Verdict:
NOT RECOMMENDED
Overall Score:
6.1 / 10

BoxPN is a relatively affordable VPN that you can obtain at $2.99 per month.

But the rather slow speeds and low number of servers are a serious hit on the overall service quality. I recommend to use NordVPN rather than BoxPN.

BoxPN claims to offer the lowest price on the net for VPN access.

The service also promises everything from online anonymity to Wi-Fi security and access to restricted sites like Netflix and Pandora.

But as you probably know, when it comes to VPNs, this is often an unlikely combination.

So, I decided to conduct a BoxPN review to find out if the service truly lives up to its bold claims.

Overview of Boxpn VPN

BoxPN website

BoxPN is a Seychelles-based VPN owned by Edelino Commerce Ltd, the same company behind FrootVPN and VPNTunnel.

Launched in 2015, the VPN provides access to 150+ servers in over 37 countries. The company promises trouble-free surfing, with zero-throttling and unlimited bandwidth.

BoxPN uses bank-level AES 256-bit encryption, which offers an impenetrable layer of protection alongside the OpenVPN protocol.

You can use the VPN on a wide range of devices, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and even routers. But beware, not all the platforms get a native application.

In regards to speed, BoxPN is relatively slow.

On a good side, they are well-priced and allow as many as 5 devices on a single license.

Payment methods include PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Perfect Money, as well as several cryptocurrencies.

Pros

Cons

Security – Protocols & Encryption

The provider offers both AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption and supports four tunneling protocols – OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, PPTP, and SSTP.

Also, BoxPN certificates are all signed using 2048-bit RSA key, the same standard used by most banks.

Is BoxPN Really Safe?

BoxPN Keeps No Important Logs

BoxPN has a simplistic privacy policy. I went through their privacy policy and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they do not log any browsing activity.

However, I could help but notice that there were no mentions of connections logs anywhere which is quite suspicious.

The provider does not store private information about individual activities, but they do highlight that they collect email, username, password, and billing history (without the credit card numbers).

A simplistic privacy policy of BoxPN

Although their zero-logging stance provides some confidence, I was still gutted to learn that they are open to sharing data to comply with legal obligations.

Jurisdiction – Is It Located in a 14-Eyes Country?

BoxPN is located in Seychelles, a country that sits well outside the 14 Eyes sphere of influence.

This, combined with the fact that the service is not required by law to retain its data, make BoxPN, an ideal option for privacy-conscious users.

Leaks – IP, DNS, and WebRTC Tests

Some VPNs can still reveal your real IP, DNS, or WebRTC information even while you are actively connected to the service.

When that happens, anyone looking can be able to see your physical location.

Fortunately, BoxPN delivers leak-free connections.

I connected to the Hong Kong, China server and tested for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. The service passed with flying colors, you can see the results in the screenshots below.

Passed IP leak test

DNS Leaks

WebRTC Leaks

For a more comprehensive picture, I also conducted a complete IP, DNS, and WebRTC using ipleak.net.

Again, there was no evidence to suggest otherwise.

No leaks detected with ipleak.net

In addition to IP, DNS, and WebRTC leak protection, BoxPN also offers an internet kill switch, which protects your data in the event your VPN connection drops.

At the moment, the feature is only available in the macOS client.

Servers and Server Locations

The VPN service provides access to over 150 servers in 53 locations and 37 countries spread across the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Oceania.

BoxPN promises a 99 percent guaranteed uptime availability and some of the countries you can connect to include:

Despite their nice server spread, I was disappointed to find out that the service does not feature SmartDNS or Dedicated IPs.

Is It Good for Users in China?

BoxPN is one of the few VPNs that have bare metal servers in China.

The service may only have one server in the country, but it provides sufficient encryption to work around the Great Firewall with ease.

Speed and Reliability

As I mentioned earlier, BoxPN delivers below average speeds.

To test the speed, I connected to New York, London, Sydney, and Hong Kong servers using 75 Mbps internet connection.

Location Ping (ms) Download (Mbps) Upload (Mbps)
US (New York) 280 8.91 9.13
UK (London) 178 20.10 10.82
AU (Sydney) 362 9.87 4.20

While the speeds did vary from server to server, overall, the connections were slow, and as such, I wouldn’t recommend the VPN to gamers, streaming fans, or anyone looking for fast internet speeds.

Is BoxPN Compatible With Torrents?

BoxPN’s robust encryption makes it an ideal candidate for torrenting.

The VPN is compatible with P2P and promises to keep all your torrent activity anonymous from your ISP and everyone else connected to the same torrent swarm.

In so doing, BoxPN ensures you are safe from not only the authorities but also copyright trolls.

That said, a good torrenting VPN has tick more than one box.

While BoxPN does guarantee safety and privacy, their slow speeds nullify all that.

You would hate to wait for hours to download a single file.

But then again, if you are happy to leave torrent downloads for long periods, it might be an affordable option.

Streaming – Does it Work With Netflix?

Not many VPNs can unblock Netflix.

While Netflix doesn’t make it illegal to use a VPN, they have put in place strong measures to detect and block VPN IPs.

Fortunately, you can use BoxPN to access the streaming service from anywhere in the world.

However, it won’t be without trial and error since not all the US servers support Netflix.

Again, you will find the US servers to be quite slow, especially if you are located in Europe and other distant locations.

Apps and Supported Devices

When it comes to device compatibility, BoxPN performs admirably.

The provider offers apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android and setups for Linux and routers.

The apps boast a clean interface and are easy to set up and use.

There is, however, no support for Android TVs, Amazon Fire Stick, and similar devices. But then again, you can hook the VPN to your router and cover all the devices connected to your WiFi network.

Customer Service

Fast Live Chat Support

This is the one area where BoxPN edges out most of its competitors.

The VPN offers a Live Chat on their homepage where you can direct contact their customer support team.

On sending a message, I received a reply within 5 minutes, which is quite impressive by VPN standards.

Quick response

Knowledgebase Section – FAQ + Tutorials

In addition to the Live Chat and email ticketing system, BoxPN also offers a Knowledge Base section where you can find FAQs, troubleshooting guides and set up tutorials.

What Do Customers Think BoxPN VPN?

After searching the internet for other user reviews on BoxPN, I found a mix of opinions. Several users were pleased by the VPN’s affordability and the security and privacy features.

I was, however, perturbed to see a complaint about BoxPN’s payment practices.

However, since I didn’t come across a similar complaint, I want to think this was an isolated incident.

Review from Steve

What Should You Consider Before Getting a Service Like Boxpn VPN?

Below are some of the aspects I will be covering in this review.

Security and Privacy

As someone who fancies online privacy, this is usually the first consideration I make.

After all, if a VPN can’t guarantee me safety and anonymity when online, why the hell should I use it in the first place?

Always pay close attention to the encryption standards and the tunneling protocols your VPN uses.

And if like me security is your top priority, then you should opt for a service that offers AES 256-bit encryption with OpenVPN.

Connection Speeds

Generally, a VPN will slow down your internet speed.

Often, this is due to the encryption process but also routing plays a significant role.

Fortunately, this does not mean sacrificing your entire bandwidth.

The best VPNs can ensure a subtle change in speed while also providing safe and secure connections.

Servers and Server Locations

The larger the server network, the better.

You will have better odds of finding fast and stable servers as well as servers in your preferred locations.

To view geo-restricted content, you must first connect to a server located in a country where that particular content is viewable.

Privacy Policy + Jurisdiction

Many VPNs will advertise a no-logging policy but then go ahead and store every bit of data you provide.

Some share the information with third-parties and those that do not, still leave you exposed should the authorities raid their premises.

Compatibility and Ease of Use

Does your VPN come with ready-to-use custom apps for all your primary devices?

And if so, are the apps easy to set up and use?

If you are new to VPNs, it would be wise to stay clear of any VPN that requires manual configurations.

Customer Support

A fast and secure customer service can help you resolve any issues with your VPN, be it software or account-related. I fancy a provider that offers Live Chat or phone support.

BoxPN VPN Alternatives

BoxPN has earned well-deserved plaudits for its robust security and privacy features. However, its connections speeds leave much to be desired.

Additionally, the VPN comes with a strikingly low number of servers, which could lead to overloading and unstable connections.

Luckily, there are a few alternatives that deliver fast and stable connections without sacrificing security and privacy.

These include:

NordVPN – Best All-Around VPN

With over 5,500 servers in 60 countries, NordVPN offers one of the largest server networks available. Their servers support both SmartDNS and Dedicated IPs, which are both lacking in BoxPN.

The service is also incredibly fast, which makes it ideal for streaming, gaming, and torrenting.

NordVPN is competitively priced and features a 30-day money-back guarantee.

There are apps for all the primary devices, including Linux and a single subscription covers 6 devices simultaneously.

ExpressVPN – Best for Streaming

ExpressVPN boasts ultra-fast speeds across all their over 3,000 servers.

They provide access to 160 locations across 94 countries, making the VPN perfect for bypassing geo-restrictions.

The VPN works perfectly with Netflix, and their SmartDNS feature allows you to access the streaming service on your TV.

ExpressVPN is also ideal for torrenting thanks to its military-grade encryption and strict privacy policy.

The only major drawback with this service is its pricing, with the cheapest plan (yearly subscription) available at $8.32 per month.

TouchVPN – Best Affordable VPN

touchvpn.net website

TouchVPN offers a similarly small server cover coverage, but when it comes to speed, the service trounces BoxPN.

The VPN uses AES 256-bit with OpenVPN, allowing you to enjoy total anonymity when online.

The service does lack dedicated IPs which might make it less appealing to streaming fans. On the bright side, it free and a good BoxPN for budget-conscious users.

Proton VPN – Best for Online Security

ProtonVPN offers a slightly larger server network than BoxPN.

However, it’s their speeds which set them apart. ProtonVPN offers fast, stable connections, and with the SmartDNS proxy, you can bypass geo-restrictions while also retaining your ISP speeds.

The VPN is equipped with bank-level encryption and comes with best-in-class tunneling protocols. There apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and Mac and you can connect up to 10 devices at the same time.

Final Word

There is a lot to like about this service.

First, their protocols and encryption standards are as robust as it gets and they’re located in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction.

Secondly, their apps were easy to use, and I was thrilled by the speed of their customer support.

BoxPN is also quite affordable in the long-term but for monthly users, it can be costly.

But what really hurts this VPN, is its server connections.

The service is one of the slowest I’ve ever tested and because of that, I wouldn’t recommend it.

If you are looking for a fast yet secure service, I suggest checking out NordVPN.

They offer robust security, fast speeds, and a massive server network.
