Method 2: Router Set Up
It’s vital to identify routers compatible with CyberGhost before starting this process.
There are two main ways of getting CyberGhost on a router:
- Using a Flashrouter preinstalled with CyberGhost (Netgear, Asus, Linksys).
- Installing custom firmware (DD-WRT, TomatoUSB, sveasoft) on an existing router.
Here’s a simple guide on setting up CyberGhost on an Asus router for Fortnite gaming:
- Get a CyberGhost subscription if you don’t have one. (Get savings here).
- Visit your CyberGhost Online Account and log in with your credentials (Email, password).
- Go to VPN > Manual Setup > Configure Device.
- Create your server configuration as follows:
- Protocol: OpenVPN.
- Country: Choose an appropriate country for Fortnite, and CyberGhost will automatically choose the best server in that country.
- Server Group: Select the server group you prefer together with the Open VPN (TCP/UDP Protocol).
- Device Name: Router.
- Tick all the boxes under extra features (Block online tracking, block online Ads, etc).
- Click “Save Configuration.” This will redirect you to the Manage Devices page.
- Go to VPN > Routers or other devices on the “Manage Devices” page and click “View.”
- Note your “USERNAME” and “PASSWORD” before clicking “Download Configuration.”
- Unzip the download and save it on your computer. You should have four files: ca-crt, client.crt, client.key & openvpn.ovpn.
- Connect your router to the internet and login with your credentials. I’ll use an Asus router for this guide.
- Go to VPN > VPN Client > Add Profile on your router.
- Fill in “Description” with an appropriate name. Next, fill in “Username” and “Password” with the credentials from step 6.
- Locate the file openvpn.ovpn (from Step 7) and click upload. (You’ll get an error: lack of client key/lack of client certificate & lack of certificate authority).
- Go to “import CA file or edit manually.”
- Click “Edit manually.”
- Copy & paste “ca-crt” into the Certificate Authority Box.
- Copy & paste “client.crt” into the Client Certificate Box.
- Copy & paste “client.key” into the Client Key Box.
- Leave static key & certificate revocation boxes blank.
- Click Save > Connect.
- Now connect any device (PC, Mobile, console) to the router, launch Fortnite, and enjoy fast and secure gaming.
Method 3: Virtual Router Set Up
This method works best if your router isn’t VPN-compatible and you don’t want to invest in new hardware.
So, let’s create a virtual router for a PS4 console using a Windows PC:
- Purchase a CyberGhost plan. I recommend the multi-year subscription for its excellent long-term cost savings.
- Download the CyberGhost VPN app for your PC. I’ll use a Windows 11 device for this guide.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot on your PC.
- Turn on “Mobile hotspot” and click “Edit” to change the network name and password.
- Click “Advanced network settings.”
- Click “More network adapter options” and ensure the green light under “Wi-Fi” is on.
- Right-click “CyberGhost” and select “Properties.”
- Under “Sharing,” tick “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” and click “OK.”
- On your PS4, go to “Settings” to connect to the hotspot you’ve just created.
- Launch CyberGhost on your PC and connect to an appropriate server for Fortnite.

While playing the fast and resource-heavy Barebones mode on a CyberGhost – New York server, I recorded 10 to 20 ms pings, fast enough for lag-free gaming.
I also tested CyberGhost for packet losses while running the newest Fortnite challenge quests. This was on the Germany – Frankfurt server, where I recorded a 1% packet loss.
