The official status
A 2024 law required TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell its US operations or face a ban. The Supreme Court upheld it on 17 January 2025, and TikTok went dark in the US late on 18 January, coming back the next day after President-elect Trump promised to delay enforcement.
Executive orders paused enforcement through 2025, and TikTok returned to the Apple and Google app stores in February 2025. In September 2025 an order approved a sale to a new US joint venture as a “qualified divestiture”, which exempts the app from the law.
The deal closed on 22 January 2026. The TikTok USDS Joint Venture now runs the US app; Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX hold 15% each, and ByteDance keeps 19.9%.
Get past a block
TikTok works in the US today. A VPN is still worth having: it encrypts your connection on hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi and keeps what you do online private from the network you’re on.

Questions
Yes. TikTok isn’t banned in the US. Since 22 January 2026 the US app has been run by a new majority-American joint venture, approved under the 2024 law, and it’s in the Apple and Google app stores.
No. American users kept the same app after the joint-venture deal closed in January 2026.
No ban is scheduled. The September 2025 order approved the joint-venture sale as a qualified divestiture, which exempts the app from the 2024 law. A lawsuit filed in March 2026 argues the deal breaks that law, but it asks for the deal to be renegotiated, not for a ban.
