China has blocked Reddit since August 2018, and Iran has blocked it too. Russia and Turkey blocked it briefly in 2015 and Nepal in 2025, while Indonesia lifted an 11-year block in July 2026.
Every day we open Reddit from inside 24 countries, mostly over home broadband, and record where it’s blocked, since when and how.
Blocked in China and Iran. 24 of 24 results confirmed in the last 48 hours.
Country by country
Blocked means the networks we test there failed to open www.reddit.com, twice, while it opened elsewhere. “Turned away by the site” means Reddit itself refused visitors from that country.

Background
Reddit tends to get blocked over a sliver of its content. In August 2015 Roskomnadzor blacklisted a single thread on growing hallucinogenic mushrooms at the request of Russia’s drug control service. Because Reddit is encrypted, many providers could block that page only by cutting off the whole site, until Reddit hid the thread from Russian users the next day. Turkey blocked Reddit for three days in November 2015 over obscenity.
Reddit’s own answer is to restrict content country by country. In 2015 it said it reserves the right to do so when an authorised body makes a valid request, and in 2016 it complied with all six Turkish government requests, hiding one post and five subreddits from Turkish users; researchers found some were LGBTI-friendly forums. Indonesia lifted its block in July 2026 after Reddit agreed to geoblock content Indonesian law treats as illegal, mostly gambling and pornography.
China and Iran block Reddit along with most big foreign platforms. China’s block began in August 2018, when the site and app stopped loading without explanation, and independent tests in September and October 2026 found reddit.com blocked on most Iranian networks. Russia has also blocked Reddit by mistake: in March 2021, filtering aimed at Twitter’s t.co link shortener caught every address containing “t.co”, reddit.com included.
In September 2025 Nepal’s telecoms authority put Reddit on a list of 26 unregistered platforms to block, and the government lifted the ban days later, after 19 people were killed in protests. Since 10 December 2025 Australia’s under-16 social media law has required Reddit to keep younger Australians off the site. Reddit, which says it is mainly a forum for adults, said it would comply while it challenged the law in the High Court.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a local block on Reddit no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic.

Yes. Since 10 December 2025 Reddit has been one of the platforms that must stop Australians under 16 from having accounts, and serious breaches can cost up to 49.5 million Australian dollars. Reddit says it is mainly a forum for adults, and in December 2025 it said it would comply while challenging the law in the High Court.
