I tested 21+ paid and free VPNs for Taiwan, and NordVPN emerged as the best.

So, this VPN provider has you covered if you want to download torrents without getting any strikes, unblock foreign content from Taiwan or obtain a Taiwanese IP address.

Thankfully, it’s not alone. Other VPNs that impressed me in my tests are ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, and VyprVPN, all for different reasons.

Want to find out which would be your best travel VPN to Taiwan or the best VPN to download if you’re living in the semiconductor capital of the world?

Taiwan has a highly free internet, but that doesn’t mean you’re free to do anything on its internet.

For example, you can’t access large content libraries on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, or related streaming services.

On top of that, Taiwan started cracking down on torrent sites, blocking some, and pushing ISPs to implement a 3-strike rule for users. So, Chunghwa Telecoms, Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan Star, and other ISPs in the region are out for your BitTorrent, Vuze, and uTorrent traffic.

You don’t want to be on the wrong side of laws like this, and neither should you have to suffer losing access to content you love on the web. Thankfully, that’s where the VPNs below come into the mix.

Quick Overview of the Best VPNs for Taiwan

Here’s a brief glance at how my tried and tested VPNs for Taiwan help you get the best out of torrenting, online gaming, web streaming, and content unblocking from Taiwan.

  • NordVPN – Enjoy specialty P2P servers to download torrents securely, unblock content from over 5200+ servers in 59 countries and secure your internet experience from Taiwanese cybercriminals in one fell swoop.
  • ExpressVPN – Get fast, automatic obfuscation to hide your VPN usage, bypass censorship and firewalls, and unblock content from over 3000+ servers in 94 countries.
  • Surfshark – Best solution for many PCs, mobile devices, or users seeking top-notch online privacy, reliable security, and capable content unblocking in 100+ server countries.
  • CyberGhost – How about servers optimized for playing online games without lag, enjoying secure torrenting without ISP strikes, and streaming content in 90+ countries? CyberGhost has you covered.
  • VyprVPN – Turn on the Chameleon protocol to hide your VPN usage, unblock content anywhere over other protocols and encrypt your online conversations/connections with this VPN.

I fell in love with more than one VPN here, so I understand if you’re unsure which one to choose. Fortunately, I can make the choice easier.

Read on to find the details of my tests, comparisons, and reviews of these VPNs.

Reviews, Tests, and Comparisons of the Top VPNs for Taiwan

I know you care about unblocking content in your country, unblocking content anywhere else, streaming content fast, playing online games securely, downloading torrents safely, and ensuring your online privacy in Taiwan.

That’s why I reviewed and tested these VPNs based on those criteria.

Here’s how they performed.

NordVPN – Best VPN to Download Torrents and Unblock Content in Taiwan

nordvpn for taiwan
NordVPN unblocks access to Next TV over Taiwan servers

NordVPN hauls 100+ Taiwanese servers in Taipei to

  • Unblock Taiwanese streaming platforms like TTV, ETTV News, and CTi Entertainment unavailable outside Taiwan.
  • Access specific content libraries like Netflix Taiwan from anywhere.
  • Connect to Taiwanese gaming peers to play games online.
  • Encrypt your internet connection in Taiwan, especially when connected to public Wi-Fi networks at places like Qburger, 7-ELEVEn, Texas Roadhouse, or anywhere else in Taiwan.

I like that NordVPN has the largest server library in Taiwan, ensuring you don’t suffer overcrowding if other users are connected to the server simultaneously.

Likewise, I checked to confirm that the servers are DDoS-protected. Considering the sheer number of gamers in Taiwan, ensuring you never suffer attacks from disgruntled gamers when enjoying your COD, Apex Legends, PUBG, or other online games is important.

nordvpn servers are ddos protected

Plus, connecting to the Taiwanese servers to play games in Taiwan means lower ping and faster speed.

But NordVPN isn’t only good for its Taiwanese servers.

The VPN provider has 5200+ servers in 59 countries to unblock content you can’t get in Taiwan, which is a lot.

For example, you can get

  • Other Netflix libraries like Netflix Japan, Netflix US, and Netflix Australia by connecting to the relevant servers on NordVPN.
  • Services unavailable in Taiwan like Hulu (over US servers), BBC iPlayer (over UK servers), and NRK TV (over Norway servers).
  • Torrent websites and services blocked in Taiwan.

Besides unblocking torrent services, NordVPN is also great at hiding your torrent activities.

nordvpn for your torrent activities

So, your government and ISPs can’t even see that you’re accessing torrent websites, find out you’re using a torrent client, or see what files you’ve downloaded. And they can’t report what they don’t see to copyright trolls, ensuring your online privacy.

I got the best NordVPN torrenting experience over its P2P servers, which are extra optimized for secure torrent downloads. It even has a P2P server in Taiwan to get the best ping, lowest latency, and fastest speed without exposing what you’re doing to Chunghwa Telecom, Asia Pacific Telecom, or your preferred ISP.

nordvpn p2p servers in taiwan

Now, you can use any regular servers, but you won’t get as much speed as NordVPN manages on these P2P servers. The best part is that they’re compatible with uTorrent, BitTorrent, qBitTorrent, Vuze, and other torrent clients.

If you’re a torrent download buff, CyberGhost is the only other listed VPN with specialty P2P/torrenting servers.

Redditors in Taiwan use NordVPN to stream Netflix and BBC iPlayer from anywhere

Even so, I wasn’t just going to take NordVPN’s word or the barrage of good things I see on social media for the speed promise. Testing this VPN on my 100Mbps network returned 33Mbps. That’s a decent speed for fast download and 4K content streaming, which I got over the VPN, but not the best on the list.

nordvpn speed test on 100mbps network

Not even enabling the in-house NordLynx protocol, promised for better speeds and security, helped much. In fact, I got way better scores with CyberGhost and PureVPN. Likewise, ExpressVPN had similar speed scores, even though it enabled obfuscation (the VPN speed killer).

So, you might have to look elsewhere if speed is your primary concern.

If you’re willing to look past that, NordVPN doesn’t falter on reliable encryption. That way, your private discussions, online web activity, and privacy remain protected behind walls that the Taiwanese government or ISPs can’t hack. Not even if they had next-gen quantum computers to help them out.

nordvpn reliable encryption
NordVPN's encryption ensures zero leaks

On top of that, NordVPN has an audited no-logs policy

Since it’s based in Panama, you can rest assured that it won’t even hand over any data to Taiwan since it’s not within the government’s jurisdiction.

Sounds interesting? Wait till you hear that you can connect six units simultaneously on one NordVPN subscription. Throw in its easy-to-use PC and mobile apps, and you have a reliable security tool wherever you go.

However, NordVPN isn’t the cheapest provider here. It’s not the costliest either, edging out ExpressVPN and VyprVPN.

And you can save more with these NordVPN deals that promise a 30-day window to test the VPN risk-free.

Pros

Cons

ExpressVPN – Best Taiwan VPN for Fast Obfuscation, Torrent Seeding, and Content Unblocking

expressvpn for taiwan

ExpressVPN does many things correctly in Taiwan, and if not for the slightly elevated pricing, it would have been my first choice.

For starters, it lags behind NordVPN with its Taiwanese servers

It doesn’t state how many servers it has in the region, but you can get multiple IP addresses from a single server. That one isn’t just there for decoration either, unblocking access to TTV, FTV, and Next TV like it’s nothing.

I quickly moved on to international content unblocking, getting access to Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and CNN Go News without these services knowing I was in Taiwan.

For these, I had the privilege of 3000+ ExpressVPN servers

That’s less than NordVPN manages and only better than VyprVPN’s haul. However, ExpressVPN spreads its servers to 94 countries, ensuring you can get IP addresses and unblock content in more regions.

expressvpn taiwan users on reddit
ExpressVPN gets a lot of love on Reddit among Taiwan users too

Some of this reliable unblocking comes down to the same level of encryption used by NordVPN and other listed VPNs. Thus, these services I unblocked truly thought I was in the region where they were accessible.

But ExpressVPN has another ace up its sleeves: automatic, fast obfuscation.

The obfuscation feature ensures Taiwanese authorities, public network admins, content firewall operators, and the websites/streaming platforms I unblock never know I’m using a VPN. Thus, they don’t think of paying special attention to my traffic or blocking my access on the network.

Even if there were firewall blocks against VPNs, ExpressVPN’s obfuscation would bypass them.

That said, the other VPNs I listed (except CyberGhost) also offer obfuscation. The difference is, only ExpressVPN and VyprVPN still maintain stellar speeds over obfuscation. With the rest, your internet crawls to almost a halt.

I put some numbers on this by testing ExpressVPN’s obfuscation speeds on the same 100Mbps network, and I got 32Mbps back! That’s almost level with NordVPN, and it didn’t have obfuscation enabled when I tested it.

expressvpn speed test on 100mbps network

Thus, I’m comfortable saying it’s a faster VPN than NordVPN on a better security model. Connect to the Lightway – UDP protocol to get similar speeds and security.

Given that level of security, it’s not surprising that ExpressVPN is a fantastic torrenting VPN.

I was first put off by its lack of specialty P2P servers like NordVPN.

But a customer support staff told me all its servers are P2P-optimized and enabled. So, the provider’s 3000+ server haul might be better engineered than NordVPN’s 5200+.

The best part is that ExpressVPN supports secure torrent seeding, something that’s missing on NordVPN, CyberGhost, and Surfshark.

Thus, you can satisfy your conscience for being a leecher by seeding or uploading torrent files when you can.

However, the port forwarding support that’s responsible for torrent seeding is restricted to the robust router app. That won’t be a massive drawback if you have a compatible router.

My major dealbreakers with ExpressVPN are that it supports only five simultaneous connections and is the most expensive VPN provider I have reviewed. Considering everything it provides – torrent seeding, fast obfuscation, more countries, and P2P optimization on all servers – I believe you’re getting good value.

Luckily, you can get even better value with these ExpressVPN discounts if you grab them before they expire.

Pros

Cons

Surfshark – Best Affordable Taiwanese VPN for Unlimited Devices

surfshark for taiwan

Surfshark isn’t one of those affordable VPN providers that cut a lot of corners and shave off several features to keep the price low. In fact, it beats the other two before it in different areas.

To start with, it offers 3200+ servers in 100+ countries, one of which is Taiwan. That’s

  • More servers and countries than ExpressVPN; and
  • Almost 2x the country reach on NordVPN

Its servers are not just there to make up the count, either, unblocking everything I throw at them.

I started with the Taiwan servers, watching NYC TV Week, Fight the Power teaser, and BBC America’s Brand Refresh With ‘Top Gear’ on Next TV.

Truth be told, I had no idea I could find a Taiwanese streaming service in English, so I loved every minute I spent on this platform.

surfshark taiwan users on reddit
Redditors in Taiwan have good things to say about Surfshark too

Another reason I enjoyed streaming this service that much is Surfshark’s speeds, ensuring a lag-free experience. However, I discovered a recurrent issue on the Windows PC app that you should know about.

Surfshark doesn’t have an in-house protocol for speed and security like ExpressVPN (Lightway) and NordVPN (NordLynx). So, it defers to the industry-standard WireGuard protocol. The issue is that it seldom wants to connect via WireGuard on my Windows PC, even though it’s smooth sailing on my iOS and Android devices.

Thus, you might have to keep at it for a while before it agrees to connect you via WireGuard. That’s why I didn’t get to test its speeds on the same 100Mbps connection I had at my Taiwan host’s place.

surfshark speed test on 100mbps network

However, I later tested it on a 45Mbps connection and got 39Mbps, representing the least speed drop. Thus, this provider has the potential to be fast, but its WireGuard protocol may be non-dependable on PCs.

If you can look past that, its content-unblocking abilities also extend to the other servers. So, don’t worry about lags while you stream your favorite movies, shows, and documentaries on Netflix US, Hulu, Peacock TV, Amazon Prime Video, or other preferred streaming services.

These streaming speeds carry over into torrent downloads on Surfshark too. The only downside is that it doesn’t have a specialty P2P server section.

surfshark on torrent seeding

You’ll either have to test every server individually or speak with a customer care agent to know which the best P2P servers are. I did the latter and got a quick response via its 24/7 live chat, but I’d have preferred to see the P2P servers on the app rather than asking.

It doesn’t support torrent seeding, putting it in the same league as NordVPN and CyberGhost.

Surfshark remedies that with its offer of unlimited simultaneous connections plus unlimited bandwidth on PCs and mobile devices.

So, your large travel group, family, gaming guild, or other group users can chip in for a single Surfshark subscription for all their devices.

And it’s the cheapest VPN provider I listed here, so you don’t have to break the bank to get it, either.

Ensure to use these Surfshark offers to get those mouth-watering prices and enjoy a 30-day money-back guarantee on top.

CyberGhost – Best Specialized VPN for Torrenting, Streaming, and Gaming in Taiwan

cyberghost for taiwan

CyberGhost is designed for first-time VPN users who want to quickly get the best gaming, torrenting, and streaming servers without having to test the massive server library themselves.

Speaking of massive, CyberGhost boasts 9000+ servers in 90+ countries to get local IPs, unblock content and encrypt your internet connection.

This is the largest server count here, only falling behind Surfshark and ExpressVPN on the country count.

But you can rest assured that you won’t suffer server overcrowding in your preferred regions. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to get clean, clear, and crisp streams of Next TV, FTV, and TVBS News on the Taiwan servers.

connecting to taiwan servers
Get CyberGhost and torrent securely

I retained access to these services and Netflix Taiwan long after leaving Taipei by connecting to the Taiwan servers. Since there are 81 of these Taiwanese servers, there’s wiggle room to accommodate other users connecting to the same location without performance issues.

You can also choose any other country on CyberGhost to stream content there. Some of the geo-restricted content you can unblock from Taiwan or anywhere else on CyberGhost include:

  • Sky Go UK via UK servers
  • Netflix US, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+ via US servers
  • RTVE ES, HBO Max ES, and Netflix ES via Spanish servers
  • CBC and DAZN on Canadian servers

The best part is that you get streaming-optimized servers designed for the best performance with these streaming services in those regions.

However, I was disappointed to not find any streaming-optimized server in Taiwan.

cyberghost for streaming

But that didn’t mean anything since you can connect to the regular servers for a reliable streaming experience. In fact, you can connect to a server optimized for one service (e.g., Netflix) to stream another service (e.g., CBC) in the same region.

To be sure CyberGhost doesn’t limit the best speeds to these streaming servers, I tested a regular server and got 38Mbps on the 100Mbps connection.

This is faster than NordVPN and ExpressVPN’s speeds, closing in on Surfshark, the fastest so far.

cyberghost speed test on 100mbps network

Always connect to its WireGuard protocol to get similar and the best speeds since it lacks an in-house protocol. Alternatively, use IKEv2 on mobile for even faster speeds and stable connections.

Moving on, I didn’t doubt CyberGhost’s ability to deliver HD quality and 4K content. Thankfully, these speeds carry over into torrenting and gaming if you need such services in Taiwan.

I checked its torrent-optimized servers and found one in Taiwan.

That’s the best way to unblock torrent sites and download your preferred files fast without ISP/government interference.

Alternatively, you can connect to P2P servers elsewhere if your chosen torrent sites remain blocked over the Taiwan servers.

cyberghost p2p servers

The only difference to NordVPN here is the lack of the torrenting server section on mobile. After all, I like connecting to NordVPN’s P2P servers to unblock and play games like League of Legends, Mobile Legends, or Apex Legends.

Speaking of games, CyberGhost also provides gaming servers in multiple server locations. Sadly, it doesn’t show these special servers on mobile.

The only saving grace is that you can connect to any of its standard servers to play games and download torrents. But I doubt you’ll get the same experience.

This is a good place to mention that CyberGhost offers seven simultaneous device connections, putting it ahead of NordVPN and ExpressVPN.

It’s also cheaper than these two, as well as VyprVPN.

Get these CyberGhost offers to enjoy discounts on your purchase and a 45-day money-back guarantee.

VyprVPN – Fastest VPN for Content Streaming and Torrent Downloads in Taiwan

vyprvpn for taiwan

VyprVPN provides incredible speeds for streaming, gaming without latency, unblocking high-quality videos, and downloading torrents the fastest in Taiwan. So, why did it feature as the last VPN?

First, it’s ahead of 15+ other VPNs I discarded after testing the entire bunch for this list. So, it’s definitely no slouch. That said, you’ll find out why it closes out the list now.

VyprVPN has only 700+ servers in 70+ locations and 60+ countries

So, while it slightly edges NordVPN out on the country count, it has the least servers on the list. In comparison, NordVPN has 2000+ servers in the USA alone!

However, VyprVPN shows quality over quantity, making it worth a shot.

vyprvpn reddit users
Get VyprVPN and access Taiwanese content from anywhere

For example, its Taiwan servers offer multiple IP addresses to access your Chang Hwa Bank, Sunny Bank, and other Taiwanese banking services abroad without setting off red flags. These servers also unblocked HiChannel, FOX Sports Taiwan, and FMTV’s live content without buffering or lag.

This brings me to the VyprVPN speed test, which sealed its place here.

VPNs are supposed to cause a connection drop due to the extra encryption they carry. With VyprVPN, I got zero connection drops, scoring 100Mbps on my 100Mbps connection. That’s 2.5x faster than the second-fastest VPN (Surfshark) I tested.

vyprvpn speed test on 100mbps network

You’d imagine how happy and eager I was to test these speeds on Netflix US, Hulu, FOX Sports US, and other streaming networks I could get my hands on. Not once did this VPN lag, stutter, or buffer my content streams.

Most other fast VPNs I’ve tested rely on an in-house protocol to supply fantastic speeds, but not VyprVPN. Connect to its WireGuard protocol layered with AES 256-bit encryption, and you’re on your way to blazing-fast speeds.

Even so, VyprVPN has an in-house protocol. Dubbed “Chameleon,” this protocol offers obfuscation services to

  • Throw your ISP off your VPN scent
  • Prevent other gamers, the government, websites, and online platforms you interact with from knowing you’re using a VPN
  • Bypass tough network firewalls, VPN blocks, and censorship of content (especially on school and work networks)

The best part is that Chameleon is fast, mirroring ExpressVPN’s fast obfuscation promise.

I wasn’t expecting VyprVPN to create specialty server sections with such a small selection. So, there’s no specialized P2P server for torrents, no optimized servers for streaming, or some curated gaming servers.

But don’t let that discourage you since ALL VyprVPN servers are designed to handle these tasks equally.

In fact, it supports port forwarding (like ExpressVPN) for torrent seeding and uploading. On top of that, its port forwarding is available on all devices, rather than just the router support that ExpressVPN brings.

However, I feel VyprVPN is expensive, especially since it doesn’t haul a lot of servers like the others. Given its focus on quality over quantity, port forwarding, fast obfuscation in-house protocol, and lightning-fast speeds, though, it’s also worth the price.

Besides, it offers thirty (30) simultaneous device connections, second only to Surfshark on the list. That should be more than enough for a large household, a single user with multiple devices, students, a traveling party, or other users.

Can You Get a Free VPN With Taiwan IP?

Free VPN providers often don’t offer Taiwanese IPs, opting for servers in more mainstream locations like the US and UK. Even so, it’s best to avoid free VPNs in Taiwan since they’re unreliable with privacy, security, content unblocking, and data encryption.

cheap vpn for taiwan
Some drawbacks of free VPNs

Instead, choose reliable yet affordable VPNs like NordVPN with Taiwanese IPs, 5200+ other servers in 59 countries, and reliable online privacy to match.

Are VPNs Legal in Taiwan?

VPNs are legal in Taiwan as the government doesn’t frown on citizens bypassing geo-blocks with these tools. Since Taiwan doesn’t employ internet censorship, the state has no reason to prosecute VPN users if they continue to use these services legally.

Thus, ensure to never commit cybercrimes over your VPN, so you don’t land in legal hot waters with the VPN provider and Taiwanese government.
