Server Locations
VyprVPN has 700+ servers in 70 locations. NordVPN has 5,600+ servers in 60 countries. Therefore, it’s easier to find a server closest to you with NordVPN!
Still, both VyprVPN and NordVPN have servers in the Americas, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil.
However, NordVPN has more server locations in the US (15), while VyprVPN only has eight. That means US NordVPN users can get better service!
Both providers also have servers across Eurasia, Oceania, Africa, and the Middle East. VyprVPN even has servers in the Marshall Islands and Qatar, which NordVPN doesn’t.
So, VyprVPN is better if you’re based in these locations and want to stay secure without compromising speed.
However, NordVPN’s servers are RAM-only to ensure third parties steal no data. VyprVPN’s servers are not. Thus, NordVPN is better for server variety and security!
China
Neither VPN provider is perfect for China, though VyprVPN is the better choice.
Both VPNs experience connectivity issues in the country, as confirmed by support.
NordVPN’s agents confirmed that Windows connections from China weren’t possible and the obfuscation feature doesn’t work. That makes it restrictive for those going to China for business.
However, the agents explained that it was possible to connect to iOS:
Meanwhile, VyprVPN offers detailed guides on downloading the app before going to China and accessing it in-country, which is useful for tourists and expats.
Moreover, their support provided detailed instructions on what to do in case of issues and how the Chameleon obfuscation protocol can help:
NordVPN offers 5,600+ servers in 60 countries, and VyprVPN has 700+ servers in 70 locations. NordVPN has a better server range overall that’s also more secure. However, neither provider is guaranteed to work well in China.
Is VyprVPN Faster Than NordVPN?
VyprVPN is not faster than NordVPN. In seven of my 12 speed tests, NordVPN was faster!
Since NordVPN’s NordLynx is designed to have super-fast speeds, that’s no surprise. IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols offered by NordVPN are also designed to be fast.
VyprVPN’s fastest VPN protocol is WireGuard. It also offers IKEv2, OpenVPN, and its proprietary Chameleon Protocol. I didn’t test that one because it’s designed for obfuscation and is unlikely to be fast.
For my twelve speed tests, I tested the following VPN protocols on Windows:
- VyprVPN’s Wireguard
- NordVPN’s NordLynx
- NordVPN and VyprVPN OpenVPN (UDP for NordVPN as it’s faster than TCP).
I also tested both providers’ IKEv2 speeds on my iPhone.
I used three server locations:
- UK (my location)
- US (New York)
- Germany
As I mentioned, NordVPN performed better in my speed tests, although VyprVPN did slightly better on the IKEv2 connections. Check the next section for detailed results!
Speed Tests
Here are the twelve results for my VyprVPN and NordVPN speed tests.
US Server | UK Server | German Server | |
---|---|---|---|
VyprVPN (WireGuard) | 28 Mbps drop | 2.5 Mbps drop | 9 Mbps drop |
NordVPN (NordLynx) | 4 Mbps drop | 4 Mbps drop | 4.5 Mbps drop |
VyprVPN (IKEv2) | 4 Mbps drop | 3 Mbps drop | 4 Mbps drop |
NordVPN (IKEv2) | 3 Mbps drop | 6 Mbps drop | 3 Mbps drop |
VyprVPN (OpenVPN) | 47 Mbps drop | 35 Mbps drop | 36 Mbps drop |
NordVPN (OpenVPN UDP) | 9 Mbps drop | 7 Mbps drop | 6 Mbps drop |
NordVPN’s fastest results were on the IKEv2 protocol on the American server.
It had the same speed drop on the German server, too.
The NordLynx protocol also performed well across all locations.
The UK was the best result – no surprise, given that’s where I’m located.
However, VyprVPN performed better than NordVPN on the UK server with WireGuard, though the difference was negligible.
The starkest difference was between NordVPN’s and VyprVPN’s OpenVPN connection speed on the US server.
NordVPN’s speed on that server and protocol was 38 Mbps faster than VyprVPN.
VyprVPN’s average speed loss was 28.1 Mbps, whereas NordVPN’s was 7.8 Mbps.
Since NordVPN performed better on seven out of 12 speed tests, NordVPN is the faster VPN.
Streaming
I tested VyprVPN and NordVPN with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and a Swedish streaming service Viaplay. Check the next section for the Netflix test results!
Here are the results for other streaming platforms:
Streaming Service | VyprVPN Access | NordVPN Access |
---|---|---|
BBC iPlayer | Yes | Yes |
Amazon Prime Video | Yes | Yes |
Viaplay | No | Yes |
NordVPN is the winner, as I successfully used it with 3/3 streaming services.
However, VyprVPN worked with two of the three services, which isn’t too bad, either.
Both VPNs worked with Amazon Prime Video.
With VyprVPN and NordVPN, I enjoyed Amazon shows like “Daisy Jones and the Six” and “Dead Ringers.”
NordVPN also allowed me to watch my favorite BBC iPlayer shows like “Doctor Who.”
Overall, both VyprVPN and NordVPN worked with BBC iPlayer, allowing me to enjoy the shows buffering-free and in HD. However, VyprVPN couldn’t unblock the Swedish streaming service Viaplay.
Therefore, if you want to watch Nordic noir on Viaplay, NordVPN is the better choice!
Netflix Tests
I tested VyprVPN and NordVPN with my favorite Netflix libraries – US, UK, and Sweden. These are the results:
Unblocks: | Netflix US? | Netflix UK? | Netflix Sweden? |
---|---|---|---|
VyprVPN | Yes | No | No |
NordVPN | Yes | Yes | No |
With NordVPN, I could connect to Netflix on the British servers on the NordLynx protocols, but only on the London server.
However, I could not access Swedish Netflix with NordVPN, and support couldn’t help.
The US Netflix worked with NordVPN’s New York server! I was able to watch “NCIS” with no issues.
VyprVPN came off worse – I couldn’t get UK or Swedish Netflix to work on WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2.
With the US Netflix, though, VyprVPN just barely worked better.
I tried its New York, DC, and Austin servers. DC was the best one – the rest gave me an error.
However, I experienced no issues or buffering when watching “Hoarders” on the DC server.
Both VPNs worked well with BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video.
NordVPN also worked with Viaplay. Meanwhile, NordVPN works with UK and US Netflix, and VyprVPN works with USA only. So, when it comes to streaming, NordVPN is the winner.
Torrenting
Neither VPN prohibits torrenting. However, both require the users not to use their services for copyright violation – whether by torrenting copyrighted files or otherwise!
More importantly, VyprVPN is the better choice for torrenting.
Even though NordVPN allows torrenting on all servers, if you try P2P on a NordVPN server not optimized for P2P, you’ll likely be rerouted to a P2P server in Canada or the Netherlands.
All 700+ VyprVPN servers allow torrenting.
However, neither of the providers allows seeding or port forwarding, as confirmed by the providers’ agents I spoke to.
Want further confirmation that VyprVPN is the better option? Take a look at the torrenting tests I conducted for VyprVPN and NordVPN!
P2P Tests
I conducted the torrenting tests on a 3.27 GB copyright-free movie, “The House I Live In.” I used the uTorrent torrenting client. For both providers, I connected to a UK server.
Here are my test results:
Average Download Speed | Max Download Speed | Download Completion Time | |
---|---|---|---|
VyprVPN | 1.3 MB/s | 1.9 MB/s | 48 minutes 32 seconds |
NordVPN | 904 KB/s | 1.6 MB/s | 1 hour 2 minutes |
VyprVPN had higher maximum and average torrent download speeds than NordVPN. It downloaded the file 14 minutes faster than NordVPN.
VyprVPN is faster for torrenting than NordVPN and allows torrenting on all its servers. However, neither provider offers seeding or port forwarding.
Gaming
To see how VyprVPN and NordVPN work with games, I tested ping and packet loss. Here are the results:
Server | Protocol | Ping, ms | Packet Loss | |
---|---|---|---|---|
VyprVPN | Sweden | WireGuard | 36 | 0% |
NordVPN | Sweden | NordLynx | 10 | 0% |
Then, I tested both VPNs with “Among Us” and “March of Empires: War of Lords.”
With NordVPN, my experience was seamless, with no lags or crashes! I defeated the King’s enemies in no time.
With VyprVPN, there was a minor lag on both games, but it didn’t impact my experiences.
Both VPNs had zero packet loss and are excellent for low- and high-intensity games.
But NordVPN had fewer lags and lower ping, making it a winner.
Privacy
Both VPNs state their commitment to privacy – but NordVPN stands out.
For instance, it only requires an email and password to create an account, whereas VyprVPN requires your first and last name. Also, NordVPN accepts cryptocurrency for payment, while VyprVPN doesn’t.
In addition, NordVPN operates out of the privacy-friendly jurisdiction of Panama. Meanwhile, VyprVPN is based in the USA, a 5-eyes country.
And finally, NordVPN offers extra privacy add-ons, like adblocker and dark web monitoring.
Now, let’s look at the providers’ no-logging policies!
Logging Policies
Here is what I found after reviewing the VPN providers’ privacy and no-logging policies:
Traffic Logs? | Connection Logs? | IP Address? | Server Location? | |
---|---|---|---|---|
VyprVPN | No | No | No | No |
NordVPN | No | No | No | No |
However, VyprVPN’s Android app collects data on the user’s location and Wi-Fi networks for the functioning of its Public Wi-Fi Protection feature.
Thankfully, both providers have undergone audits. NordVPN was audited three times – the last time was in December 2022 by Deloitte.
In addition, NordVPN’s software for Linux is open-source, with the code free for anyone to examine.
VyprVPN is also partially open-source and was audited – but only once in 2018 by Leviathan. Neither provider’s audit reports revealed any critical privacy issues, and those found were rectified.
I would nonetheless prefer to see a more recent privacy audit from VyprVPN.
Given these findings, I see NordVPN as the stronger contender for privacy.
NordVPN and VyprVPN have audited no-logging policies and open-source software. However, given NordVPN’s consistent track record of audits, privacy-friendly jurisdiction, acceptance of cryptocurrency, and privacy add-ons, it’s the clear winner.
Security
Both VPNs are on par when it comes to security features. They offer strong 256-bit encryption, leak protection, and kill switches.
I tested their 256-bit encryption using Wireshark software and the OpenVPN (UDP) protocol on Danish servers. My tests confirmed that the encryption works.
I also tested VyprVPN and NordVPN for DNS and other leaks, such as WebRTC and IP. My results showed no leaks whatsoever.
Last, NordVPN has a slight lead over VyprVPN for kill switches.
It allows you to customize the Windows kill switch to filter which apps it affects. VyprVPN doesn’t offer that.
However, you can set it up on VyprVPN to block traffic at the system level, even if VyprVPN isn’t switched on. That’s convenient if you don’t always remember to turn on your VPN.
Next, I’ll dive into extra security features!
Custom Protocols
Both NordVPN and VyprVPN have custom protocols for extra security and/or speed.
NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol is based on the WireGuard protocol and enables faster connections. As you can see from the speed test results earlier, it works very well!
Meanwhile, VyprVPN’s custom protocol, Chameleon, was designed for obfuscation. See the next section for more information on this feature!
Obfuscation
Both providers offer obfuscation – excellent news for users who want to bypass VPN-blocking software.
For NordVPN, obfuscation is on offer through its Obfuscated Servers.
They’re available in 16 NordVPN locations, including the Netherlands, USA, and UAE.
VyprVPN also offers an obfuscation feature through its Chameleon protocol.
Unlike NordVPN, obfuscation is available on all 700+ VyprVPN servers.
You just have to enable the Chameleon protocol in settings and connect to any VyprVPN server to bypass Internet censorship!
Public Wi-Fi Protection
Both providers have a feature that allows the user to stay secure on public Wi-Fi – and on VyprVPN, this feature is even customizable.
You can enable VyprVPN’s Public Wi-Fi Protection in the app’s settings.
It ensures that your connection is protected when you’re connected to unknown Wi-Fi networks.
You can also add your home or work network to the list of trusted networks if you don’t want to use a VPN for them.
NordVPN, on the other hand, offers a Trusted Network feature, allowing you to do the same with your trusted Wi-Fi networks.
You can also use NordVPN’s built-in auto-connect feature when using public Wi-Fi to ensure you’re protected even if you’ve never used a network before.
Extra Security Features
NordVPN offers a Multihop feature called DoubleVPN – something VyprVPN lacks. You can access these 9 server locations in the NordVPN app.
Additionally, NordVPN offers Onion Over VPN servers, letting you connect to the TOR network. VyprVPN also works with the TOR network – but no specialty servers!
Meanwhile, VyprVPN offers VyprDNS. This feature helps bypass censorship and ensures your traffic is encrypted and never logged. It’s available on all VyprVPN servers, is simple to set up, and is activated by default.
Both VPN providers offer great security features that encrypt your data, protect you from leaks, and keep you safe when you’re connected to public Wi-Fi.
You can also use their obfuscation features. However, NordVPN has features VyprVPN lacks (like Multihop), making it the winner.
Devices & Connections
VyprVPN and NordVPN work across different devices and OS.
They both support Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and Linux OS.
However, VyprVPN only works with Mint or Ubuntu for the latter OS.
NordVPN supports them, plus Debian and Elementary.
Both VPNs are compatible with routers but require manual setup.
NordVPN is compatible with over ten router types, including AsusWRT, OpenWRT, Tomato, OPNSense, and others.
VyprVPN, on the other hand, can only be configured on Tomato, AsusWRT, DD-WRT, and OpenWRT.
Both providers work with Fire Stick, Android TV, and complex systems like Synology and QNAP. NordVPN also offers three browser extensions to VyprVPN’s single one.
Here is a full overview of which devices and systems the VPN providers work with:
VyprVPN | NordVPN | |
---|---|---|
Compatible OS? | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Blackberry, Blackphone, Chrome (Android) | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Chrome |
Smart TVs? | Fire Stick, Roku, Android TV | Fire Stick, Android TV |
Router Support? | Yes (manual configuration) | Yes (manual configuration) |
Browser Extension? | Chrome | Chrome, Firefox, Edge |
NordVPN also offers SmartDNS. It can be activated in your account, allowing you to watch geo-blocked content on devices that don’t support VPNs, like game consoles and some smart TVs. I got the set-up confirmation ten minutes after whitelisting my IP in my NordVPN account.
This is a leg-up for NordVPN, as VyprVPN doesn’t offer SmartDNS.
But, on a better note, you can install both VPNs on unlimited devices.
Though, NordVPN only offers six simultaneous VPN connections – decent for a small household but not for a large group.
With VyprVPN, the number of simultaneous connections varies, depending on your subscription. You have to contact support to find out how many you can have, which is inconvenient. In my case, it was five.
NordVPN’s comprehensive set of compatible devices, including routers, plus its six devices and straightforward SmartDNS offering, put it ahead of VyprVPN in devices and connections.
Features
Split Tunnelling
Only NordVPN offers split tunneling. Despite VyprVPN’s claim on their website that they also offer split tunneling, that turned out not to be the case!
A VyprVPN support agent told me that split tunneling was under development but not active yet. There was no mention of it on the Windows or iOS app either.
Fortunately, NordVPN’s split tunneling feature is available on Windows and Android. It’s included in all subscriptions, and you can customize it directly in the app, enabling you to enjoy the content from home and abroad.
Dedicated IP
If you need a Dedicated IP for secure access to your IoT devices or another purpose, consider NordVPN. There’s no dedicated IP on offer with VyprVPN.
NordVPN offers dedicated IP as an add-on with its subscription for an extra cost.
The cost depends on the plan you choose – there are three on offer:
- 1-month plan ($12.99)
- 15-month plan ($4.59 p/m)
- 39-month plan ($3.29 p/m).
The Dedicated IP servers are available in ten locations, including the US, the UK, Australia, and Japan.
Dark Web Monitor
NordVPN also offers a Dark Web Monitoring feature – something to consider if you’re concerned about your data leaking online! VyprVPN offers no such feature.
Other Features
Threat Protection (adblocker) and file protection are other features offered only by NordVPN. That makes NordVPN better if you browse a lot of websites with ads.
NordVPN is a lot more feature-rich than VyprVPN. It offers split tunneling, Dedicated IP, adblocker, and Dark Web Monitor. NordVPN is, therefore the winner.
Customer Support
Both providers have a 24/7 Live Chat to answer customers’ queries – although it’s easier to connect to a human with VyprVPN. With NordVPN, you must go through a bot – the key is asking for an agent ASAP!
I asked both providers’ agents the same question – “If I’m traveling to a restrictive country like Russia or Turkey, how can I be sure that my ISP won’t register that I’m using a VPN?”
With VyprVPN, I got a response in under 3 minutes, specifying many details about how ISPs detected VPNs and how Chameleon could help prevent that.
With NordVPN, the response was slow (over 10 minutes), and I had to go through a bot. The response was less than satisfactory, especially given how NordVPN’s obfuscation feature is advertised!
You can also submit a ticket to both providers, email them, and read through their guides and forums.
Given the speed and the response of the VyprVPN support team, which were better than NordVPN’s, I crown them the winner.
Usability
VyprVPN and NordVPN are both user-friendly apps – on desktop and mobile.
Given the breadth of NordVPN’s features, I was impressed with how quickly I could find all of them on Windows and iOS and how easy it was to tweak the settings.
The mobile function even had a search bar!
However, it may take time for the less advanced VPN users to get familiar with all the NordVPN features and how to enable them – especially in the Desktop application.
VyprVPN offers fewer features, making setting up and navigating even easier. Many settings are enabled by default, so you only need to click the button to connect! It’s very beginner-friendly on both mobile and Desktop.
The server list also shows the Ping in MS, making choosing the best server easier. NordVPN doesn’t have that.
NordVPN also took longer to connect to the best VPN server – 13 seconds to VyprVPN’s 7.
Both VPNs have user-friendly interfaces. However, VyprVPN is more suitable for beginners and allows a better overview of server options.
Price & Value
Both VPNs offer similar prices. Here’s an example of VyprVPN pricing:
And here’s an example of NordVPN’s best plan (2 years):
However, NordVPN offers more choices in terms of pricing plans, and the best ones offer better value for money than VyprVPN.
Moreover, VyprVPN offers fewer payment methods than NordVPN – credit cards, PayPal, App Store, and Google Play. NordVPN offers all of these, plus cryptocurrency and cash.
Both providers offer a 30-day money-back guarantee per their refund policies. However, NordVPN also offers a 7-day free trial on Android devices – no free trials for VyprVPN!
NordVPN offers a lot of pricing plans to choose from, some of which are better value than VyprVPN. It also offers more payment methods, making it the better choice for value for money.
