The original Omegle shut down in November 2023, so I can no longer give you a direct “yes”: the site I tested is gone. Its users moved to sites built on the same idea, such as OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, and Monkey.
While Omegle was still running, PrivateVPN DID work with it, but I had to sift through a few servers before I found one that hadn’t been blocked.

These are the steps I took:

- With my second attempt, I used a South African server. This time I received a full-on “BANNED” pop-up:
- But – third time lucky! On my third attempt, I chose the Switzerland-Zurich server. And it worked!
My experience was a perfect example of how using a VPN for Omegle was a “hit or a miss” situation.
You were either going to find a server that granted access, or you weren’t!
Once I was in and my VPN was working, I felt safe on the chat platform knowing that I had additional security in place.

You may also find that a certain server works one day, but not the next.

Switching to your phone’s hotspot changes your real IP address, which helps if a ban was tied to it, so it’s worth a try on OmeTV too.

When Does an Omegle Ban End?
The original Omegle’s bans don’t matter any more, because the site shut down in November 2023.
While it was running, Omegle bans varied in length, so it was hard to tell. After a bit of research, I found that the average Omegle ban length was anywhere from 7 days to 4 months.
An Omegle ban could also be permanent, but only when behavior was severe (nudity, spam, racism – that sort of thing).

Why Is Omegle Not Working With a VPN?
The original Omegle isn’t working with a VPN, or without one, because that site no longer exists.
When it was running, Omegle knew that VPNs were used to bypass bans, so it blocked VPN addresses from using its service.
That’s why older servers didn’t pair well with Omegle and simply wouldn’t work (you’d receive an “error” message).
Recent servers, on the other hand, were less likely to have been added to Omegle’s “blocklist”, and that’s why they worked.
OmeTV and the other replacements work the same way, so the trick still applies: try new VPN servers until you find the right “key” that fits the “lock” – get what I’m saying?
Which Countries Block Omegle?
The original Omegle is gone. While it was running, any country that blocked chat platforms such as WhatsApp and Zoom generally blocked Omegle too.
Why?
Because these platforms can’t be as easily monitored by the government.
Examples of countries that blocked Omegle include China, the UAE, Libya, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar.
The sites that replaced it are blocked in some countries too, and you can still use a VPN to bypass that kind of censorship.
Can You Get a Virus From Omegle?
Not from the original Omegle any more, and never from the site itself.
However, you could get a virus from opening a link that was shared on Omegle, and that’s still true on OmeTV, Chatroulette, and the rest.
These chat sites can be hotspots for phishing scams, and if you do end up clicking on a suspicious link, then a virus is a possibility.
So, while the chat sites themselves can’t infect your devices, user activity can.
A VPN hides your IP address, but it won’t stop a malicious download, so don’t open links from strangers.
How Does Omegle Block VPNs?
Omegle blocked VPNs by IP address. It recognized addresses belonging to VPN servers, especially busy ones that many users shared, and refused connections from them. OmeTV and the other replacements do the same.
VPNs such as PrivateVPN also offer obfuscation, which makes VPN traffic look like ordinary browsing. That helps on networks that block VPNs, such as school and office Wi-Fi. Against a chat site’s own blocklist, what works is a fresh address, from a different server or a dynamic dedicated IP.
