The original Omegle shut down in November 2023. Its users moved to sites built on the same idea, such as OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, and Monkey, and those sites get blocked on school, office, and public Wi-Fi networks and ban IP addresses just as Omegle did.
In 2026 a different company relaunched the omegle.com address as a new, 18+ video-chat service with age verification. The same VPN routine applies there too.

Step 10: Open your browser and go to OmeTV, Chatroulette, or whichever Omegle alternative you use.
Step 11: Omegle used to ask for your interests and let you pick “College student chat,” “Text,” or “Video.” On its replacements, you usually just allow camera access and start a chat, and the site picks another user for you at random.

Uh-oh! ExpressVPN Isn’t Unblocking OmeTV or Chatroulette?
Sometimes, you’ll find the chat site is still blocked even though you’re using ExpressVPN.
Omegle was 100% anonymous, so the only way it could identify users was through their IP address. That meant the only way for it to block users was by blocking their IP address, and OmeTV and Chatroulette ban people by IP address in much the same way.
On Omegle, a ban usually happened for one of three reasons:
- Too many users decided to stop chatting with you
- Someone reported you for inappropriate behavior
- You broke the site’s rules
Its replacements ban people for reports and rule-breaking too. But if you use them with ExpressVPN, it might not be you who was banned.
ExpressVPN boasts thousands of users. So even though its servers cover 113 countries, you’re still sharing them with thousands of other people.
In other words, if someone is banned while using the same server as you, you’ll also be banned by extension.
Luckily, this problem is easy to fix!
- Exit the site and clear your browser cookies in the settings tab, since a chat site can use them to recognise a banned browser.
- Close your browser.
- Disconnect from ExpressVPN by clicking on the big green button, then connect to a different server.
- Once the button turns green again, open your browser and go back to the chat site. You should be able to start a chat now!
