NordVPN is a paid VPN (virtual private network) service: an app that encrypts your internet connection and routes it through one of its 7,000+ servers in 150 countries, so your internet provider can’t see the sites you visit and websites see the server’s IP address instead of yours. It’s run by nordvpn S.A. in Panama, part of the Nord Security group, has been around since 2012, works on 10 devices at once and costs from $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan.

NordVPN’s Black Friday sale has been running since 21 October 2026, and on the 2-year plans it mostly cuts the price of the middle tier: Complete, which adds antivirus and a password manager, is now $3.99 a month, only $13.50 more than Basic over 27 months. All prices below are from NordVPN’s US pricing page on 22 October 2026.

How Does NordVPN Work?

NordVPN puts an encrypted tunnel between your device and one of its servers, and everything you do online travels through that server. In the words of NordVPN’s help center, your traffic “is encrypted and sent through your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a NordVPN server, where it’s decrypted and then sent to its final destination.” In practice:

  1. You connect. You click “Secure my connection” and the app picks a server, or you choose a country.
  2. Your device encrypts your traffic. Your internet provider, mobile carrier or Wi-Fi owner sees only scrambled data going to a NordVPN server, not the sites and apps you use.
  3. The server passes it on. It decrypts your request and sends it to the website or app.
  4. Websites see the server, not you. They get the server’s IP address and location, which is how NordVPN changes your virtual location.

Three things under the hood decide how well that works:

  • The protocol. NordVPN connects with NordLynx by default, its version of WireGuard, which encrypts traffic with ChaCha20 and adds what NordVPN calls a “double NAT system” for privacy. You can switch to NordWhisper, its own protocol for networks that block VPNs, or to OpenVPN (AES-256-GCM) or IKEv2. NordVPN’s help center now also explains how to set up plain WireGuard by hand, in the WireGuard app.
  • Post-quantum encryption. NordLynx connections can add encryption designed to resist future quantum computers, in the Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV and Android TV apps.
  • What’s kept. NordVPN says it stores only your email address, encrypted login details and payment records, not what you do online, and its servers run from RAM.

A VPN doesn’t make you anonymous, though: sites you sign in to still know who you are, and cookies and browser fingerprinting still work. And because your data takes a detour, a nearby server is usually faster than a distant one.

What Is NordVPN Used For?

Most people buy NordVPN for one or more of these six jobs.

Privacy at Home and on Public Wi-Fi

On hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi, NordVPN stops the network’s owner, and anyone snooping on it, from seeing what you do; at home, it hides your browsing from your internet provider. Turn on auto-connect so it starts on every network, and the kill switch so nothing leaks if the connection drops.

Streaming

Connect to a server in another country and a streaming service usually shows that country’s catalog. NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature, on in every app, is built to help, but no VPN works every time: Netflix shows error E106 when it detects a VPN and doesn’t support VPNs at all on its ad-supported plans. Our guides cover Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, YouTube TV and BBC iPlayer.

Gaming

NordVPN says every standard server supports gaming. A VPN hides your home IP address from other players, which helps against DDoS attacks, and lets you join servers in other regions, at the cost of some extra ping; see NordVPN for gaming. Consoles have no NordVPN app, so they connect through NordVPN on a router or a computer’s shared connection.

Torrenting

NordVPN allows P2P file sharing, and it recently dropped its separate list of P2P servers because every standard server now supports it. It doesn’t offer port forwarding on regular servers, which some torrent setups need (NordVPN and port forwarding). Start with our guide to torrenting with NordVPN, and stick to files you have the right to share.

Travel and Censorship

Abroad, a US server lets you use your banking, streaming and shopping apps as if you were home. Where the internet is restricted, NordVPN’s obfuscated servers, which now run on NordWhisper, disguise VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic. Results depend on the country: NordVPN has no servers in China and says it doesn’t operate in Russia, while Turkey and the UAE have NordVPN servers. See NordVPN in China, in Turkey, in the Middle East and in Russia.

Remote Access and Work

Meshnet, which NordVPN kept after announcing in 2025 that it would shut it down, links up to 10 of your own devices and 50 other people’s in a private, encrypted network: reach your home computer from anywhere, share files, play LAN games or route your traffic through home (how to use NordVPN Meshnet). If a bank, employer or service only lets in known IP addresses, a NordVPN dedicated IP gives you one nobody else uses.

NordVPN Plans and Prices: Basic, Complete and Prime

NordVPN sells three plans in the US. All three include the full VPN; they differ in the security extras. Here’s what they cost on 22 October 2026, during NordVPN’s Black Friday sale (before sales tax):

Plan2 years + 3 monthsThen per year
Basic$94.23 ($3.49/mo)$139.08
Complete$107.73 ($3.99/mo)$219.48
Prime$188.73 ($6.99/mo)$296.28

The 1-year plans also come with 3 extra months right now (15 months for $74.85, $89.85 or $134.85), and month to month costs $14.99, $19.99 or $29.99. NordVPN’s “78% off” is Complete’s 2-year saving against its renewal price (Basic saves 69%, Prime 71%).

  • Basic: the VPN on 10 devices with every server and feature, scam and phishing protection that filters out ads and dangerous sites while you’re connected, and Dark Web Monitor for up to five email addresses.
  • Complete: adds next-gen antivirus and an ad and tracker blocker for Windows and Mac, scam protection for calls and text messages, the NordPass password manager, 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage, bank transaction monitoring and Dark Web Monitor Pro, which also watches your phone, card and Social Security numbers.
  • Prime: adds Coveron identity protection, help freezing your credit with TransUnion, identity theft insurance up to $1 million and cyber extortion insurance up to $100,000.

Two extras cost more at checkout, whichever plan you pick: a dedicated IP ($3.69 a month) and Incogni, the data-removal service ($4.49 a month for Incogni Standard). No US plan includes Incogni.

Our pick: Basic if you only want the VPN. While the sale lasts, Complete is the better buy if you’d otherwise pay for antivirus or a password manager: it costs $13.50 more than Basic for 27 months, against $27 more on 1 October. Prime is only worth it for the insurance and the credit help.

Mind the renewal: after the first 27 months, Basic renews at $139.08 a year ($11.59 a month), more than three times its intro rate. Our NordVPN price guide breaks down every plan and term, the NordVPN coupon page lists the discounts running now, and the renewal discount guide shows how to pay less the second time around.

NordVPN Features Explained

Every plan gets these features unless a line says otherwise:

  • NordLynx: the default protocol, built on WireGuard. NordVPN recommends it for speed, and it’s the only protocol with post-quantum encryption.
  • NordWhisper: NordVPN’s own protocol for restrictive networks such as office, campus and hotel Wi-Fi, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
  • Kill switch: blocks your internet if the VPN drops; on Windows, an app kill switch can also close programs you pick. The iPhone and App Store Mac apps call it “VPN bypass prevention”.
  • Threat Protection: NordVPN’s built-in blocker, now being renamed, so your app may say “Real-time protection” or “Next-gen antivirus”. Every plan filters out ads and malicious sites while you’re connected; Complete and Prime add an antivirus for Windows and Mac that scans downloads, even with the VPN off.
  • Meshnet: a private, encrypted network between your devices, and up to 50 other people’s, for remote access, file sharing and LAN games.
  • Double VPN: sends your traffic through two VPN servers and encrypts it twice. It’s slower; NordVPN pitches it at journalists, activists and anyone else who needs extra privacy.
  • Onion Over VPN: routes your traffic through a NordVPN server and then the Tor network, without the Tor Browser. It only works over OpenVPN.
  • Obfuscated servers: hide the fact that you’re using a VPN, for networks and countries that block VPNs. They now run on NordWhisper, so a manual OpenVPN setup can no longer reach them.
  • Dedicated IP: an IP address only you use, which means fewer CAPTCHAs and access to services that only let in known addresses; a $3.69-a-month add-on that takes up to three business days to set up.
  • Split tunneling: lets the apps you choose skip the VPN, on Windows, Android and Android TV; on Linux, an allowlist does the same for ports and subnets.
  • Dark Web Monitor: alerts you when your email address turns up in a data leak. Complete and Prime extend it to your phone, card and Social Security numbers.
  • SmartPlay and SmartDNS: SmartPlay is built into every app and helps with streaming; SmartDNS changes only your DNS, for TVs that can’t run the app, and doesn’t encrypt anything.

Who Makes NordVPN, and Is It Safe?

NordVPN is provided by nordvpn S.A. in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention law, and belongs to Nord Security, a cybersecurity group with Lithuanian roots that is based in the Netherlands. It started in 2012 as a Windows VPN configuration; the first app followed in 2013. Since 2022, Nord Security has shared a holding company with Surfshark, though the two VPNs run separately. More in who owns NordVPN.

On safety, the record holds up:

  • Six no-logs assessments. PwC checked NordVPN’s no-logs policy in 2018 and 2020, and Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025; the latest report was published in February 2026. Our analysis of whether NordVPN keeps logs explains what it does and doesn’t record.
  • One breach, in 2018. An attacker got into a single server NordVPN rented in Finland. It became public in October 2019, and NordVPN then moved to colocated servers it owns, running from RAM.
  • Outside checks of the apps. NordVPN’s Google Play listing carries Google’s “Independent security review” label for the Android app.

How to Start Using NordVPN in 5 Steps

Setting NordVPN up takes a few minutes. These steps use the button names from NordVPN’s own Windows setup guide; the Mac, phone and TV apps work the same way.

  1. Choose a plan on NordVPN’s deal page and pay by card or PayPal. Basic is enough for most people.
  2. Download the app for your device from NordVPN’s download page or your app store.
  3. Click “Log In” in the app, then sign in to your Nord Account in the browser window that opens.
  4. Click “Secure my connection.” The status changes from “Not connected” to “Connected”.
  5. Turn on the Kill Switch in the app’s Settings, so your real IP address stays hidden if the connection drops.

Then switch on Auto-connect (under “Connection and security” on Windows) and repeat on your other devices, up to 10. The app shows a green “Connected” banner when you’re protected.

NordVPN vs Other VPNs

NordVPN is our first pick for most people: it covers more countries than ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access (113 each) or Surfshark (100), and its no-logs policy has been checked six times. Another VPN makes more sense in a few cases:

If you want…Look atCompare
A lower price and unlimited devicesSurfshark: $2.49 a month on its 2-year plan, from the same group as NordVPN Surfshark vs NordVPN
A free planProton VPN: its free plan has no data or time limits Proton VPN vs NordVPN

Another premium all-rounderExpressVPN: servers in 113 countries ExpressVPN vs NordVPN

If NordVPN isn’t right for you, Surfshark is the one we’d try next: it’s cheaper, has no device limit and comes from the same group. Start with what Surfshark is and how it works, or see every option, by reason for switching, in our best NordVPN alternatives.

FAQ

Can NordVPN Be Used on Multiple Devices?

Yes. One NordVPN account works on up to 10 devices at once, from computers and phones to TVs and browsers. A router running NordVPN takes just one of those slots but protects every device on its network.

Can I Be Tracked If I Use NordVPN?

Less easily, but yes. NordVPN hides your IP address from websites and your browsing from your internet provider, and its no-logs policy has been independently checked six times. But sites you sign in to still know who you are, and cookies and browser fingerprinting still work, so a VPN on its own doesn’t make you anonymous.

What Are the Different NordVPN Plans and How Much Do They Cost?

NordVPN sells three plans in the US: Basic (the VPN), Complete (adds antivirus, a password manager and 1 TB of cloud storage) and Prime (adds identity theft insurance and credit protection). During its Black Friday sale, on 22 October 2026, the 2-year plans cost $3.49, $3.99 and $6.99 a month ($94.23, $107.73 and $188.73 for 27 months).

Why Is Netflix Blocking NordVPN?

When Netflix detects a VPN, it shows error E106 (“You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”) or only titles it licenses worldwide, and it doesn’t support VPNs at all on ad-supported plans or for live events. Close Netflix, connect to another server in the same country and clear the app’s cache; on an ad plan, no VPN will help.

Is NordVPN Free?

No. NordVPN has no free plan, but new customers in the US and 14 other countries can try it free for 7 days on a 1- or 2-year plan of its top tier (Prime in the US), paying by card or PayPal. Every plan also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Is NordVPN Safe to Use?

Yes. NordVPN’s no-logs policy has passed six independent assessments, by PwC in 2018 and 2020 and by Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, and its servers run from RAM. Its one known breach, of a single rented server in Finland in 2018, became public in October 2019, after which NordVPN moved to colocated servers it owns.

The Bottom Line

NordVPN does the core job of a VPN well: it encrypts your connection on up to 10 devices, has 7,000+ servers in 150 countries and a no-logs policy checked six times, and its higher plans add antivirus, a password manager and identity protection. Basic on the 2-year plan ($3.49 a month) is enough for most people; while the Black Friday sale lasts, Complete at $3.99 a month is the better deal if you’ll use the extras. Note the renewal price, and use the free trial or the 30-day guarantee to check it suits you.
