Yes. China has blocked Twitter since June 2009, and the block carried over to x.com after the 2023 rebrand.
Today’s test · x.com
Blocked
x.com fails to open on China Unicom and China Mobile, twice, while it opens from other countries.
The official status
Twitter became unreachable in China on 2 June 2009, two days before the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown, along with Hotmail, Flickr and Bing.
The block was never lifted, and it covers the x.com address used since the 2023 rebrand. Independent tests from inside China found x.com blocked in every test in the three months to October 2026.
Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, and WeChat.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on X (Twitter) in China no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
Only government-approved VPNs are legal in China, and most foreign VPNs are blocked.
