The original Omegle closed its doors in November 2023, but the people who used to spend their evenings on it didn’t stop video chatting with strangers. They moved to sites built on the same idea, such as OmeTV, Emerald Chat, Chatroulette, and Monkey, and those sites inherited every problem Omegle had: IP bans handed out on a whim, strangers who can trace where you are, and school or office networks that block the lot.
In 2026 a different company relaunched the omegle.com address as a new, 18+ video-chat service with age verification. The same VPN routine applies there too.
NordVPN is the VPN I now recommend for those Omegle alternatives. Its 7,000+ servers turn a post-ban IP change into a two-second job, its obfuscated servers get the sites open on restricted networks, and NordLynx posted the fastest speeds in my tests for a clean video feed.
If not NordVPN, try Surfshark for unlimited simultaneous connections, PureVPN for a dedicated IP address that nobody else can get banned, CyberGhost for the biggest pool of servers to hop between, and PrivateVPN for its Stealth Mode obfuscation.
Further down, I cover the setup step by step and the fixes for when one of these sites refuses to load over a VPN.
Top 3 VPNs for Omegle
Surfshark
Best for sharing one plan
- Unlimited simultaneous connections
- Fresh IP on every server switch
- Camouflage Mode for blocked networks
NordVPN
Best for beating IP bans
- 7,000+ servers in 150 countries
- Obfuscated servers for blocked networks
- Fastest speeds in my tests
PureVPN
Best for a private IP address
- 6,000+ servers in 65+ countries
- Optional dedicated IP add-on
- Chrome and Firefox extensions
Omegle’s replacements picked up its habits. OmeTV bans IP addresses quickly enough that I keep a separate guide on getting unbanned from OmeTV, Chatroulette and Emerald Chat moderate the same way, and all of them are blocked on most school and workplace networks.
Then there’s the privacy side. The stranger on the other end of a WebRTC video call can pull your IP address with a free lookup tool, and your ISP logs every session. A VPN puts a server’s address in front of yours for both problems, and the five below are the ones I trust to do that on today’s random video chat sites.
Chat Endlessly & Dodge Omegle Bans With My Top Omegle VPNs
Here’s the short version of what each VPN does best on Omegle’s successors:
- NordVPN: Best Overall VPN for Omegle Alternatives
- Surfshark: Unlimited Devices for Random Video Chat Sites
- PureVPN: Dedicated IP Addresses for Omegle Alternatives
- CyberGhost: Biggest Server Pool for Omegle Alternatives
- PrivateVPN: Stealth Mode to Unblock Chat Sites on Restricted Networks
I recorded download and upload speeds on a 100 Mbps connection for every VPN here except CyberGhost, which I haven’t speed-tested for this page.
Best VPNs for Omegle: Comparisons and Detailed Review
I put 25+ VPN providers through the things that matter on random video chat sites: how quickly you can move to a clean IP address after a ban, server catalog, availability of dedicated IP addresses, obfuscation for filtered networks, privacy, connection speeds, and device compatibility.
NordVPN - Best Overall VPN for Omegle Alternatives
| Location | Server Network | Dedicated IP Addresses | Average Speeds | Best Deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panama | 7,000+ in 150 countries | Available | 94 Mbps | Show Offer |
NordVPN takes the top spot because it deals with the three things that go wrong on OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, and Monkey: IP bans, blocked networks, and choppy video. In my Ome TV roundup, it connected me to a US stranger on the first attempt, which is the kind of reliability I want before I recommend anything for video chat.
Its 7,000+ servers in 150 countries are the ban cure. A random chat site can only block the IP address it sees, and that address belongs to the server, not to you. Disconnect, pick another city, and you’re back with a clean address while the ban sits uselessly on the old one. With a network this size, you’ll run out of patience long before NordVPN runs out of addresses.
If you’d rather not gamble on shared addresses at all, NordVPN sells dedicated IP addresses as an add-on. Nobody else uses that address, so nobody else can get it banned for you.
Speed is where NordVPN pulled ahead of everything else on this list. Over its NordLynx protocol, I measured 94 Mbps download and 42 Mbps upload on my 100 Mbps line, and upload is the number that matters here because it carries your webcam feed to the stranger.
For school and office Wi-Fi that blocks chat sites outright, switch to its obfuscated servers, which run on OpenVPN. They disguise VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS, so the network’s filter has nothing to catch.
Every server wraps your session in AES 256-bit encryption, and the kill switch cuts your internet if the tunnel drops, so a stranger running an IP lookup mid-chat only ever sees the server’s address. Double VPN adds a second hop if you want extra distance between you and the site, and Threat Protection blocks the malicious links people paste into text chats (the Pro version, on the higher-tier plans, also scans downloads).
I also like that the app can auto-connect on unknown Wi-Fi networks, which covers the café or library scenario where you’d otherwise forget to switch it on.
NordVPN has apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge if you only want the chat tab going through the VPN. One subscription covers ten devices, and the company is based in Panama, outside every intelligence-sharing alliance.

- 94 Mbps download and 42 Mbps upload via NordLynx for smooth webcam video
- Obfuscated servers get chat sites open on school and work networks
- AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, Double VPN, and Threat Protection
- Dedicated IP addresses available as an add-on
- Ten simultaneous connections
Cons
- Obfuscated servers require the slower OpenVPN protocol
- Long-term plans cost more than Surfshark’s
Surfshark - Unlimited Devices for Random Video Chat Sites
| Location | Server Network | Dedicated IP Addresses | Average Speeds | Best Deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Netherlands | 4500+ in 100 countries | Available | 89 Mbps | Show Offer |
Surfshark is the VPN I’d hand to a household, a dorm, or a group of friends who all want onto OmeTV and Chatroulette, because it doesn’t count devices. One plan, unlimited simultaneous connections, and nobody has to log someone else out first.
Bans are handled the same way as with NordVPN. Each of its 4,500+ servers in 100 countries carries its own pool of IP addresses, so when a chat site blocks the one you’re on, a hop to another location hands you a fresh one. I have a separate walkthrough for Surfshark on Ome TV if you want the exact clicks.
Two features cover restricted networks. Camouflage Mode hides the fact that you’re using a VPN whenever you connect over OpenVPN, and NoBorders switches itself on when Surfshark notices that the network is filtering traffic, which is exactly what a school firewall does to chat sites.
Over WireGuard, Surfshark averaged 89 Mbps download on my 100 Mbps connection. That’s slower than NordVPN and PureVPN in my tests, though a 720p webcam feed uses a fraction of it, and I never saw a frozen frame.
CleanWeb strips ads, trackers, and malicious domains before they load. On chat sites that make their money from ad overlays, and where strangers paste links into the text box, that’s more useful than it sounds.
The kill switch is there for the moment the tunnel drops mid-call, so your real address never reaches the stranger’s screen, and AES 256-bit encryption keeps your ISP and the network admin out of the session.
Surfshark also sells a static dedicated IP as a paid add-on if you want an address nobody else can get banned.
Its home is the Netherlands, a Nine Eyes country, and it has no Double VPN option, which is why NordVPN stays ahead of it on privacy. For putting one plan on every device in the house, though, nothing else here comes close.
Apps cover Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux, with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge extensions on top.

PureVPN - Dedicated IP Addresses for Omegle Alternatives
| Location | Server Network | Dedicated IP Addresses | Average Speeds | Best Deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The British Virgin Islands | 6000+ in 65+ countries | Available | 90 Mbps | Show Offer |
PureVPN used to be my go-to for getting around Omegle’s bans, and the same toolkit carries over to OmeTV, Chatroulette, and the rest.
It features 6,000+ servers in 65+ countries. Back when Omegle was live, its Singapore server was the one that reliably got me a working session; today, the point is simply that you have dozens of countries to hop between when a chat site bans the address you’re on.
I could video chat without any loading times, thanks to PureVPN’s WireGuard protocol, which gave me 90 Mbps download and 34 Mbps upload.
Random chat sites ban shared IP addresses first because thousands of people cycle through them. PureVPN’s paid dedicated IP add-on gives you an address of your own, so the only person who can get it banned is you.
Incognito mode hides nothing from a chat site, which still sees your real IP address; PureVPN’s 256-bit encryption and IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak protection make sure it sees the server’s instead. Switch on the kill switch as well so a dropped tunnel doesn’t expose you mid-call.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, and its Chrome and Firefox extensions are handy if you only want the browser tab with the chat site going through the VPN.
You can install it on ten simultaneous devices, the same as NordVPN; only Surfshark offers more.

Pros
- 6,000+ servers in 65+ countries to swap IP addresses after a ban
- No loading times on video chat, thanks to the speedy WireGuard protocol
- 256-bit encryption with a kill switch and IP/DNS/WebRTC leak protection
- Dedicated IP add-on for an address nobody else can get banned
Cons
- Dedicated IP addresses cost extra
- Fewer countries than NordVPN and Surfshark
CyberGhost - Biggest Server Pool for Omegle Alternatives
| Location | Server Network | Dedicated IP Addresses | Average Speeds | Best Deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Romania | 9000+ in 100 countries | Available | Not tested here | Show Offer |
CyberGhost brings the biggest pool of servers on this list to the ban-and-switch routine: 9,000+ servers in 100 countries, spread across 125 cities.
When OmeTV or Chatroulette blocks the address you’re on, that pool means another server is always a click away, and the country you pick decides which nationality the site thinks you are.
For sites that block shared addresses in bulk, the dedicated IP add-on is the cleaner fix. It costs $5 a month, or $2.50 a month alongside the 2-year plan, and hands you an address only you use; up to seven devices can share it, but only inside CyberGhost’s apps, not on a router.
Seven is also the device limit for the subscription itself, the lowest allowance of the five, so a busy household is better served by Surfshark.
The apps cover Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, and Linux gets a command-line setup rather than an app.
If you only ever chat in the browser, CyberGhost also offers free proxy extensions for Chrome and Firefox. They change the IP address the site sees in four locations (the US, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania), but they leave the rest of your device’s traffic alone.
Refunds are generous: the 6-month and 2-year plans give you 45 days to ask for your money back, while the monthly plan gives you 14. The 2-year plan works out to $2.19 a month ($56.94 for the first 26 months).
I haven’t put CyberGhost through my 100 Mbps video chat test for this page, which is why its speed is marked as untested above.
Try CyberGhost with this deal and use the 45-day guarantee to check it against the chat sites you actually use.
Pros
- 9,000+ servers in 100 countries, the biggest pool on this list
- Dedicated IP add-on for an address nobody else can get banned
- Free Chrome and Firefox proxy extensions for browser-only chatting
- 45-day money-back guarantee on 6-month and 2-year plans
Cons
- Seven devices, the fewest on this list
- The monthly plan only gets a 14-day refund window
PrivateVPN - Stealth Mode to Unblock Chat Sites on Restricted Networks
| Location | Server Network | Dedicated IP Addresses | Average Speeds | Best Deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweden | 200+ in 63 countries | Available | 83 Mbps | Show Offer |
PrivateVPN has the smallest network here, at 200+ servers in 63 countries, but it’s the one I’d pick when the chat sites are blocked by the network you’re sitting on rather than by a ban.
That’s down to its Stealth Mode obfuscation, which makes VPN traffic look like ordinary browsing. A school or workplace firewall that blocks OmeTV and Chatroulette usually blocks recognisable VPN traffic too, and Stealth Mode slips past both.
PrivateVPN gives you a static shared IP address on every location, so you keep the same address each time you reconnect to a city, which some sites treat as less suspicious than an address that changes by the hour. If that address ever gets banned, a different location gets you a new one, and on selected locations it also runs dynamic dedicated IP servers over OpenVPN that hand you an address no one else is using at that moment.
My 83 Mbps download and 28 Mbps upload came over OpenVPN. PrivateVPN has since added WireGuard to its protocol list, which should narrow the gap to the WireGuard-based providers above, though I haven’t re-run the numbers.
It also excels in security, with 256-bit encryption, IPv6 leak protection, and a VPN kill switch, so a dropped connection never exposes your real address to a stranger.
You can chat on up to ten simultaneous devices with a PrivateVPN subscription. The provider features intuitive apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, but no browser extensions.

How to Use Omegle With a VPN?
The original Omegle is gone, but the routine for its replacements is the one I used to recommend for it: install the VPN, switch on the kill switch, and only then open the chat site.
Here’s how it goes with NordVPN, my top pick:
- Get a NordVPN subscription and download the app for your device.
- Launch the app and log in with your credentials.
- Turn on the kill switch under Settings > Kill Switch, so a dropped connection can’t leak your real IP address to the stranger on the other end.
- Connect to a server. Quick Connect picks the fastest one nearby; choose a specific country if you want the site to pair you with strangers from there, or an obfuscated server if you’re on a network that blocks chat sites.
- Open OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, or Monkey and start chatting. If the site says you’re banned, disconnect, pick another server, and reload the page.
Omegle Not Working With a VPN? 6 Easy Fixes
I wrote these fixes for Omegle, and they work just as well on the sites that replaced it, because they detect VPNs and enforce bans in the same ways:
- Clear browser cookies: OmeTV and Chatroulette can recognise a banned browser through its cookies even after your IP address changes, so a ban that survives a server switch usually lives in a cookie. Clear them, or open a private window, before you reconnect.
- Switch server locations: A shared VPN address that thousands of people have used is often already on a chat site’s blocklist. Changing servers gives you a different address, and with NordVPN or Surfshark you have thousands to pick from.
- Change VPN protocols: Some network filters throttle or block particular protocols. If a site won’t load over NordLynx or WireGuard, try OpenVPN TCP, which looks more like ordinary web traffic, or NordVPN’s obfuscated servers.
- Reinstall/update the VPN app: Make sure you’re on the latest version of the app. If you are, a clean reinstall clears the corrupted settings that occasionally break connections.
- Flush your DNS: Flushing the DNS cache clears stale records that can point your browser at an old address and trigger a “connecting to server” error on some chat sites.
- Contact customer support: If nothing helps, the VPN’s live chat can tell you which servers currently work with a given site. NordVPN and Surfshark both run 24/7 chat support.
FAQs
Can You Get Banned From Omegle for Using a VPN?
Not on the original Omegle, which shut down in November 2023. The question still matters on the sites that replaced it, such as OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, and Monkey, which ban by IP address in much the same way.
If you connect through a VPN server whose IP address earlier users have abused, the site can block that address. The ban sticks to the server, not to you, so switching to another server hands you a clean IP address straight away.
Can You Use a Free VPN With Omegle?
The original Omegle is gone, so the practical question is whether a free VPN works on its replacements, and in my experience it rarely does. Free services hand out a handful of shared IP addresses that OmeTV and Chatroulette have usually blocked already, and their data caps run out quickly once video is involved.
The one genuinely free plan I would put a name to is Proton VPN’s: one device, unlimited data, no card, but the server is picked for you from ten countries, so you can’t choose where the site thinks you are. For random video chat, I would rather use NordVPN and lean on its 30-day money-back guarantee if it doesn’t suit you.
Break Free of the Omegle Ban With a VPN!
Omegle may be history, but the sites that took its place still ban on sight, still get blocked on school networks, and still show strangers more about you than they should.
NordVPN is my answer to all three: thousands of servers to swap after a ban, obfuscated servers for filtered networks, and the fastest video feed I measured.
Try it on OmeTV, Chatroulette, Emerald Chat, or Monkey with this NordVPN deal, and claim a refund within 30 days if it isn’t for you.
