Overview of proXPN VPN

proXPN website

proXPN is a veteran VPN service that has been around since 2009.

The provider is located in the Netherlands, a nine eyes territory, but they do not keep any activity or connection logs.

Their network lags far behind that of top providers like NordVPN and is composed of only a handful of servers in the US, UK, Netherlands, and Singapore.

Likewise, I wasn’t particularly impressed with their speeds, but the service did perform quite admirably when it came to geo-restrictions.

The VPN can also help you if you are looking for a free VPN that can offer basic protection. However, for more security-sensitive applications, you should look for other alternatives.

proXPN offers a freemium service that allows unrestricted access to all their servers up to 500 MB per month after which, you will need to upgrade to their premium plan.

The provider accepts multiple payment options including PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, and Bitcoin.

Pros

Cons

Features and Benefits of proXPN

Security and Privacy

proXPN has an excellent looking website where you can find some valuable information about the service.

The site is secured with SSL encryption ensuring your data and interactions are protected.

When it comes to the software, proXPN offers a bittersweet mix of security and privacy features.

Logging Policy

proXPN jurisdiction is worrisome and understandably so.

The provider is based in the Netherlands, a nine eyes country and is, therefore, prone to government interference and surveillance.

However, as mentioned earlier, they maintain a strict privacy policy and keep neither activity nor connections logs.

This makes it impossible for the authorities to collect anything should they come knocking.

Again, proXPN makes it clear that they do not share any user information with third parties.

Encryption Standards and Protocols

Another area where proXPN does disappoint.

Whereas most VPNs offer military-grade AES algorithms, proXPN uses the much weaker RSA 2048-bit encryption.

When it comes to the tunneling protocols, proXPN allows you to connect using either OpenVPN or PPTP.

Although OpenVPN remains one of the fastest and most secure protocols available, I’m hoping they can expand the list to include protocols such as IKEv2/IPsec.

No DNS Leak Protection

proXPN has no option for DNS leak protection.

The feature is pivotal if you want to stay anonymous online.

A DNS leak occurs when your device routes your search queries via your ISP’s DNS servers instead of the VPNs.

When that happens, your ISP is able to monitor your online activity even though you have an active VPN connection.

Internet Kill Switch

One exciting feature that you will get with proXPN is VPN Guard, an internet kill switch that allows you to specify the programs that should be shut down if your connection drops.

This is key should you be torrenting a file, as it keeps you from being found out by a media owner’s copyright team.

Servers and Locations

proXPN has one of the smallest server networks of any VPN I have reviewed.

The VPN has a total of 7 servers in 4 countries – US, UK, Netherlands, and Singapore. I tested the servers for purposes of this review, and only the US servers seemed to be working.

Speed and Performance

The server speeds weren’t very good either.

For all speed tests, I used the OpenVPN protocol, and my baseline connection speed was approximate 50 Mbps download (25 Mbps upload).

Since none of the nearby EU servers were working at the time of testing, I only tested long-distance servers in the US.

Location Ping (ms) Download (Mbps) Upload (Mbps)
US (New York) 116 9.13 8.56
US (Chicago) 121 16.01 13.03
US (Miami) 126 10.57 9.76

As you can see above, there was a massive reduction in speed across all servers with the New York server posting a -81.12% rating. If you need a VPN for streaming, this won’t be sufficient.

Allows Torrenting: Not a Good Option Though

proXPN allows torrenting on their servers without any restrictions or limitations.

However, the VPN’s slow speeds are sure to frustrate any user.

Also, the VPN’s lack of DNS leak protection can expose your torrenting activities to your ISP and authorities.

Not Working With Netflix

Over the last couple of years, Netflix has significantly strengthened its security systems to detect and block VPN IPs.

Still, several providers have found a workaround and continue to offer access to Netflix.

Unfortunately, proXPN is not one of them.

However, given their small server network, it’s not surprising.

Supported Devices – Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android

proXPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS and comes with simple and intuitive apps.

They also offer PTPP configurations for Ubuntu (Linux) and DD-WRT routers.

The mobile apps are easy to use but I found the Windows client to be quite unstable.

No Simultaneous Connections

Although the VPN is compatible with multiple devices, it does not support concurrent connections to a single account.

You can, however, still set up the VPN on as many devices you like provided you don’t use them at the same time.

Great Customer Support, But No Live Chat

proXPN may not have a lot going for it, but their customer support is one of the few exceptions.

Premium customers can access fast and reliable support via email and phone. They also offer a nice help page where you can find setup tutorials and other useful information.

Pricing

Free and Premium VPN

proXPN offers both freemium and premium options to users.

The premium service has three pricing plans to choose from and comes with a 30-day risk-free trial.

However, the prices are a bit costly with the lowest starting at $29.95.

What Other Users Think about proXPN?

After testing proXPN, I looked at what other users were saying about the service.

Overall, many seemed to be impressed by the VPN’s free service, although some did complain about the limited speed, bandwidth and compatibility.

Some reviewers also found the VPN’s inability to unblock Netflix to be a deal-breaker.

What Should You Consider Before Getting a Service Like proXPN?

VPNs can be used for a wide variety of applications including bypassing internet restrictions, hiding online identity, and safeguarding your data when on a public network.

However, not all VPNs are created equal.

So, what should you consider before buying your ideal VPN?

Connection Speed

Regardless of how secure it is, a slow VPN can be downright frustrating.

While a VPN will generally affect your internet speed, the best providers can keep that at a minimum. It is, therefore, essential to review the speed ratings before settling on any provider.

Server Coverage

To access restricted content, you will need a VPN that has servers in a country where that particular content is available.

Luckily, most providers offer servers in all the top locations in the world, including the US, which should thrill Netflix and Hulu fans.

It would also help to ensure your VPN has servers in your country of residence or at the very least, in a location near you.

Data Security

What protocols and encryption does the provider offer?

If you are serious about the safety of your traffic, I recommend choosing a VPN that supports OpenVPN and AES 256-bit encryption, the standard used by security experts across the world.

Technical Support

A good VPN should be easy to use and set up.

The last thing you need is a VPN that requires you to be a tech expert.

Ease of Use

A fast and reliable customer service team will help you resolve errors and any other issues as soon as they arise.

Here, I recommend a provider that offers 24/7 phone or Live Chat support.

Alternatives to proXPN VPN

NordVPN: The Best All-Around VPN

NordVPN is an excellent VPN service that offers robust security and incredible geo-unblocking capabilities.

The provider boasts 5,822 servers in 60 countries around the world, which makes it such a great alternative to proXPN.

With regard to security, the VPN uses military-grade AES 256-bit encryption with OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec protocols.

Additionally, NordVPN comes with outstanding features such as Onion over VPN, Multi-hop VPN (Double Encryption), DNS leak protection, a kill switch, and CyberSec, their proprietary ad and malware blocker.

NordVPN also comes with an exciting feature, SmartPlay, which allows you to bypass geo-restrictions automatically and access streaming servers such as Netflix.

They offer native apps for all the major devices as well as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox.

NordVPN is competitively priced, and with a single license, you can connect up to 6 devices at the same time.

Similarities

Differences

ExpressVPN: Great for High Speeds

ExpressVPN is another powerful proXPN alternative.

The VPN operates out of the British Virgin Islands, a country that is well-outside the ‘Fourteen Eyes’ alliance.

ExpressVPN has the largest server network of any VPN provider with servers in 160 locations and 94 countries.

Their speeds are lightning-fast and the VPN has a 99% guaranteed uptime availability.

To safeguard your data, ExpressVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption and protocols include OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP/IPsec.

Similarly to NordVPN, ExpressVPN also offers DNS leak protection, a feature that’s missing in proXPN.

ExpressVPN offers monthly, annual, 2-year, and 3-year plans.

A 30-day money guarantee covers all subscriptions.

Similarities

Differences

IPVanish website

IPVanish is fast, reliable, and easy to use VPN.

The VPN is based in the United States and operates over 1300 servers in 75-plus countries.

IPVanish is equipped with AES 256-bit encryption and supports OpenVPN, IKEv2, and L2TP/IPsec. Extra security and privacy features include DNS leak protection, NAT Firewall, and an automatic kill switch.

They also offer SOCKS5 Proxy, which, while not encrypted, allows you to mask your IP address while you make P2P connections.

Final Word

Although proXPN does offer great customer service and a true no logs service, their slow connection speeds end up being their undoing.

The VPN’s security encryptions also leave a lot to be desired, and I wouldn’t recommend the VPN for anything other than light browsing.

If you are looking for a great all-around VPN, I recommend a more reliable, more robust choice – NordVPN.
