Does NordVPN Work With HBO Max? Servers, Setup and Fixes (2026)

Usually, yes. NordVPN streams HBO Max on its US servers: reviews updated this year by Top10VPN (22 October 2026), Security.org (1 October 2026) and Cybernews (25 August 2026) all list HBO Max as working. It isn’t guaranteed, though. HBO Max’s terms forbid “using any technology to mask your location”, and when it spots a VPN it stops you with an “Are you using a VPN?” message, so expect to switch servers now and then.

Below: where HBO Max streams in 2026, which NordVPN servers to use, NordVPN’s own fixes for each HBO Max error, and the limits no VPN gets around, all checked on 22 October 2026. If you’re new to the service, start with what NordVPN is and what it includes.

Does NordVPN Work With HBO Max?

Yes, most of the time. Connect to a NordVPN server in the US and HBO Max sees a US IP address, so it shows the US catalog. It isn’t guaranteed, though, because HBO Max actively looks for VPNs: its help center has a page for the exact message you get when it finds one, and the fix it suggests is to turn the VPN off.

Here’s what three independent reviews updated this year found:

In practice, one of three things happens when you open HBO Max with NordVPN on:

• It plays. You see the catalog of the country you connected to. NordVPN’s streaming feature, SmartPlay, is built into every app and switched on automatically, so there’s nothing to set up.
• “Are you using a VPN?” HBO Max has flagged the address of the server you’re on. NordVPN’s fix is to close HBO Max and connect to a different server in the same country.
• “This is Uncharted Territory” or “Not available in your region yet.” HBO Max thinks you’re somewhere it doesn’t stream, or, in its words, your IP address “might be blocked or is incorrectly identifying your location”.

Where Is HBO Max Available in 2026?

HBO Max’s help center lists more than 120 countries and territories: 38 in Asia Pacific, 46 in Europe and Central Asia, 39 in Latin America and the Caribbean, plus the US and its territories. It still isn’t available in Canada (where HBO’s shows stream on Crave), India, Japan, South Korea or anywhere in Africa.

The map has grown quickly. The service took back the HBO Max name on 9 July 2025, after two years as Max. Warner Bros. Discovery then launched it in Germany, Italy and six other countries on 13 January 2026, and in the UK and Ireland in March 2026. HBO Max says more countries will follow “in 2026 and beyond”.

Watching HBO Max While Traveling

Your account’s Home Country is the country where you signed up, and HBO Max’s rules for travelers are short:

• In a country with HBO Max, you can stream, but you get that country’s catalog, so some titles in Continue Watching or My List may not play.
• In a country without HBO Max, you can’t stream at all. Shows you downloaded before the trip still play; downloads come with the Standard and Premium plans.
• Plan changes only work from the country where you started your subscription.

With NordVPN connected to a server back home, HBO Max sees a home IP address, which is how a US subscriber abroad can get the usual catalog back. It does break HBO Max’s terms, which we cover below. Signing up from abroad is harder still: HBOMax.com only takes US-issued cards that support recurring payments.

How to Watch HBO Max With NordVPN (Step by Step)

1. Get NordVPN. Any plan works, and NordVPN’s Black Friday sale is on now: the 2-year Basic plan costs $3.49 a month ($94.23 for the first 27 months), new customers in the US and 14 other countries can try it free for 7 days, and every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
2. Install the app on the device you watch on, from NordVPN’s download page or your device’s app store.
3. Close HBO Max completely. Quit the browser, or swipe the HBO Max app away, so it doesn’t hold on to your real location.
4. Connect to a server in your account’s country. For a US account, choose the United States and a city near you.
5. Open HBO Max and press play. If you see “Are you using a VPN?”, work through the fixes further down.

Best NordVPN Servers for HBO Max

There’s no special HBO Max server. NordVPN doesn’t name any, and its own advice when one doesn’t work is to “connect to a different server in the same country”. What helps:

• Use a regular US server close to you. NordVPN has about 2,500 servers in 55 US cities, so you can stay near home for speed and still have plenty to switch to.
• Skip the specialty servers. Double VPN routes you through two servers and Onion Over VPN through the Tor network; both are built for privacy, not streaming.
• Consider a dedicated IP if shared servers keep getting flagged. NordVPN’s dedicated IP add-on ($3.69 a month at checkout) gives you a US address in one of 11 cities that no other customer uses. NordVPN pitches it for avoiding blocklists and CAPTCHAs, not specifically for streaming.
• Don’t expect live sports to work on a phone. HBO Max says it needs your device’s location to stream live sports on a phone or tablet, and a VPN changes your IP address, not your GPS position. League blackouts also depend on where HBO Max thinks you are.

HBO Max Not Working With NordVPN? How to Fix It

Start by matching the message on your screen. These come from HBO Max’s own help pages:

NordVPN keeps a troubleshooting article for HBO Max, still titled “Max doesn’t work with NordVPN”. Its steps, in order:

1. Check that NordVPN is really connected. Run NordVPN’s DNS leak test and look for “Connected to NordVPN”. If it isn’t there, restart your device and connect again.
2. Close HBO Max and switch servers. Fully close the browser or the HBO Max app, then connect to a different server in the same country.
3. Turn off location services on your device.
4. Clear HBO Max’s data. In a browser, clear the cache and the cookies for hbomax.com. On Android, open Settings, go to Apps, tap HBO Max, tap Force Stop, then Storage and Clear cache. On an iPhone or iPad, delete and reinstall the HBO Max app.
5. Turn off DNS over HTTPS (called Secure DNS in Chrome and Edge) and any third-party web protection.
6. Pause NordVPN’s own protection. In the desktop app, click the shield icon and choose Pause; on a phone, tap the shield icon and then Turn off protection.
7. Try a browser or another device. If the HBO Max app keeps failing, NordVPN suggests watching in a browser instead (HBO Max supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari), or trying another device on the same network.
8. Ask NordVPN. Its live chat can check your setup.

How to Watch HBO Max With NordVPN on a TV

HBO Max has apps for TVs, streaming players and game consoles, but NordVPN only has apps for some of them. Tap a device for our setup guide:

SmartDNS is the quickest option on a TV without an app. NordVPN’s list of supported services includes “MAX (US region)”: allowlist your home IPv4 address in your Nord Account, activate SmartDNS and enter NordVPN’s DNS addresses on the TV, as our NordVPN SmartDNS guide shows. It doesn’t encrypt anything, and NordVPN warns it may not work with every service, so NordVPN on a router is the sturdier fix.

How Much Does HBO Max Cost in the US?

HBO Max has three US plans. Prices are from HBOMax.com on 22 October 2026 and don’t include tax:

If you travel to countries without HBO Max, Standard or Premium is worth it for the downloads alone, since they play anywhere.

Can HBO Max Ban You for Using NordVPN?

HBO Max’s help pages don’t mention bans: when it detects a VPN, it shows “Are you using a VPN?” and asks you to turn it off. The terms are stricter on paper. Section 5.9 of its US terms (last updated on 9 July 2025) says you are “prohibited from using any technology to mask your location or hinder our ability to determine your location”, and that HBO Max “may use technologies to verify your geographic location”. Section 3.6 lets it suspend or terminate accounts that break the agreement.

One rule a VPN doesn’t change: an HBO Max account is for one household, and HBO Max identifies household devices from account details, network data and device information such as IP addresses.

What’s the Best Alternative to NordVPN for HBO Max?

If NordVPN keeps getting flagged on your device, these two are worth trying. Both come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

1. Surfshark

Surfshark costs less, at $2.49 a month on its 2-year plan ($67.23 for the first 27 months during its Black Friday sale), and it covers unlimited devices. Top10VPN’s Surfshark review, updated on 14 September 2026, also lists HBO Max (US) as working. Its website offers a 7-day free trial on the 12- and 24-month plans. Our Surfshark review has the details.

2. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN’s network is much smaller (200+ servers in 63 countries), but Top10VPN’s review, updated on 19 August 2026, says it reached HBO Max, Peacock, Hulu and Prime Video from its regular US servers in full HD. Our PrivateVPN review covers its prices and apps.

The Bottom Line

NordVPN is the VPN I’d use for HBO Max: the three 2026 reviews we checked all report HBO Max working, and its roughly 2,500 US servers give you plenty to switch to when HBO Max flags one. Install the app, connect to a US city near you, and if you see “Are you using a VPN?”, close HBO Max and change servers. Just go in knowing that HBO Max’s terms forbid it, and that no VPN moves your phone’s location for live sports.
