If you’re traveling to Egypt, you must prepare a reliable, trustworthy VPN before arriving – at least if you enjoy your internet freedoms.
Otherwise, you can’t even call with your family on Skype or Facebook Messenger from your hotel room!
On the flip side, if you’re an Egyptian traveling abroad, you still need a VPN because it’ll help you access local Egyptian websites from anywhere.
Don’t worry about struggling to find a VPN, though.
I did enough thorough research to comfortably recommend ExpressVPN as my top choice for the best VPN in Egypt.
Spoiler Alert: ExpressVPN uses obfuscation on all of its servers!
To find all the details – including four additional VPNs for Egypt – keep reading!
Top 3 VPNs for Egypt
With 40 Egyptian servers to help you access local content from abroad – like your online banking account or Nile TV International – CyberGhost is ready to deliver. Best of all, CyberGhost also offers obfuscated, NoSpy servers, so you can stay protected when you’re back in Egypt!
As my winning VPN for Egypt, ExpressVPN offers automatic obfuscation and RAM-only servers to ensure your online activities stay hidden from the Egyptian government and your ISP. Plus, you can count on ExpressVPN to help you unblock apps like Skype, WhatsApp, and Signal.
NordVPN’s heavy obfuscation feature promises absolute invisibility to the Egyptian government and your ISP. The provider also offers a myriad of premium security features to keep you safe, including a double VPN, Onion Over VPN, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch.
With Egyptian ISPs like Egynet and TE Data blocking access to a myriad of websites, including VPN sites, it’s essential to prepare a VPN before visiting Egypt.
Like I said, don’t worry.
I’m here to help.
In this guide, I recommend five reliable VPNs for using in and out of Egypt and explain why each one is reliable and trustworthy.
Some of the things I focus on include obfuscation and other security features, verified no-logs policies, and streaming capabilities.

I answer all the critical questions, including what to look for in the best VPN for Egypt.
Thanks to its automatically obfuscated, RAM-only servers – including one in Egypt – ExpressVPN soars above its competition as the most reliable VPN in Egypt. This means, whether you’re planning to travel to Egypt as a tourist or you’re an Egyptian going on vacation abroad, ExpressVPN will help you stay secure. For tourists inside Egypt, this means accessing blocked websites and services like VoIP platforms without the Egyptian government knowing. And for Egyptians overseas, it means using an Egyptian IP to unblock local content, like your HSBC Bank Egypt account!
Detailed List of the 5 Best VPNs for Egypt
In the next sections, I discuss in-depth why each VPN is an excellent choice for using in or out of Egypt.
So… grab your warm mug of Sahlab and get comfy because it’s time for the full report!
1. ExpressVPN – Best Choice + Egyptian Server
ExpressVPN is more than worthy of first place on my list of the best VPNs for Egypt.
For starters, all of its servers offer automatic obfuscation!
This is miles above every other VPN on my list, including NordVPN – a provider I chose specifically for its heavy obfuscation feature.
However, unlike NordVPN (which requires its obfuscation feature to be manually enabled), ExpressVPN automatically obfuscates all of its 3000+ servers, including the one in Egypt!
In other words, there’s no worry that the Egyptian government will see you using a VPN to access blocked VoIP services like Skype – or other blacklisted platforms (like porn or political news sites)!
Best of all, you can use ExpressVPN’s automatic obfuscation with all of its protocols, including the provider’s proprietary protocol, Lightway.
I actually really love Lightway.
Not only is it fast and secure, but it’s one of the only proprietary protocols out there that’s reliable enough to keep you safe from the Egyptian government’s prying eyes.
In fact, the only other providers on my list that offer proprietary protocols are NordVPN (NordLynx) and VyprVPN (Chameleon).
Moving on, for Egyptians traveling abroad, ExpressVPN’s Egyptian server option offers an easy solution for accessing local content from outside Egypt.
This is especially useful for things like logging into your e-banking account(s).
Or, if you’re a tourist or expat visiting Egypt, you can use ExpressVPN to access blocked streaming platforms like Netflix US and Hulu.
Really, in my experience, ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for streaming.
The only other VPN on my list that comes remotely close to ExpressVPN’s streaming capabilities is NordVPN.
And even then, I notice way better speeds and more reliability with ExpressVPN.
(Plus, ExpressVPN offers MediaStreamer for Smart TVs and gaming consoles!)
Of course, not everything is good news.
First, with Netflix recently upgrading its VPN-detection measures, ExpressVPN isn’t guaranteed to work with Netflix 24/7 – at least until the provider comes up with a workaround, which could take weeks (or even months).
I don't fault the provider for this at all.
I tested over 15 VPNs on my PC and Android phone immediately after the Netflix update and ExpressVPN was the only one that worked via my Android.
I believe in you, ExpressVPN!
Second, ExpressVPN is a premium VPN service that offers premium features (including a kill switch, 256-bit AES encryption, and a verified no-logs policy) – which means its subscription fees are fairly steep.
Take a look:
Luckily, we can help with the price!

2. CyberGhost – Best for Egyptian Servers | Total: 40
What earns CyberGhost its spot on my list of the most trustworthy VPNs for Egypt is its 40 Egyptian servers!
And there are so many reasons why you might need an Egyptian server.
For example, suppose you’re overseas and trying to catch up on local Egyptian news via Nile TV International or stream your favorite shows via WAVO.
If that’s the case, CyberGhost’s Egyptian servers will help you do so!
CyberGhost actually has the most Egyptian servers on my list.
Here’s a table for comparison:
Number of Egyptian Servers
(Quite the gap, eh?)
This is especially great if you’re an Egyptian traveling abroad, as it makes CyberGhost an even better choice than ExpressVPN.
Because it gives you the opportunity to connect to a new server if one isn’t working (whereas ExpressVPN only offers 1 server)!
The catch is that you’ll be stuck reconnecting until you get a new server, as all 40 are in the same city (Cairo).
CyberGhost also holds its own as far as security and privacy features go.
For obfuscation, you can opt for the provider’s NoSpy servers.
The downside: they cost extra.
I won’t lie – it’s disappointing that these aren’t included in CyberGhost’s standard package… especially as providers like NordVPN offer more security features at no additional cost.
But at least you’ll only pay (approximately) $10 more per year.
And, in any case, the extra cost is worth it because then you can continue using CyberGhost when you return to Egypt!
It also means the government and your ISP won’t see your online activities – and it’ll make accessing blocked websites a breeze!
But if you’re not willing to cough up the extra $10, CyberGhost’s standard package at least includes other essential security features, like a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and military-grade (256-bit AES) encryption.
And once a workaround is implemented, you can expect the provider to work with Netflix too!
One more downside, though.
CyberGhost’s monthly plan is expensive.
It’s actually on equal footing with ExpressVPN’s monthly plan – but ExpressVPN doesn’t charge extra for obfuscation.
Still, if you decide to add CyberGhost’s NoSpy servers to your subscription, you’ll have to choose a longer subscription anyway.
And those, at least, offer good deals (plus a 45-day money-back guarantee – which is more than any other provider on my list offers!):
However, for an even BIGGER deal, click here!
3. NordVPN – Premium Security + Heavy Obfuscation
But there is a catch.
NordVPN is ideal for tourists and/or expats planning to visit or live in Egypt.
However, as the provider doesn’t offer any Egyptian servers, it’s not the right fit for Egyptians traveling overseas.
So, if you’re looking for an ideal VPN to keep you safe in Egypt, this entry is specifically for you.
First, NordVPN’s obfuscation feature will keep your activities hidden from the Egyptian government and whatever ISP you use.
This includes helping you access blocked websites and apps, such as Skype, Facebook Messenger, and even P2P file-sharing sites like ThePirateBay.
But NordVPN’s security features don’t end there.
The VPN provider’s standard package also includes a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and military–grade encryption.
In fact, you’ll get more features with this VPN provider than any other VPN listed here!
So, all in all, NordVPN is hard to beat when it comes to having the best online security in Egypt.
Of course, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns.
Because of each security feature’s intensity, you can expect slight speed reductions when using them.
This is a bit frustrating, as some Redditors report that NordVPN only works in Egypt if its obfuscation feature is enabled.
And, again, once a workaround is found, that list will include Netflix too!
Finally, NordVPN offers affordable subscription fees (with a 30-day money-back guarantee on all of them):
But because I want you to have the best deal possible, here’s an additional EXCLUSIVE coupon! 😉
4. VyprVPN – Best for Unblocking VoIP Services
If you’re looking for the perfect solution for unblocking VoIP services in Egypt, VyprVPN is the VPN for you!
From Skype and WhatsApp to DIDLogic and VoIP.ms, this VPN provider can unblock pretty much any Voice over Internet Protocol service you can think of.
(All right, so maybe “pretty much any” is too generous… but the VPN is good at its job!)
This puts VyprVPN ahead of the other VPNs on my list in the VoIP department, including ExpressVPN!
VyprVPN also unblocks other popular websites and apps in Egypt!
This includes numerous streaming platforms, such as Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Roku, and, yes, Netflix, once the provider has a chance to combat the recent updates.
Or, if you’re looking for a way to watch WAVO/OSN from outside Egypt, VyprVPN can also help with that!
Although the provider only offers 1 Egyptian server, it’s still more than enough to get your fix of Egyptian-exclusive content (or check your online bank account).
And it’s more than NordVPN offers!
As for security…well, VyprVPN doesn’t disappoint.
In fact, the VPN provider combines obfuscation with its proprietary protocol, Chameleon, to give Egyptian users the best security possible.
This is a unique obfuscation method that no other VPN on my list can claim!
VyprVPN also provides users with a kill switch, military-grade encryption, WiFi protection, and a couple of other proprietary features (VyprDNS and VyprVPN Cloud).
However, there is some bad news.
According to several user reviews, VyprVPN is guilty of kill switch failures.
This is a risky thing, as it means if your connection drops, there’s a chance your real IP will show.
One user also mentions “app trackers:”
That said, during my research, I found more positive reviews than negative – including from Egyptian users.
Plus, to sweeten the deal, VyprVPN’s subscription fees are pretty affordable (albeit somewhat confusing):
You can also get an exclusive discount by signing up with this link!
5. Ivacy – Anonymous Sign-Up + Affordable + Fast
Ivacy closes my list of the best VPNs for Egypt with its anonymous, affordable, and fast service.
First, for an anonymous sign-up, you can use a throwaway email address and pay with a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
Next, to help keep your online activities invisible to the Egyptian government and your ISP, Ivacy offers obfuscation via its OpenVPN MultiPort feature.
However, this form of obfuscation isn’t the most secure, which is kind of disappointing considering the other VPNs on my list all offer stronger obfuscation.
Fortunately, all of Ivacy’s apps at least include a kill switch, military-grade encryption, DDoS protection, WiFi protection, and leak protection.
Plus, you’ll get access to 1 Egyptian server, so you can still access your local accounts from abroad!
And as for Ivacy’s speeds – there’s no denying the VPN is fast!
In fact, during my tests, it performed better than VyprVPN and CyberGhost and stayed neck-to-neck with ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
Here’s a quick table for comparison:
VPN Provider (Protocol)
Ivacy (OpenVPN UDP)
This means you’ll have no trouble enjoying fast speeds while unblocking websites and calling with your family on Skype (so you can tell them all about your encrypted adventures, of course)!
Now for the bad news.
I’ve had mixed experiences when trying to stream with Ivacy.
At the time of writing, despite having dedicated servers for numerous streaming platforms, Ivacy doesn’t work with Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or HBO.
So, while it does work with BBC iPlayer, if your primary purpose for using a VPN in Egypt is to stream geo-locked content, you’re better off with one of my top three recommendations.
On the bright side, I wasn’t lying about Ivacy being affordable!
In fact, the provider offers the cheapest monthly subscription fee on my list:

Buying Guide: The Best VPNs for Egypt
Perhaps you’re not in a rush to find the perfect VPN to help negate the blocks imposed by the Egyptian government?
If that’s the case, I don’t blame you for wanting to shop around!
But remember – the sooner, the better.
So, to help speed up the process, here’s my must-see buying guide for finding the most trustworthy VPN for Egypt!
Handy Check-List of Features to Look for in a VPN for Egypt!
Before you shop around, review the following check-list of must-have features:
☑ Security & Privacy
This one is a given.
With the Egyptian government and ISPs watching your every move, finding a VPN with the bare bones of security and privacy features is essential.
But what are the bare bones?
Well, you’ll want a VPN with a kill switch, leak protection, military-grade encryption, and a (preferably verified) no logs policy.
However, beyond that, you’ll want a VPN that offers some form of obfuscation.
Obfuscation is extremely important for people traveling to or living in Egypt, as it’ll keep your VPN use hidden from the government and your ISP.
Other features to look for include a double VPN, proprietary protocols, and split tunneling.
☑ Unblocks Websites
I already mentioned that numerous websites and apps are blocked in Egypt – from VoIP apps and political news websites to porn sites and P2P file-sharing sites.
So, if you want to talk with your family on Skype or catch up with present-day politics while visiting/living in Egypt, you’ll need a VPN capable of unblocking websites.
The good news is, this is a relatively easy thing for VPNs to implement.
☑ Egyptian Servers
If you’re an Egyptian traveling abroad, you’ll want a VPN that offers Egyptian servers.
However, unlike unblocking websites, it’s not as easy to find a VPN with Egyptian servers.
And when you do, the VPN will likely only offer 1-2 of them.
Luckily, 1-2 is enough!
After all, you only need an Egyptian server so you can get an Egyptian IP address to access online bank accounts (for example, your Credit Agricole account) or local streaming services like WAVO/OSN.
☑ Unblocks Streaming Services
This one is optional – but definitely worth considering!
In fact, if you find a VPN that’s capable of bypassing Netflix’s anti-VPN measures (especially the most recent ones), it’s safe to say you’ve found a solid VPN service.
Because only the best VPNs are capable of reliably unblocking Netflix!
But beyond Netflix, if you opt for a VPN that’s compatible with streaming, make sure it also unblocks other streaming platforms like Hulu, BBC iPlayer, HBO, and Disney+.
☑ Appropriately Priced
It’s way too easy to find a VPN that seems to check all the essential boxes, only to purchase it and find a better deal elsewhere.
This is why it’s vital you compare several VPN providers, their features, and their subscription plans (short and long-term) before making a final decision.
Alternatively, skip the hard part and use this exclusive deal to save on my number one VPN for Egypt!
☑ Other Features
Last but not least, depending on your reasons for wanting a VPN, you might consider additional features, such as P2P support, port forwarding, and/or proxy compatibility (like SOCKS5).
Can You Use a Free VPN in Egypt?
I don’t recommend using a free VPN in Egypt.
It’s common knowledge that the Egyptian government doesn’t respect the online privacy of people living in/visiting the country.
And that’s without throwing blocked websites into the mix.
Thus, to stay safe inside Egypt’s “walls,” you need a VPN that’s capable of protecting you – something most free VPNs can’t do.
In fact, not only do (most) free VPNs lack proper security, but they also sell your data to third parties… or worse.
However, there are ways to still enjoy a premium VPN for free while visiting Egypt, especially if your trip is less than 30 days.
First, some premium VPNs (like Surfshark and CyberGhost) offer free trials.
But if that’s not enough, you can take any premium VPN with a 30-day money-back guarantee, use it risk-free for 30 days, and then request a refund to get your money back in full.
Still, I’d like to stress the importance of using a VPN long-term.
On the other hand, if you’re an Egyptian traveling outside of Egypt – depending on the country you’re visiting and your use for a VPN – you might get away with using a free one.
Both are freemium VPNs with no data caps, strong security, and a sprinkle of servers each.
Just keep in mind neither VPN offers Egyptian servers, even in their premium packages.
Egypt’s Online Privacy Issues
You might be wondering just how invasive Egypt’s online privacy issues are.
First, let’s discuss the VoIP ban.
In 2017, in response to a terrorist attack that ended in the deaths of 47 people, the Egyptian government placed a ban on voice and video calls made via VoIP services.
The list includes Skype, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, and WhatsApp.
As of mid-2021, users confirm the block is still in place, with no official lift date in sight.
Next, in 2018, the Egyptian Parliament passed a law allowing the Egyptian government to block and punish social media accounts and/or blogs with 5,000+ followers that publish “fake news.”
This law resulted in a 10-year jail sentence and a 5-year internet ban for a lawyer who was caught insulting President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Facebook.
But the invasion of privacy and free speech doesn’t end there.
Not only can the owners of these social media accounts and websites/blogs be punished, but the readers can too.
This includes using a VPN to access them!
All in all, Egypt’s online privacy is on a steady downward spiral – making it more important than ever to secure your devices with a trustworthy, reliable VPN.
How to Get an Egyptian IP Address Using a VPN?
If you’re an Egyptian traveling abroad and you need an Egyptian IP address to access local content or accounts, here’s how to get one:
- Choose one of my recommended VPNs (or a VPN you found after thorough research) with servers in Egypt.
Here’s the table from earlier for a quick reminder:
|VPN Provider||Number of Egyptian Servers|
- Download and install the VPN app on your device(s).
- Open the VPN app and sign in to your account.
- Search for Egyptian server options by scrolling or using the search function.
- Hit connect (or similar).
- Open your browser and check for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks.
- Enjoy using your Egyptian IP address to access Egyptian-exclusive content!
How to Unblock Websites in Egypt With a VPN?
But wait! What if I told you unblocking websites in Egypt is just as easy?
Because it is!
In fact, the only thing that changes is what server you connect to – just make sure it’s a server in a country where the website you want is unblocked!
What Websites Can I Unblock in Egypt With a VPN?
There is no reliable, official, updated list of blocked websites in Egypt at the time of writing (August 2021).
However, based on research and user reports, the most problems come from VoIP, VPN, proxy, political news, P2P file–sharing, social media, gambling, and porn sites.
While not a comprehensive list, here are some examples of websites you can unblock in Egypt with a VPN:
- Facebook Messenger
- Qatar TV
- AMP Project
- Egypt Face
- Tour News
- Atlas Torproject
- Huffington Post
Are VPNs Legal in Egypt?
Yes, VPNs are legal in Egypt.
However, the Egyptian government is known to block VPN websites.
On top of that, with the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes legislation that passed in 2018, users who circumvent website bans on “fake news” sites via VPNs are now punishable by 1 year in jail and/or a fine of up to EGP100,000 if caught.
For this reason, I recommend purchasing and setting up your VPN before visiting Egypt.
Should My VPN Be On 24/7 in Egypt?
While not strictly necessary, I recommend keeping your VPN on as much as possible while in Egypt, as the country’s online privacy issues outweigh the cons of using your VPN 24/7 (such as speed loss).
Additionally, by keeping your VPN on at all times, you avoid the risk of accidentally leaking your IP when trying to access blocked sites.
Can I Use Tor Instead of a VPN in Egypt?
No, you shouldn’t use Tor instead of a VPN in Egypt.
Just like you should avoid free VPNs in Egypt, you should avoid Tor, as the browser doesn’t offer obfuscation in the way that a VPN does (or should) – and obfuscation is a must-have for any VPN in Egypt.
That said, you can use the Tor Over VPN method.
Some VPN providers, like NordVPN, even include a dedicated feature for this (Onion Over VPN).
With Egypt’s online privacy issues ever-looming, it’s essential to get set up with a VPN ASAP – but especially before you arrive in Egypt!
Luckily, signing up with a trustworthy provider is super easy.
My top recommendation is ExpressVPN, thanks to its automatic obfuscation, RAM–only servers, and other premium security features.
But remember – this deal won’t last forever!
So, if you’re ready to take the jump with ExpressVPN, sign up right now!
