Blocked on some networks
Jio blocks www.wechat.com, while Airtel lets it through.
The official status
India’s IT ministry blocked WeChat on 29 June 2020, with TikTok and 57 other apps, under Section 69A of the IT Act. The government kept the ban in January 2021.
From late July 2020 WeChat logged out accounts registered with Indian phone numbers, saying that “pursuant to Indian law” it couldn’t offer its service. Users lost their chat history and WeChat Wallet balances.
Indian providers carry out the ban themselves, so it isn’t applied evenly: our test finds Jio blocking wechat.com while the site loads on Airtel. The app is banned either way, and WeChat doesn’t serve Indian phone numbers.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on WeChat in India no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
