Surfshark earned second place on my list of the most reliable VPNs for Steam with the most boring number in my latency table – and in multiplayer, boring is exactly what you want.

My ping sat at 11ms before I connected and 11ms after.

It didn’t creep up the way ExpressVPN’s and PIA’s did, and only NordVPN, which actually lowered mine, did better.

On speed, it gave up 7.14 Mbps of a 217 Mbps line, a touch more than NordVPN and ExpressVPN – a gap you’d struggle to notice even on a big Steam download.

3. PrivateVPN – Regional Steam Servers & Port Forwarding on a Budget

PrivateVPN is the smallest VPN on my list – and the one I’d hand to a Steam player on a tight budget.

Its 200+ servers in 63 countries won’t impress anyone on paper, but the map is spread wide: Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Istanbul, Mumbai, Tokyo, Seoul, Johannesburg, and most of Europe are all on it.

That covers the legit side of regional Steam use:

• Joining friends on regional game servers (a Seoul or Tokyo exit for Asian lobbies, for example).
• Keeping your home store and payment country consistent while you travel, so Steam doesn’t think you’ve moved.

ExpressVPN is more than deserving of its place on this list – it won my speed test outright – yet it sits fourth, and the reason is a Steam-specific one: in a multiplayer lobby, ping settles more fights than bandwidth does.

Once I connected, its ping went up (11ms to 12ms), while NordVPN’s dropped and Surfshark’s didn’t move. It’s just barely higher, so you’re still sure to have a flawless gaming experience when using ExpressVPN with Steam, but it also costs more than Surfshark, PrivateVPN, and PIA, and its speed lead over NordVPN was about 1.5 Mbps of speed loss on a 200+ Mbps line.
