RitaVPN is a Hong Kong-based VPN service from Weikawen Technology Ltd.

It is advertised as a Netflix VPN with no restrictions or buffering, and as a streaming fan, I was intrigued.

The provider offers affordable short-term plans and breaks the mold with incredible 1-day and 7-day packages.

The service had 20 servers in 15 countries.

While this does pale in comparison to the global networks offered by competitors like ExpressVPN, it’s not always a deal-breaker.

So, I decided to give the VPN a full test run to see how it performed overall.

Is it worth the hassle?

Let’s find out.

Overview of RitaVPN

RitaVPN website

RitaVPN is a relatively young VPN that was launched in 2018.

It is owned by Weikawen Technology, a Hong Kong company with its headquarters in Lockhart Ctr.,301-307 Lockhart Rd., Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

RitaVPN uses the OpenVPN protocol as well as 256-bit AES encryption to secure your online traffic.

The VPN also comes with a kill switch feature that works like a fail-safe in case your connection drops.

And in regards to compatibility, you can run RitaVPN on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices.

Pros

Cons

Privacy & Jurisdiction

RitaVPN appears to take online privacy quite seriously.

The provider maintains a strict and transparent privacy policy and collects minimal information.

Are There Any Signs That RitaVPN Keeps Logs?

On their website, RitaVPN claims that they do not collect logs.

While this is pleasing to see, you simply can’t trust homepage slogans nowadays.

Many of the VPN providers that advertise a ‘no-logging’ service on their website, inevitably, admit to keeping some logs in their privacy policy.

Naturally, I checked RitaVPN’s privacy policy to see if they make good on their ‘no-logging’ claims.

Impressively, they do back up their claims.

They keep neither activity nor connection logs.

On their website, they state the following:

RitaVPN's privacy policy

However, the provider does gather some usage statistics, including the app version and the aggregate sum of data transferred.

You’ll also be required to provide some Personal Information when creating an account.

This includes your:

  • Name
  • Email address

Hong Kong Jurisdiction & Applicable Law

On the surface, Hong Kong looks to be a good jurisdiction for a VPN.

It is not a member of the 14-Eyes spy alliance and does not have any data retention laws that may compel providers to log your activity data.

However, the fact that the region is under increasing Chinese influence is a major cause for concern.

While you may not have to worry about Uncle Sam or any other 14-eyes member nation, you will still have to worry about the authoritarian Chinese regime and its questionable privacy practices.

Security

Any VPN worth its salt should keep you safe online.

RitaVPN is secure but I found their security features to be a bit limited.

Tunneling Protocols & Encryption

RitaVPN uses best-in-class AES 256-bit encryption.

AES 256-bit is impossible to crack and is the same encryption used by the National Security Agency (NSA) as well as banking organizations.

For tunneling, they use the OpenVPN protocol, which again is the most secure option.

In the VPN world, this is as good as it gets.

While RitaVPN does guarantee top-notch security, the VPN lacks versatility.

It only offers a single protocol and does not allow you to customize your encryption level.

Other Great Security Features

You must be wondering what other security features you can expect out of RitaVPN.

The truth is, not that many.

The VPN offers only two additional security features:

Leak Tests

After thorough testing, I did not find any connection leaks present.

I checked for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks, and in each test, RitaVPN passed with flying colors.

So, if you are connected to an Australian, that’s the location anyone monitoring your connection will see.

Below is a snapshot of the results.

IP Leak Test

No IP leaks were found

DNS Leak Test

No DNS leaks were found

WebRTC Leak Test

No WebRTC leaks were found

Virus & Malware Test

After checking for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks, I also run the VPN’s installation file through VirusTotal to test for viruses and other malware.

As you can see in the image below, the VPN came out clean.

No viruses were found

Server Locations

RitaVPN servers

RitaVPN has one of the smallest server networks I’ve ever encountered.

You ask me, 20 servers is a little bit itsy-bitsy.

However, the provider has done a nice job of spreading the servers across 15 countries around the world.

With Rita VPN, you can connect to locations in multiple continents including North America, South America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific.

That said, most of the countries have one server, and the VPN allows specific city selection in only one server location – New York.

They do, however, offer unlimited server switching.

I was also pleased to find the VPN also has dedicated servers in:

For a 2-year old provider, RitaVPN seems to be headed in the right direction.

But right now, I find their server network to be underwhelming.

Does RitaVPN Work in China?

The Great Firewall of China (GFW) can turn a once-functioning VPN useless.

Many of the VPNs simply stop working when you land in the country.

And with thousands of sites censored in China, it’s essential to choose a VPN that can bypass the GFW when traveling to the Asian nation.

The most surprising thing about RitaVPN is that despite its small server network, the VPN seems to work perfectly in China.

If that will last, it remains to be seen.

As always, I will continue to monitor the VPN and update this review accordingly if anything changes.

Does RitaVPN Provide Dedicated IPs?

The provider does not provide dedicated IP addresses.

They likewise do not provide shared static IPs, which means you can only obtain a dynamic IP.

Dedicated IP addresses have so many advantages.

They give you control over your online reputation and provide a hassle-free log in to sites like PayPal and Gmail.

Additionally, dedicated IPs can come in handy if you are looking to access a network remotely and securely.

Speed & Performance

A lot of factors can affect your VPN’s speed – from server load to the encryption standard and distance to server.

Generally, the further the server is from your location, the slower the connection.

To find out how well RitaVPN performs, I tested six different servers.

The results are shown below.

Note: When conducting the speed tests, my baseline speeds were 96.34 Mbps download, 24.02 Mbps upload, and a ping of 12 ms.

Location Ping (ms) Download (Mbps) Upload (Mbps)
Nearby server 49 71.95 22.17
US - VIP 393 63.08 19.64
US - Netflix 387 61.19 19.38
Switzerland - VIP 126 68.75 21.06
Australia - VIP 447 54.81 18.37
Switzerland - VIP 465 51.01 15.90

Overall, RitaVPN delivered decent speeds. Nearby locations – Europe – sapped a manageable percentage while distant locations like Australia took a more noticeable hit.

I also tested the US servers, and both performed admirably.

On average, RitaVPN slowed down my internet speeds by 35.85%.

Price & Value

RitaVPN has four subscription plans, some of which are unique in the VPN industry.

So far, they are the only service I’ve encountered that has a 1-day package.

Although the 1-day subscription is costly in the long run, it does provide an affordable way to test the service before opting for a long-term plan.

How Much Does RitaVPN Cost?

Payment Methods

As for the payment method, the provider accepts:

You will want to note that they do not accept cryptocurrency payments, such as Bitcoin.

Does RitaVPN Have a Free Trial?

If you are using an Android device, you can get a free trial for 7 hours by watching ads.

Also, they offer a risk-free 7-day money-back guarantee.

However, this refund option is only limited to their 1-year plan.

Streaming

In the good old days, VPNs could unblock anything.

That included streaming services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

Today, Netflix and VPNs are like oil and water: they are simply incompatible.

Both Netflix and iPlayer have implemented robust measures to detect and ban VPN IPs.

If you try to use a VPN to access Netflix, often you’ll be met with the following error message.

Streaming Error: You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of those services and try again.

Despite Netflix’s crackdown on VPNs, a few providers have found reliable workarounds. Is Rita VPN one of these VPNs?

Fortunately, yes. I tested the two available US servers, and both worked seamlessly.

I was able to watch a few movies and TV shows that are normally unavailable in my location.

In the screenshot below, I was streaming Roswell, New Mexico, a 2019 Sci-Fi TV show.

RitaVPN works with Netflix

While RitaVPN was successful against Netflix, I was unable to unblock BBC iPlayer and several other popular streaming services.

If you are a British expatriate looking to access iPlayer shows, this might not be the VPN for you. The service does not have a UK server and, as such, cannot unblock UK exclusive content.

Netflix US
Hulu
BBC iPlayer
Amazon Prime Video

Torrenting (P2P)

Torrenting allows you to access a huge collection of content, but if you are not careful, it can bring more harm than good.

In many countries, using sites like The Pirate Bay, RARBG, and 1337x can result in hefty fines or even jail time.

Not to mention the threat posed by hackers hiding in torrent swarms.

To stay safe while torrenting, you simply must use a VPN.

But then again, not all VPNs are suited for torrenting.

Is RitaVPN Good for Torrenting?

RitaVPN allows torrenting on a majority of their servers.

On the security front, the VPN provides solid protection thanks to its robust encryption and zero-logs policy.

While I would like to see the provider offer features such as perfect forward secrecy, I was pleased with their performance.

Platforms & Devices

Another area where this service a little bit disappoints.

RitaVPN is compatible with only four devices:

There is no support for Linux, smart TVs, or routers.

Also, the provider does not offer proxy extensions for browsers.

Although you can still use the VPN on non-compatible devices by sharing your PC connection, for many users, this can be an irritating inconvenience.

How Many Devices Does RitaVPN Allow at a Go?

RitaVPN supports a maximum of four connections at the same time.

So basically, with a single license, you can cover all compatible devices.

Still, this is not enough, and I would like to see them offer support for routers.

With routers, you can protect pretty much every device in your home.

Customer Support

RitaVPN provides several channels through which you can seek help when stuck.

Below are the current support options:

Although the provider does have a good number of customer support options, I was disappointed with their response times.

And while I was pleased to see that they offer live chat support, it soon dawned on me that the option is not available 24/7.

You can leave a message

Their other support channels fared much better.

Besides email, phone, and live chat support, RitaVPN also has a nice help center that is stocked with setup guides and troubleshooting tutorials.

User Experience

RitaVPN offers minimalistic clients that are simple and intuitive to use, and you can easily set up a connection by clicking the prominent “ON/OFF” button.

On/Off button

Most of the options you need are visible from the home screen.

For instance, clicking the headphone icon on the right top corner takes you to the help section while the “User” button on the left-hand side allows you to view your order, notices, and purchase a new package.

Other buttons

RitaVPN offers very limited customizability, and it isn’t much you can change.

Everything, including the protocol, encryption, kill switch, and features like auto-connect, is set by default.

While this may appeal to beginners, seasoned users may find it a bit restrictive.

Final Word

Yes, I recommend RitaVPN.

To be honest, I was kind of expecting such a new and affordable service to cut a few corners here and there.

But after putting this VPN under a barrage of tests, I can confidently say they live up to their claims.

RitaVPN is equipped with robust encryption and does not keep activity logs.

The VPN works seamlessly with Netflix as well and I found its speeds to be sufficient for streaming.

Their available apps are simple and easy to use but they could, however, improve on device compatibility.

But everything considered, RitaVPN is a decent service and I would recommend it to beginners and seasoned users alike.
