How to Enable VPN DDoS Protection?
After getting any of my recommended VPNs, you don’t need to buy a separate anti-DDoS package. Here’s how to enable the feature on your devices using PrivateVPN:
- Buy a Private plan. Grab these discounts and pick the multi-year deal for the best price/savings.
- Download the VPN app for your device(s). PrivateVPN allows ten simultaneous connections across PCs and mobile units.
- Launch the VPN app and install it. I’m using its Windows PC app for this demonstration.
- Log in with your account email and password. These were created in Step 1.
- Choose a suitable connection protocol from the settings. Click “Connection Type” and choose “OpenVPN (TUN+UDP+1194) (Default).” The other protocols offer DDoS protection but aren’t as fast/stable.

Can PureVPN’s Alternatives Stop All DDoS Attacks?
PrivateVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark can stop all DDoS attack types directed at individuals, developers, and other groups by masking their IP addresses so the attacker doesn’t send bad requests to their operating servers.
However, they become helpless when:
- You’ve exposed your actual IP address to the attacker, and they know where to direct the attacks.
- The attack isn’t against you but against a server you want to access.
So, even if you have their DDoS protection, you still won’t be able to access a server (such as a game server) that’s being attacked. In that case, it’s left to the server operators to ward off the attack.
Guess they’ll wish they had one of these alternatives, too.
Keep That IP Hidden
Your IP address is more than just a string of numbers. It can be used to identify you (in a torrent swarm, for example) and send bad bots your way for DDoS attacks.
