Governments that block Discord object to what users share on it: Iran has since April 2024, Russia and Turkey since October 2024, and China without ever publishing an order. Egypt and the Philippines cut it off briefly in 2026.
Every day we open Discord from inside 24 countries, mostly over home broadband, and record where it’s blocked, since when and how.
Blocked in China, Iran, Turkey and Russia. 24 of 24 results confirmed in the last 48 hours.
Country by country
Blocked means the networks we test there failed to open discord.com, twice, while it opened elsewhere. “Turned away by the site” means Discord itself refused visitors from that country.

Background
Governments that block Discord point to what happens on its servers. Iran’s Prosecutor General ordered it filtered in April 2024, citing the free posting of “immoral” content. Russia’s Roskomnadzor blocked it on 8 October 2024, saying it was used for terrorism, extremism, recruitment and drug sales and hadn’t removed banned posts. A day later Turkey blocked it too, under an Ankara court order over suspected child sexual abuse and obscenity, and its transport minister said Discord refused to share users’ IP addresses with security units.
China and Egypt never announced their blocks of Discord. China has blocked it without publishing any order or reason, and independent tests still found discord.com blocked there in October 2026. Egypt never acknowledged the two days in January 2026 when Discord stopped working on the WE and Vodafone networks; an investigation by Al Manassa and the digital rights group Masaar found connections cut whenever Discord’s name appeared in the connection request.
Some limits come from Discord itself. Its terms of service say people located in a country or region under US or EU embargo may not download or use it, and name Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and Crimea. That is Discord’s own rule, separate from any government block, so in Iran both the state’s filter and Discord’s terms stand in the way.
Pressure on Discord has kept growing since 2025. It was fined again in Russia in February 2025 for not storing Russian users’ data there. In June 2026 Turkey’s transport minister said it had largely met the country’s content demands and would probably reopen, without giving a date. In August 2026 Brazil’s data protection authority ordered it to suspend livestreaming in the country over risks to children, and in September the Philippines blocked it for a few hours after it missed a deadline to set up a local presence.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a local block on Discord no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic.

Iran’s Prosecutor General’s office ordered it filtered in April 2024, citing the free posting of “immoral” content after videos spread in some groups; some suspected its use for organising protests was the real reason. Iran had blocked Discord before, including for about three months in late 2022.
