In this NordVPN vs. AVG VPN comparison guide, I’ll compare both VPNs side by side and let you know their pros and cons.
Ok, let’s dive in!
NordVPN or AVG Secure VPN?
NordVPN uses 256-bit encryption and leading security protocols on more than 5,500 servers and compared to AVG Secure it’s cheaper.
AVG VPN offers strong 256-bit encryption and access to 50 server locations, but has fewer security features than NordVPN.

Privacy & Jurisdiction
If you are looking to stay safe from prying eyes online, then anonymity should be the first aspect you consider.
So are NordVPN and AVG Secure safe?
Let’s start with NordVPN.
NordVPN Logging Policy
This provider is based in Panama, which is an non-14 eyes jurisdiction and one of the most privacy-friendly countries in the world.
Following a March 2018 breach in one of their data centers in Finland, NordVPN responded by authorizing an independent audit of its no-logs policy.
The industry-first audit was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and involved reviewing Nord’s servers and code as well as interviewing employees.
When the audit report was finally released, it backed up NordVPN’s claims that they don’t log identifiable user information.
AVG Secure VPN Logging Practices
AVG Secure, on the other hand, has some alarming privacy issues.
Although the provider does not log your browsing activities, they do collect personally identifiable data such as:
- Name & Email address
- Payment card number
- IP address
While this is quite concerning, if you live in Russia, then you have even more to worry about.
Security & Encryption
In regards to security, both providers perform admirably.
They feature military-grade AES 256-bit encryption, which is the gold standard in the VPN industry.
AVG has minimal options when it comes to VPN protocols.
They only offer OpenVPN UDP, which leaves OpenVPN TCP users in the cold.
While UDP is fast, TCP provides more stable connections and is the best option for bypassing restrictive firewalls.
NordVPN is more versatile as it supports both IKEv2/IPsec and OpenVPN UDP/TCP.
Additionally, the service uses the TLS v1.2 protocol on its browser extensions.
Extra Security Features
NordVPN and AVG Secure offer exciting security features, but yet again, NordVPN outperforms AVG Secure.
The top feature offered by both providers is the internet kill switch, which automatically terminates your internet access when the VPN connection drops.
The two VPNs also come with DNS/IPv6 leak protection.
NordVPN additionally offers the following features:
- CyberSec – Ad and Malware blocker that not only improves your security but also speeds up your browsing experience.
- Double VPN – sends your internet traffic through two servers, encrypting it twice.
- Onion over VPN – adds extra protection by routing your traffic through the Onion network.
But that’s not all!
NordVPN’s Linux users also get to enjoy the new and exciting NordLynx feature.
Designed around the lightning-fast WireGuard protocol, NordLynx fixes the protocol’s privacy loopholes allowing you to enjoy some of the fastest VPN connections available.
As mentioned earlier, both NordVPN and AVG Secure deliver secure server connections. I did not find any IP, DNS, or WebRTC Leaks.
Here are the snapshots:
NordVPN Leak Test (Zero Leaks)
AVG Secure VPN Leak Test (Zero Leaks)
Speed & Performance
|Provider||Avg. Ping||Avg. Download Speed||Avg. Upload Speed|
|NordVPN||94 ms||81.63 Mbps||29.71 Mbps|
|AVG Secure||178 ms||51.92 Mbps||19.46 Mbps|
Speed is necessary when comparing VPNs. Even more important than any given server speed, is the stability of a VPN connection.
NordVPN Speed Results
All through, NordVPN demonstrated incredible connection speeds with little to zero instability. I tested numerous servers, and on average, got around 81% of my baseline internet connection.
Here are the speed tests I ran with NordVPN servers in the US, UK, and Australia.
Note: When conducting the tests, my benchmark speed was 96.31 Mbps download and 44.27 Mbps upload.
|Connected to UK server||34 ms||88.67 Mbps (-7.93%)||32.59 Mbps (-26.38%)|
|Connected to US server||89 ms||81.09 Mbps (-15.79%)||28.74 Mbps (-35.08%)|
|Connected to Australia server||201 ms||74.82 Mbps (-21.49%)||18.62 Mbps (-57.94%)|
AVG Secure VPN Speed Results
AVG Secure couldn’t really match NordVPN.
Their average server speeds are much slower, but I was impressed by their UK Wonderland streaming server, which posted speeds of up to 92 Mbps.
Below are the average AVG Secure VPN speeds in the UK, US, and Australia.
|Connected to UK server||78 ms||74.66 Mbps (-22.48%)||39.16 Mbps (-31.87%)|
|Connected to US server||198 ms||52.67 Mbps (-45.31%)||22.81 Mbps (-48.47%)|
|Connected to Australia server||302 ms||45.09 Mbps (-53.30%)||19.79 Mbps (-55.29%)|
Countries & Servers
AVG Secure offers just 56 servers. On the other hand, NordVPN has one of the largest server networks in the VPN industry.
Currently, they provide an incredible 5500 plus servers.
And as I’ve stated in my previous NordVPN vs VyprVPN comparison, it really increases the chances of finding speedy servers.
To put it in perspective, that’s 150 times more than AVG Secure.
However, despite the measly amount of servers, AVG’s total number of servers isn’t that terrible. With the VPN, you can access servers in 36 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific.
While AVG Secure’s wide server distribution, its low number of servers remains a significant disadvantage. As more users connect to service, servers can quickly become overloaded leading to high latency, low-speed connections.
NordVPN offers not only more servers but also more server locations.
The VPN also comes with specialty servers, including Dedicated IP, Tor over VPN, and Smart DNS servers.
Which Provider Is Better for Australia?
Both AVG Secure and NordVPN have servers in Australia.
However, AVG Secure has only a single server location (Melbourne), NordVPN has servers in 5 cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Melbourne.
As for the total number of Australian servers, NordVPN has 200-plus, which includes both streaming and P2P optimized servers.
On top of their limited server coverage in Australia, AVG Secure does not have any specialty servers in the country.
NordVPN is really affordable.
The provider offers four different subscription plans to choose from, including a long term-term 36-month plan and a short-term 1 month plan.
NordVPN Subscribtion Plans
- $11.95 billed every month
- $83.88 billed 12 months
- $125.64 billed every 36 months
- $119.76 billed every 24 months
AVG Secure, on the other hand, does not have a month-to-month plan and current subscription options are 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year plans.
AVG Secure VPN Subscription Plans
- $47.88 now for the first year
- $179.99 billed now for the first two years
- $269.99 billed every 3 years
NordVPN and AVG Secure support all the major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
NordVPN additionally accepts cryptocurrencies, Amazon Pay, Alipay, and WeChat Payments. However, unlike AVG Secure, the provider does not support PayPal.
Free Trials & Money-Back Policy
Does NordVPN offer a free trial? What about AVG Secure VPN?
Nord does not provide a free trial, but AVG does.
The provider offers two different types of free trials, a 7-day free trial and a 60-day free trial.
The 1-week free trial is easy to obtain and all you have to do is download the desktop app. You don’t even need to create an account and or enter your credit card details.
The 60-day free trial, on the other hand, requires you to create an account and provide your payment details. It offers all AVG VPN premium features including support for 5 simultaneous connections.
Free trials aside, both providers have a strict 30-day money-back guarantee policies that cover all their subscription plans.
Do They Offer Discounts Often?
Discounts are not AVG’s strong suit, but Nord does offer a couple every now and then.
The best time to look out for a discount is on Black Friday, but they do also offer several other promotions during the year.
NordVPN and AVG Secure are excellent at bypassing geo-restrictions.
Both VPNs offer dedicated servers for streaming, and I had no trouble accessing Netflix, BBC iPlayer, or any other streaming service.
Netflix remains one of the toughest services to unblock, and so I was pleasantly surprised to see both VPNs work smoothly.
That’s good. But there is more to this category than just unblocking Netflix.
To enjoy a great streaming experience, you’ll need a fast enough connection.
As highlighted above, NordVPN has the upper hand when it comes to speed.
The provider also works with more streaming devices than AVG Secure, but more on that later.
Besides fast connection speeds and reliable geo-unblocking capabilities, NordVPN also offers SmartPlay, a Smart DNS service.
Smart DNS allows you to stream geo-restricted with little to zero impact on your baseline speed. But while great for streaming, Smart DNS is unencrypted, and as a result, your online connections aren’t secured.
Smart DNS services can be quite challenging to set up, especially for beginners.
Enter NordVPN’s SmartPlay feature. It runs automatically and is both fast and anonymous.
Not all VPNs support torrenting.
Luckily, NordVPN and AVG Secure do not limit P2P connections in any way.
Again, both providers offer P2P optimized servers making it easier to find the perfect servers for torrenting.
AVG Secure and NordVPN both offer unlimited bandwidth on all their servers, which means you can download as much content as you like.
Privacy wise, both providers do not monitor or store your activity logs.
AVG Secure is compatible with and has native apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. If you are a Linux user or a looking to cover your smart TV, then you should look towards NordVPN.
NordVPN supports a broader array of devices, including Linux, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and routers. The provider also has browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox.
So how many simultaneous connections does AVG Secure VPN support?
It depends on your license.
AVG Secure VPN Multi-Device allows up to 5 devices at a time while the standard AVG Secure supports only 1 device at a time.
NordVPN allows 6 simultaneous connections across all their subscription plans.
When it comes to customer support, response times should be your first consideration.
In this regard, NordVPN and AVG Secure were reliable as they both offer 24/7 live chat support.
Nord’s customer support reps were professional, and their answers were helpful and straight to the point.
|Searchable Knowledge Base||Yes||Yes|
AVG’s customer reps were equally friendly and professional.
However, their live chat support is not immediately available.
To get technical support via the live chat, you will need to go through sales support.
The sales team will then direct you to a technician, usually within 3 minutes.
Besides live chat support, you can also contact both customer reps via email and support tickets. The providers also offer a searchable knowledge base section and an FAQ section.
Additionally, AVG Secure provides phone support and has a nice support community where you can interact with fellow users and share tips and solutions.
Do They Offer Video Tutorials?
If you need more hand-holding with installations, then NordVPN is the best option. The provider has numerous video tutorials available on their website and YouTube channel.
User Experience & Usability
NordVPN and AVG Secure are two very easy to use VPNs.
Both have user-friendly apps that allow you to establish connections with a single click.
AVG Secure VPN Interface
AVG Secure’s desktop app takes a minimalist approach.
It automatically detects the best server and connects automatically.
However, unlike NordVPN, their servers cannot be accessed directly from the main page.
Still, switching servers is not complicated and can be done quickly by clicking on “change location”. I was impressed by how accessible the individual servers are.
All servers are organized into regions, and their specialty servers – P2P and streaming – are grouped separately, making it easier for you to access them.
NordVPN apps are well-designed, and the desktop client allows you to both connect and switch servers without having to leave the main screen.
Servers are organized in alphabetical order, and you can either choose from the list or an interactive map. Similarly to AVG Secure, NordVPN also groups their specialty servers are grouped separately.
Both VPNs offer the ability to tweak settings such as activating the kill switch and whether or not to automatically start the VPN on startup.
The Overall Winner
The clear winner in this comparison is NordVPN.
The service delivered the best connections speeds and is also the best option in security and global server coverage.
NordVPN offers the lowest price and considering its incredible feature suite, provides the best value for money – you can find more in-depth review here: https://vpnalert.com/best-virtual-private-network/reviews/nordvpn/.
As it is, AVG Secure simply can’t compete with Nord’s Double VPN, Tor over VPN, and Smart DNS capabilities.
Both providers worked well with Netflix and BitTorrent, but yet again, NordVPN was the better performer due to its superior speeds.
Protect private web traffic from snooping, interference, and censorship. All plans are covered by a no-hassle 100% money-back guarantee for your first 30 days of service.
