Blocked on some networks
Jio blocks www.tiktok.com, while Airtel lets it through.
The official status
On 29 June 2020 India’s IT ministry blocked TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps under Section 69A of the IT Act, saying they threatened India’s sovereignty, defence, security and public order. The government kept the ban in January 2021.
In August 2025 the TikTok website briefly loaded for some users. The government said it had issued no unblocking order, and TikTok said it hadn’t restored access in India. In September 2025 the IT minister said there was “absolutely no proposal” to bring TikTok back.
Indian internet providers carry out the ban themselves, so it isn’t applied evenly: our test finds Jio blocking tiktok.com while the site loads on Airtel. The app stays banned either way.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on TikTok in India no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
