Yes – for most people, NordVPN is safe and worth paying for, as long as you buy a long plan. Its no-logs promise has been checked by independent auditors six times, it operates from Panama, which has no mandatory data retention law, and its 2-year deal costs $3.49 a month.

It isn’t perfect. It’s not the cheapest VPN, it costs about three times as much per month once the plan renews, and one account covers 10 devices rather than unlimited. Below is the evidence for each part of the answer, with prices checked at NordVPN’s US checkout on 1 October 2026.

Is NordVPN Safe?

A VPN sees everything your internet provider used to see, so the real question is whether it keeps any of it. NordVPN says it doesn’t, and that claim has been tested more often than most:

  • Six independent no-logs assessments. PwC checked NordVPN in 2018 and 2020, and Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The latest, carried out by Deloitte Lithuania at the end of 2025 under the ISAE 3000 standard and published in February 2026, covered its standard servers and specialty servers such as Double VPN and Onion Over VPN. It found them in line with the no-logs policy, and subscribers can read the full report in their Nord Account.
  • A privacy-friendly home. The service is provided by nordvpn S.A. in Panama, and NordVPN says that because Panama has no mandatory data retention law, it doesn’t need to store logs.
  • Servers it owns, running from RAM. Since 2020 NordVPN has been moving to colocated servers that it owns and operates and that run from memory, so nothing is written to a hard drive that could be taken or copied.
  • Protection if the connection drops. Every app has a kill switch that cuts your internet if the VPN disconnects, and the default NordLynx protocol is built on WireGuard, a modern and lean design.

Has NordVPN Ever Been Hacked?

Once, and it’s the main mark against it. Between 31 January and 20 March 2018, an attacker got into one server at a data centre NordVPN rented in Finland, through a remote-management tool the data centre had left insecure.

The breach became public in October 2019, when NordVPN confirmed it. The company said the server held no user activity logs and that no usernames, passwords or billing details were exposed, and there’s no evidence the access was used to spy on anyone’s traffic.

What followed matters more than the incident itself. NordVPN commissioned more independent audits, launched a bug bounty that pays outside researchers for finding flaws, and began replacing rented servers with colocated, RAM-only hardware of its own.

Is NordVPN Trustworthy?

Trust comes down to who runs a VPN and how open they are about it:

  • Known owners. NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, founded by three Lithuanian entrepreneurs and backed by investors such as Warburg Pincus and General Catalyst. Our guide to who owns NordVPN covers the details, including why it isn’t Israeli-owned.
  • Outside scrutiny. Besides the no-logs audits, NordVPN says it regularly submits its apps to third-party testing, runs a bug bounty and publishes a Trust Center. It’s also a founding member of the VPN Trust Initiative, an industry group that sets standards for VPN providers.
  • A long track record. The service has been running since 2012.

Is NordVPN Good?

On features, NordVPN is one of the most complete VPNs you can buy, and the core of it is the same on every plan:

  • 8,400+ servers in 167+ countries, including servers optimised for P2P, so torrenting with NordVPN is allowed
  • Double VPN, which routes your traffic through two servers, and Onion Over VPN for reaching the Tor network
  • Obfuscated servers for networks that try to block VPN traffic
  • Scam and phishing protection and Dark Web Monitor, which alerts you if your email turns up in a leak
  • 10 devices at once, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android, smart TVs and browsers

It also works with the big streaming services; see how to watch Netflix with NordVPN. For our hands-on testing of speed, streaming and the apps, read the full NordVPN review.

Is NordVPN Worth the Money?

On a long plan, yes. Here’s what NordVPN cost when we checked on 1 October 2026:

Plan2 years + 3 monthsThen each yearMonth to month
Basic$94.23 ($3.49/mo)$139.08$14.99
Complete$121.23 ($4.49/mo)$219.48$19.99
Ultra$177.93 ($6.59/mo)$269.88$22.89

Basic is all most people need. Complete adds anti-malware, an ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and 1 TB of cloud storage for $27 more over 27 months, which is good value if you’d otherwise pay for any of those separately. Our NordVPN price guide compares the plans in full, and the NordVPN coupon page lists every discount running now, including an extra 15% for students, teachers and the military.

The catch is renewal. After the first 27 months, Basic renews at $139.08 a year, about three times its intro rate per month. Set a reminder before your plan renews, and see our NordVPN renewal discount guide for ways to bring that price down.

When NordVPN Isn’t Worth It

NordVPN is a strong default, but it’s the wrong pick in a few cases:

  • You want the lowest price or more than 10 devices. Surfshark costs $2.49 a month on its 2-year Starter plan and covers unlimited devices.
  • You only need a VPN for a few weeks. At $14.99, NordVPN’s monthly plan is poor value. Use the 7-day free trial or the 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
  • You need port forwarding. NordVPN doesn’t offer it on its regular plans; our NordVPN port forwarding guide lists alternatives.
  • You won’t pay at all. NordVPN has no free plan. Our list of the best free VPNs covers the safest options.

How to Try NordVPN Before You Commit

  • 30-day money-back guarantee: everyone else pays up front and can ask for a full refund within 30 days. Here’s how to cancel and get your money back.

FAQ

Is NordVPN Safe to Use?

Yes. NordVPN’s no-logs policy has passed six independent assessments, by PwC in 2018 and 2020 and by Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. It operates from Panama, which has no mandatory data retention law, and its apps include a kill switch and the WireGuard-based NordLynx protocol.

Is NordVPN Legit?

Yes. NordVPN has been running since 2012 and is owned by Nord Security, a cybersecurity company backed by investors such as Warburg Pincus and General Catalyst. You can try it free for 7 days in 15 countries, including the US, and every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Has NordVPN Ever Been Hacked?

Once. In early 2018 an attacker got into one server at a data centre NordVPN rented in Finland, through the provider’s insecure remote-management tool. It became public in October 2019; NordVPN said no user activity logs or credentials were exposed, and it later moved to colocated servers it owns, running from RAM.

Is NordVPN Better Than Surfshark?

It depends on what you need. NordVPN has the bigger network and a longer record of no-logs audits; Surfshark is cheaper ($2.49 a month on its 2-year Starter plan) and covers unlimited devices. Both now belong to the same holding company but run separately.

Does NordVPN Have a Free Version?

No. NordVPN has no free plan, but new customers in 15 countries, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, get a 7-day free trial, and every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The Bottom Line

NordVPN is safe, well-audited and full-featured, and on the 2-year deal it’s fairly priced for what you get. Buy it for 2 years rather than month to month, keep an eye on the renewal date, and use the free trial or the 30-day guarantee to make sure it suits your connection.
