Censorship Monitor · China Last test
Yes. Discord is blocked in mainland China, and it doesn’t work on Chinese internet connections without a VPN. Hong Kong isn’t affected.
Today’s test · discord.com
Blocked
discord.com fails to open on China Unicom and China Mobile, twice, while it opens from other countries.
The official status
Discord’s website and app are blocked by China’s internet censors. No order or official explanation has been published, and reports that date the block to 2018 couldn’t be confirmed.
Independent tests from inside China still found discord.com blocked in September 2026, which matches our own daily test.
Hong Kong is outside the mainland’s censorship system, so the block doesn’t apply there.
KOOK (formerly Kaiheila), a Chinese app for voice, text and video chat, and WeChat.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on Discord in China no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
Only government-approved VPNs are legal in China, and most foreign VPNs are blocked.
