The official status

Reddit in China

Reddit’s website and app stopped loading in mainland China around 11 August 2018. No official reason was given. Earlier reports of a block, such as one in 2015, were disputed or turned out to be temporary.

The block has stayed: Freedom House’s 2024 report lists Reddit among the sites blocked in China, and independent tests from inside China still found it blocked in September 2026.

What people use instead

Baidu Tieba, the closest Chinese equivalent, and Zhihu, which works more like Quora.

How we test

  • Every day, test machines on China Unicom and China Mobile home connections open www.reddit.com.
  • A failure counts only when it happens twice on the same network, while the site opens from other countries.
  • A change is published only after re-checks a few hours later and again the next day, on several machines per provider, confirm it. It’s dated from the first sighting.
  • Test machines caught getting around blocks, through a VPN or a filter-dodging tool, are set aside.
  • We test the website over home broadband. The app, calls and mobile networks can behave differently.
