For example, you can change servers or use MediaStreamer.

ExpressVPN Not Working With Netflix? Try These Fixes
If you can’t connect ExpressVPN with Netflix, try the below solutions.
Change ExpressVPN Servers
- Success Rate: Very High
- Duration: 60 seconds
- Difficulty: Easy
Netflix can stop connections from a specific server if too many people are using the same server. For instance, the New York server used to be the most popular for Netflix, which is likely why it no longer works.
I tried the below ExpressVPN servers and they worked well with Netflix:
- New Jersey-3 for US Netflix
- Perth for Australia Netflix
- Docklands for UK Netflix
- Marina Bay for Singapore Netflix
- Toronto for Canada Netflix
- Amsterdam for Netherlands Netflix
- Paris-2 for France Netflix
- Milan for Italy Netflix
- Barcelona for Spain Netflix
You can change your server on ExpressVPN through the following steps:
- Tap on the hamburger menu (≡) on the top left of your VPN app after launching it.
- Tap “VPN locations” and pick another server. I’ll pick Australia – Melbourne for this example.
- After picking your location, the connection will establish automatically.
Refresh your browser if you’re using a PC or restart the Netflix app on a mobile device after you’re connected to an ExpressVPN server.
Use MediaStreamer
- Success Rate: Very High
- Duration: 16 seconds
- Difficulty: Hard
You can use ExpressVPN’s special MediaStreamer feature to access Netflix US’s streaming video library.
You can also fix the Netflix connection problem using MediaStreamer by replacing your ISP’s DNS address with an ExpressVPN DNS server.
In my tests, MediaStreamer was more reliable than the ExpressVPN app for accessing US Netflix. However, MediaStreamer doesn’t encrypt your IP address.
Follow the below steps to start using a MediaStreamer:
- Log into the ExpressVPN website but ensure your VPN connection isn’t on.
- Tap “DNS Settings.”
- Tap “Register my IP address” and ensure you enable the Automatically register my IP address button.
- Scroll down and click “Configure DNS on this device.”
- Ensure you save the following server addresses or keep your browser window open since you’ll use them later in this guide.
- Press the Windows key + R to launch the Run prompt, enter ncpa.cpl, and select “OK.”
- Right-click the active internet connection in the network connections box, then select properties. I’ll click Wi-Fi for this example. In case you’re asked to allow changes made on this device, tap YES.
- Ensure the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is unchecked, then double tap on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv6).
- Select “Use the following DNS server addresses” on the General tab. Fill in the server addresses you saved and tap “OK” then “OK.”
- You’re done with the MediaSteamer setup process, and it’s available on your Windows device. You can now access US Netflix without hassle.
Clear Caches and Cookies
- Success Rate: Medium
- Duration: 2 Minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
When you use a web browser to access Netflix, it saves information about your location in its cache and cookies even when you’re connected to ExpressVPN.
The cache and cookies will help Netflix detect your real location since it’s already saved.
Clearing your browser’s cache and cookies means there’ll be no information saved about the locations you accessed Netflix from. Since Netflix can only detect your server location assigned by ExpressVPN, it helps resolve issues regarding ExpressVPN not working with Netflix.
Follow the below procedure to clear caches and cookies from your browser:
- Press “ctrl + shift + del” on your PC.
- Pick “All time” on the time range button.
- Select boxes for “Cached images and files” and “Cookies and other site data.”
- Tap “Clear data.”
Check for Leaks
- Success Rate: Medium
- Duration: 4 Minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
A leak happens when your ExpressVPN IP address is exposed, and Netflix can easily identify your location and block access.
To check for leaks, follow these steps:
- Go to https://ipleak.net. Your actual IP address and location will display.
- Connect to any server on ExpressVPN. I’ll use the United States server. Then go back to the leak test website.
- If you see your real IP address, then it’s leaked. From my test, the site showed a different IP address assigned by ExpressVPN, meaning my actual IP address isn’t leaked.
Change to the Lightway Protocol
- Success Rate: Medium
- Duration: 1 Minute
- Difficulty: Easy
Try the Lightway – UDP Protocol to bypass Netflix’s geo-blocks. As a result of testing this ExpressVPN protocol, I discovered it reduces latency and provides a smoother streaming experience than OpenVPN and IKEv2.
Follow these steps to change to the Lightway Protocol.
- Disconnect your ExpressVPN, then tap the hamburger menu (≡) on the top left of your app.
- Tap “Options,” then select “Protocols.”
- Pick Lightway – UDP and click “OK.”
- Tap on the connect button and confirm if you’re connected to Lightway – UDP.
Contact ExpressVPN Support Team
- Success Rate: Medium
- Duration: 1.5 Minutes
- Difficulty: Easy
The ExpressVPN support team has a lot of useful information to help you troubleshoot your problem.
You can contact the ExpressVPN Support Team by logging in to your account and clicking “Help & Support” and then “Contact Support.” Describe your problem and include any relevant screenshots. The Support Team will get back to you as soon as possible.
ExpressVPN Not Working With Netflix on Amazon Fire TV?
Amazon Fire TV had the most problems with ExpressVPN and Netflix out of all the devices I tested. I kept seeing the “tvq-pb-101 (1.10.5059)” error message.
I reached out to the ExpressVPN support team, who suggested the US servers Atlanta and Tampa-1, which worked with Netflix on Amazon Fire TV. I also tried Canada and Australia servers, which unblocked Netflix on Fire TV.
Thus, you can fix the problem by connecting to a different server.
Alternatively, you can use an ExpressVPN alternative that offers a US Dedicated IP like NordVPN.
Netflix Not Working With ExpressVPN MediaStreamer?
Netflix might stop working with ExpressVPN MediaStreamer because the IP address you registered on the ExpressVPN website is no longer valid. An outdated MediaStreamer IP address will also affect Netflix’s connection with your Smart TV, Apple TV, or games console.
You can fix this problem by registering a new MediaStreamer IP address through the following steps:
- Log into your ExpressVPN on the website.
- Click “DNS settings.”
- Tap “Register my IP address.”
- Enable the Automatically register my IP address button.
The above steps will fix ExpressVPN MediaStreamer connection issues with Netflix, and you’ll be able to use Netflix on your Smart TV, gaming console, or Apple TV.

Switch to ExpressVPN Alternatives
NordVPN
NordVPN offers users dedicated IP addresses, unlike ExpressVPN.
This means you have an unshared, static server to access Netflix, eliminating the risk of an IP ban due to too many users on one server.
NordVPN also provides 5300+ servers with over 1900 US servers, so, you won’t have any trouble switching to a new server if a shared IP does get banned.
Surfshark
Surfshark, unlike ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and PureVPN, offers unlimited simultaneous connection to allow your young siblings to enjoy the PJ Masks cartoon on Netflix while you watch a romantic movie.
Surfshark is also budget-friendly compared to ExpressVPN, making it a top alternative for Netflix.
PureVPN
PureVPN comes second with the most servers after CyberGhost, with 6500+ and over 1800 in the US, allowing you to access Netflix US without hassle.
Also, it allows ten simultaneous device connections, unlike ExpressVPN, which only offers five.
You can also enjoy a seamless and high-speed HD streaming experience with PureVPN, thanks to its dedicated streaming servers. No more lagging!
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Does Netflix Block ExpressVPN?
Netflix blocks ExpressVPN to avoid misuse of their services. ExpressVPN has more customers than its IP addresses, and since it doesn’t offer dedicated IPs, one IP address can be shared with hundreds of users. Once Netflix detects multiple users on the same IP, it blocks it.
