Blocked
www.snapchat.com fails to open on China Unicom and China Mobile, twice, while it opens from other countries.
The official status
Snapchat is among the foreign social apps China’s internet censors block. Freedom House’s 2024 report lists it with the international platforms blocked in China, and independent tests from inside China still found snapchat.com blocked in September 2026.
When the block began isn’t clear. Snap said in 2017 that it didn’t know whether it could ever enter the Chinese market on terms the government would accept.
Hong Kong is outside the mainland’s censorship system, so the block doesn’t apply there.
WeChat and other Chinese apps, which grew as foreign platforms were blocked.
Get past a block
A VPN connects you through a server in another country, so a block on Snapchat in China no longer applies. Where VPNs themselves are blocked, you need one that can disguise its traffic, and you should set it up before you travel.
Only government-approved VPNs are legal in China, and most foreign VPNs are blocked.
