Yes. TikTok isn’t offered in mainland China, where its owner ByteDance runs a separate Chinese app, Douyin, and the tiktok.com website is blocked.
Today’s test · www.tiktok.com
Blocked
www.tiktok.com fails to open on China Unicom and China Mobile, twice, while it opens from other countries.
The official status
TikTok was built for users outside China. Inside mainland China its owner, ByteDance, runs a twin app called Douyin, which keeps out international content and limits children’s use, and TikTok itself can’t be used there.
The tiktok.com website is blocked by China’s internet censors as well, so it doesn’t open on Chinese connections.
TikTok also stopped operating in Hong Kong in July 2020, after Beijing imposed a national security law on the city.
Douyin, ByteDance’s Chinese version of TikTok.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on TikTok in China no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
Only government-approved VPNs are legal in China, and most foreign VPNs are blocked.
