Background

Where Gemini is restricted, and why

Google decides where Gemini is offered, and it publishes the lists. The Gemini web app is available in more than 230 countries and territories, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, while mainland China appears only for Workspace accounts. The mobile app reaches more than 150 countries, again with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Russia, Belarus and Iran are on neither list, so there the restriction is Google’s own.

Google’s developer tools draw the line differently. Its list for Google AI Studio and the Gemini API, last updated in April 2026, leaves out mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Belarus and Iran, so Hong Kong and Macau get the Gemini apps but not the tools developers use to build on Gemini.

In mainland China, Gemini also runs into the country’s long-standing block on Google’s services. GreatFire, which tests websites from inside the mainland, has recorded interference with gemini.google.com since June 2024 and found it blocked in every test in the three months to October 2026.

Gemini’s reach has grown in steps Google chose. It began as Bard, which opened in the US and UK in March 2023 and reached Brazil and Europe only in July 2023, and it was renamed Gemini in February 2024, when Gemini Advanced launched in more than 150 countries and territories.

Method

How we test

  • Test machines on the two biggest home-internet providers in most countries open the homepage every day.
  • A failure counts only when it happens twice on the same network, while the site opens from other countries.
  • A change is published only after re-checks a few hours later and again the next day, on several machines per provider, confirm it. It’s dated from the first sighting.
  • Test machines caught getting around blocks, through a VPN or a filter-dodging tool, are set aside.
  • We test websites, mostly over home broadband. Apps, calls and mobile networks can behave differently.

Is Gemini Available in China?

Not for ordinary users. Google lists mainland China for Workspace accounts only, and China’s censors block Google’s services: GreatFire’s tests from inside the mainland found gemini.google.com blocked in every test in the three months to October 2026. Google’s developer tools for Gemini aren’t offered there at all.

Can I Use Gemini in Hong Kong?

Yes. Google lists Hong Kong and Macau for both the Gemini web app and the mobile app. They’re left out of Google AI Studio and the Gemini API, the tools developers use, which Google doesn’t offer in mainland China, Russia, Belarus or Iran either.

Why Isn’t Gemini Available in Russia?

Because Google doesn’t offer it there. Russia isn’t among the countries Google lists for the Gemini web app, the mobile app or the Gemini API, and neither are Belarus and Iran. Google doesn’t give a reason on those pages, but the restriction is the company’s own.
