Tablet Market and Revenue Statistics

1. In Q4 of 2022, 45.7 million tablets were shipped worldwide.

That figure is higher than the number of tablet units shipped in Q3 of 2022 by 7.1 million. Overall, 163.2 million tablets were shipped in 2022.

2. In 2021, there were 1.28 billion tablet users worldwide.

Over 16% of the world’s population used tablets in 2021.

3. The tablet market fell by 16% in Q3 of 2022.

The drop in the market resulted from the post-pandemic behavioral shift of the buyers. However, the declines in sales of the biggest tablet market players, Apple and Samsung, were only 5% and 4%, respectively.

4. The global tablet market is expected to reach $147.38 billion by 2027.

In 2023, the tablet market will reach $94.96 billion at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.9%. Additionally, the figure of $147.38 billion is predicted due to the CAGR of 11.6%.

5. M-commerce tablet sales are forecast to drop by $7 billion by 2026.

In 2022, purchases made on tablet devices (m-commerce) amounted to $61.08 billion. They are expected to drop down to $54.01 billion by 2026.

Tablet Statistics by Brand

6. Apple had the largest tablet market share in Q4 of 2022 worldwide.

In October-December 2022, Apple’s tablet market share was 50.68-51.21% worldwide. In January 2023, it was 51.48%.

7. In the US, Apple’s tablet market share was 53.46% in January 2023.

Samsung’s share in the US tablet market in January 2023 was 20.7%, and Amazon had 11.69%. The table below shows the tablet market shares of Apple in January 2023, compared to other providers in different regions:

8. Apple iPad sales accounted for 8% of revenue in Q4 of 2022.

That is an increase compared with the Q1 2022 revenue from iPad sales, which amounted to 5% of the total Apple revenue. The lion’s share of the brand’s revenue in the fourth quarter of 2022 was brought by iPhones (48%) and services (21.3%).

9. In Q3 of 2022, iPad sales brought Apple $7.12 billion in revenue.

The brand was the leader in tablet sales in the quarter. Samsung shipped 7.3 million, and Huawei 2.1 million during that period.

11. In 2022, Apple shipped twice as many tablets as Samsung.

Throughout 2022, Apple shipped 61.8 million tablets worldwide, with Samsung shipping over 50% less at 30.3 million. Amazon and Lenovo shipped 16 and 11.6 million tablets in 2022, respectively.

12. Apple’s share of the Chinese tablet market dropped 8.5% in January 2023.

In December 2022, Apple’s share of the Chinese tablet market was 76.03%

That share dropped in January 2023 to 67.58%.

13. Apple and Samsung produced the most popular tablet models sold in Q1 of 2022.

Apple’s bestsellers in Q1 of 2022 were the iPad 2021, iPad Mini 2021, iPad Pro 2021, and iPad Air 2020 models. Samsung’s most popular tablet sold in that period was Galaxy Tab 8.

14. Dell Technologies had the largest share of the Chromebook tablet market in Q2 2022.

In the second quarter of 2022, Dell Technologies’ share of the Chromebook tablet market was 25.5%. Acer followed closely behind with 22.6%. Samsung had the smallest share of that market, with 6.2%.

15. Dell shipped the most Chromebook tablets in Q2 of 2022.

In Q2 of 2022, Dell Technologies shipped 1.5 million tablets with Chromebook OS. 

Acer Group and Lenovo were in second and third place, with 1.3 and 1.2 million Chromebook tablets shipped in Q2 of 2022, respectively.

16. Acer shipped the most Chromebook tablets overall in 2022.

Throughout 2022, Acer shipped 4.2 million Chromebook tablets, with Dell Technologies following closely behind with 4.1 million. Lenovo and HP shipped 3.7 and 3.5 million tablets in 2022, respectively.

17. Huawei had the biggest share of the Chinese tablet market in Q2 of 2022.

The market share of Huawei tablets in China was 17.7% in Q2 of 2022, with Apple taking the top spot with 23.8%. Huawei managed to ship 1.03 million tablets in China in that period, and Apple almost 1.4 million.

Tablet Statistics by Region

18. The market share of tablets worldwide was 2.07% in January 2023.

That is a few percentage points higher than November and December 2022 (1.98% and 2%, respectively). The share of desktop devices in January 2023 was 39.41% worldwide, and mobile devices held the majority of the market at 58.52%.

19. In January 2023, the tablet market share in the USA was 2.9%.

The market share of desktop computers in that period was 49.85%

The mobile segment had 47.26% of the market share.

20. The UK has the largest tablet market share in Europe.

In the first month of 2023, the UK’s tablet market share was 5%

France had the second largest share, with 3.32%. Poland was at the bottom of the European market, with 0.38% of the market belonging to tablets.

21. The UK is predicted to have 37.47 million tablet users by 2028.

The number of UK tablet users is expected to increase by 3.01 million between 2022 and 2028. It is forecast to reach 37.47 million by 2028.

22. There were 6 million tablets shipped to Western Europe in Q3 of 2022.

Apple shipped the most tablets (2.8 million), with Samsung in second place, having shipped 1.2 million in the region. The rest were shipped by Lenovo, Amazon, Huawei, and others.

23. 44% of Canadian Internet users accessed the Internet through a tablet device in 2022.

86% of Canadian internet users used a Desktop/laptop device to access the Internet, and 75% preferred mobile devices.

24. iOS tablets dominated the tablet market in Canada as of January 2023.

25. Lenovo was the most popular tablet vendor in LATAM.

In Q2 of 2022, Lenovo had a 30% market share in Latin America (LATAM). 

430,000 Lenovo tablets were shipped there during that period.

Samsung and Apple were in second and third place, with 285,000 and 285,000 tablet units shipped to the market then, respectively.

26. In India, the market share of Acer tablets was 0.86% in March 2022.

That was the largest share Acer tablets had in 2022. By November, it dropped to 0.52% but reached 0.63% in December 2022.

Tablet Usage Statistics by Demographic

27. A third of Internet users aged 16-64 own a tablet.

33.7% of Internet users in that age bracket own a tablet device as of January 2023. That figure represents a 3.2% drop from the January 2022 figure.

28. The share of tablet usage among American 75-year-olds is 8%.

For the 65-74-year-olds, the percentage of tablet users in 2022 was 7%

Only 2% of US-based 18-24-year-olds preferred tablets to access the Internet.

29. The share of Americans using tablets for shopping was 28% in 2022.

Most US adults (76%) shopped online on mobile in 2022. 69% used desktops, and 28% used tablets for shopping. People aged 50 and over were more likely to use a tablet to shop online than younger people – 32% of tablet shoppers were aged 50-64.

30. 7% of American adults shop on a tablet weekly.

A third of American adults were shopping on mobile at least once a week in 2022. 

For desktop devices, it was one-fifth of the American adult population.

31. Over half of 65+ UK Internet users used a tablet to go online in 2021.

UK Internet users aged 65 and over formed the biggest share of users who used a tablet to access the Internet in 2021 at 52%.

21% of British women mobile gamers used a tablet in 2022 to play games

For men, the figure was 16%.

33. 63% of UK iPhone users also owned an iPad in 2022.

Only 7% of UK iPhone users also had an Android tablet, and 13% of them had an Amazon Fire tablet. Regarding Android smartphone users, 36% also owned an Android tablet, and 18% owned an iPad or an Amazon Fire tablet.

34. Chrome, Goodnotes 5, and YouTube are the most popular free iPad apps.

These three apps are the favorite free apps among iPad users as of February 2023.

35. Three of the five most popular paid iPad apps in the US are gaming apps.

As of February 2023, 3 of the top 5 paid iPad apps amongst US users are games: Minecraft, Bloons TD 6, and Geometry Dash. The other two apps are the Graphics & Design app Procreate and the Productivity app Endless Paper.

36. Procreate is the top iPad app in Australia, Brazil, and the UK.

In February 2023, the top paid iPad app for users in Australia, Brazil, the USA, the UK, and Germany was Procreate – an app for creating art and design. 

In Sweden, this app is the second most popular paid iPad app after Minecraft.

In February 2023, these two business tools were the most popular free business apps for iPad worldwide. The top paid business apps were Jump Desktop and PDF Reader Pro.

38. Almost half of tablet users worldwide use Chrome as their default browser.

As of January 2023, 48.7% of tablet users used Chrome as their primary tablet browser. 35% of users preferred Safari, and 14.19% favored Android.

The tablets’ share of the US Internet traffic makes up 2.82% of the overall American traffic in the first month of 2023.
