to third parties? What is their reputation like on the internet?
How Much Value for Money Are You Getting?
The pricing of these VPN services varies so much that it can be a bit puzzling to know how much value you’re getting for the price you’re paying.
A great VPN service offers the right mix of features and affordability.
If a VPN doesn’t have a feature you need, you obviously won’t get it even if it’s super affordable.
Before we get started with the detailed comparison between these two VPN services, here are the strengths and weaknesses of each respective service.
CyberGhost Weaknesses and Strengths
NordVPN Weaknesses and Strengths
Jurisdiction and Privacy
CyberGhost VPN is registered in Romania, a country out of the reach of the 14-eyes alliance.
NordVPN, on the other hand, is located in Panama, which is also an excellent location for a VPN service. There are no data retention laws in these regions, and neither is part of any intelligence-sharing agencies.
When it comes to activity logs, NordVPN doesn’t keep any. Your online activities are not monitored, logged, or passed on to third parties.
CyberGhost also boasts a strict no-logging policy.
According to the no-logs policy on their website, they do not monitor or log the traffic data of their users. Connection logs, session durations, browsing history, traffic destination, and search preferences are not recorded.
While all this is great, there’s no way to verify the trustworthiness of CyberGhost’s no-logging policy. You just have to take their word for it.
NordVPN, on the other hand, has had third parties run independent audits on its services to verify the accuracy of its no-logs policy. So it does have the advantage of having a proven no-logs policy.
Countries and Servers
When it comes to server count, neither of these VPN giants is a slouch.
In fact, CyberGhost and NordVPN are so far ahead of almost every competitor in this regard.
NordVPN boasts an impressive fleet of more than 5,600 servers in 60 countries.
CyberGhost’s server and location count has been growing rapidly in recent years.
Their servers now number over 5,900 in over 90 locations.
Crazy numbers, right? These VPN services have servers in almost every major location around the world.
CyberGhost does have a slight edge numerically over NordVPN. However, NordVPN offers obfuscated, double VPN, and Onion over VPN servers in locations such as the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and France. Besides, CyberGhost has a limited number of servers in Asia, with most of their servers based in the United States, and Europe.
Protocols and Encryption
In the area of protocols, you’re covered whichever way you go. Both VPN services support major protocols such as OpenVPN, IPSec, and L2TP. NordVPN is also testing out the new WireGuard protocol.
On the encryption front, NordVPN offers AES-256-GCM encryption along with perfect forward secrecy on iOS and Mac OS clients. If you use the OpenVPN protocol, you get 256-AES-CBC encryption with a 2048bit DH key.
You also get AES-256-bit encryption with CyberGhost VPN. NordVPN, however, has some more tricks up its sleeve. If you turn on their double encryption feature, your data will be relayed via two subsequent servers before it reaches its destination. Thus, your traffic will be encrypted twice.
Feature-packed. That’s one way to describe both VPN services.
Besides hiding your IP address, these services offer a great many additional features.
Both NordVPN and CyberGhost offer an ad-blocker, a feature some will appreciate.
With both services, you also get a kill switch and DNS leak protection.
NordVPN also delivers SmartPlay, a feature which allows you to stream geo-restricted services. The Onion Over VPN feature lets you route your traffic through their VPN and then through the TOR network for added protection.
Other CyberGhost features include automated HTTPS redirection and optional data compression.
When it comes to software, CyberGhost offers custom clients for Mac OS, Windows, iOS, Android, and fireTV. You also get extensions for Chrome and Firefox.
NordVPN, likewise, supports all those platforms except fireTV, and Linux as well. Both services provide tutorials for setting up custom connections or other devices such as routers.
Ease of Use
So how easy is it to set up and use the software clients on your devices?
Well, for CyberGhost, very easy. Downloading and setting up the clients on any platform is as simple as downloading the installer and installing the program.
CyberGhost’s Windows client is also an appealing experience. You get a lot of control over the client functionality in a familiar, easy-to-use interface.
Whether you’re a tech expert or a newbie, you’ll likely enjoy using CyberGhost’s applications.
Same goes for NordVPN, whose interface is a bit different. You get a fancy world map on your screen with markers where servers are located. It’s cool, but if you prefer choosing from a list rather than zooming and panning to find a location, you have that option also.
While the apps aren’t perfect, they get the job done and are quite easy to use.
You also get the same layout and design on the Android and iOS apps.
Which Service Is Better for Streaming?
Unblocking Netflix is not an easy task for most VPNs.
CyberGhost and NordVPN, however, are up to the task. Apart from unblocking Netflix, they also let you access other streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, Youtube, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, among others.
CyberGhost’s software clients highlight recommended server locations for various streaming services. The service was able to unblock Netflix US with its Netflix-optimized servers in the United States. This feature saves you the hassle of having to blindly try servers randomly to until you find a server that works with Netflix.
NordVPN, similarly, had no issues with unblocking Netflix. If you’re looking for a VPN service specifically for streaming purposes, both CyberGhost and NordVPN will serve you just fine.
Torrenting and P2P Support
CyberGhost is great for torrenting, and the service isn’t afraid to let you know that.
In fact, they’ve got a ‘for Torrenting’ list of servers in their software clients.
Stick to the recommended list of servers, and you should have no issues with torrenting. However, if you connect randomly to any server, you may run into problems.
Torrent traffic is blocked on certain servers.
CyberGhost also offers other helpful features including a malicious URL filter, and the ability to connect automatically to your preferred server when you launch a torrent client.
NordVPN claims to the best VPN for P2P. That claim isn’t entirely unfounded. Just like with CyberGhost, torrenting isn’t supported on every NordVPN server.
Nonetheless, there are hundreds of compatible servers across the globe.
You also get a ‘P2P’ option in their software to enable you to connect easily to an ideal torrent-friendly server. Better still, the software can automatically redirect your traffic through a P2P-friendly server once it detects P2P traffic.
Once again, both services are neck and neck when it comes to support for torrenting.
They’re both excellent in this regard, and I really can’t recommend one over the other.
Local Connection Speeds
As we’ve seen so far, NordVPN and CyberGhost are really in the top echelon of VPN services.
They’re feature-packed, great for streaming and torrenting, secure, and easy to use.
Now it’s time for the defining section if you will – the speed comparison.
Let’s see how well these services will perform when connected to local and international servers over a 100 Mbps connection (ping: 8ms, upload: 55 Mbps).
International Connection Speeds
Clearly, NordVPN performs better than CyberGhost in the area of speed.
A connection to a NordVPN server in the UK busted speeds down by just approximately 24% while CyberGhost cut speeds almost in half.
It’s the same story with international servers as CyberGhost provides much more reduced speeds compared to NordVPN.
Let’s start with the positives: both services offer 24/7 live chat support.
And we’re talking about real live-chat, unlike with some services where “live-chat” support representatives are never available when you need them.
Not only do you get instantaneous replies, but you also receive accurate, detailed responses that will usually help to resolve your problem. Of course, email support is also available if you need further help.
NordVPN’s knowledge base has hundreds of guides and tutorials.
While the organization of the support website could be better, it’s nice to see so many helpful articles which you can locate quite easily with the search tool.
CyberGhost’s support site is equally impressive when it comes to comprehensiveness.
There’s an article or a guide for almost everything you can think of.
Unfortunately, the quality of these guides and tutorials isn’t always helpful, accurate, or even clear. The organization of these support articles isn’t intuitive either, and the search results don’t seem to be sorted by how useful the content is.
Customer support is great on both services, but NordVPN is the better option in this regard.
A monthly NordVPN subscription will set you back $11.95 every month.
While that’s not the most affordable monthly plan you can find, it’s cheaper than CyberGhost’s monthly plan, which goes for $12.99.
Ok, these services do not have cheap monthly plans.
However, if you’re willing to commit for more extended periods, they become much more affordable. NordVPN’s 3-year plan, for example, costs just $3.49/month. That’s a bargain right there.
But it gets even better with CyberGhost. Their 3-year plan will set you back just $2.75/month.
That’s one of the cheapest plans you’ll find. In fact, aside from it’s the slightly more expensive monthly plan, all other CyberGhost plans are less costly than their NordVPN counterparts.
Here’s a quick comparison table.
|CyberGhost Pricing||NordVPN Pricing|
|Monthly Plan: $12.99/mo||Monthly Plan: $11.95/mo|
|1-Year Plan: $5.99/mo||1-Year Plan: $6.99/mo|
|2-Year Plan: $3.69/mo||2-Year Plan: $4.99/mo|
|3-Year Plan: $2.75/mo||3-Year Plan: $3.49/mo|
|Money-back Guarantee: 45 days||Money-back Guarantee: 30 days|
You can purchase a NordVPN subscription with a Credit Card, AliPay, PayPal, and Bitcoin, among other payment methods. CyberGhost also allows you to pay with Bitcoin in addition to Credit Cards and PayPal.
NordVPN offers an unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee, which is great.
There are no free trials available, however.
CyberGhost, on the other hand, offers a 45-day money-back guarantee for plans over a year in length. If you go with a monthly subscription, you only get 14 days to decide whether you want a refund or not. Just like NordVPN, their money-back guarantees are unconditional.
In addition, you do get a 1-day free trial, which is better than nothing, at least.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this detailed look at the similarities and differences between these two VPN services. You’ll likely agree that there’s more to choosing a VPN wisely than meets the eye.
CyberGhost and NordVPN are undoubtedly excellent choices for a VPN, and you likely won’t be disappointed either way. It’s no wonder they are on so many ‘recommended VPNs’ lists on the internet.
Nonetheless, if you’re looking for the very best – and you should be, NordVPN is the better service.
It triumphs in the areas of privacy, security, speed, and customer support.
That said, CyberGhost didn’t go down without a fight and is worthy of your consideration and possibly, even a trial.
The choice is yours, and you’ve been equipped to make a good one.
